scrps··on Ask HN: Should I try to manufacture toasters?
In my experience and not that I have tried every model but enough to say I am guessing they all suck as badly as the ones I have had.

Space to improve exist, heating elements need fresh designs and more consistant heat distribution, should also be simple, I dont want options I want toast quick and easy.

scrps··on Effortless OpenBSD Audio and Desktop Screen Recording Guide
It is nostalgic to see it is still painful.

scrps··on Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years (1998)
It is possible you are not cut out for sarcasm?

(Giving you the benefit of the doubt you may have taken the comment literally, if so I'd maybe apologize for insulting someone with 41 years of experience in a field that is still young whilst having no knowledge of exactly who you are talking to)

scrps··on ‘This Has Been Going on for Years’: Boeing’s Manufacturing Mess
This is what happens when the people who build the world we all live in are contravened by people who think they run the world we all live in.
scrps··on The Flappie AI cat door stops your pet from gifting you dead mice
Lots of views, fresh air if possible, warm spots for the cat to sleep and more than one, some place with either wildlife and/or human activity, and of course scratching pads/tower.

Granted, I do all of this and my cat (a gift from the pandemic someone dumped on the side of a mountain for me to find, despite not wanting to be a pet owner, thanks humans!) still manages to find a way to sleep on equipment I don't want to have to replace...

scrps··on LG washing machine sending 3.7GB of data a day
When cryptocurrency tumbling gets literal...

Edit to add: I also just realized I have an LG that does have wifi that I've never used, which may now get used for entirely different reasons...

I buy asus having a math bug or something, it is also possible those are constant retries on something failing. I put a pihole on my parents home network and in a month their roku had some stupid amount of blocked attempts, in the tens of thousands.

scrps··on The teen mental illness epidemic is international (2023)
You do realize there is nothing wrong with theorizing about conspiracies, kind of like theorizing about physics.

You are mixing up propgandists who run with theories as though they are proven fact on bad faith to push agendas without a shred of evidence.

Law enforcement engages in theorizing about conspiracies, intelligence agencies engage in theorizing about conspiracies, almost every country has laws making criminal conspiracy illegal. And there are plenty of conspiracies that turn out to be true, they also tend to be quite banal and human rather than sexy hollywood aliens, global gov conspiracies, etc.

Attacking theorizing with such a broad stroke is attacking critical thinking not disinformation. You can't decide what path of possible truth to persue without theorizing.

If anything santa and the easter bunny are gentle introductions for kids to learn how to tune their BS detection circuit.

scrps··on Ask HN: Good book to learn modern networking?
It doesn't qualify as a book but reading RFCs has always been my go to if I want to understand a protocol albeit RFCs can be a bit... Dry.

I'd also imagine the time complexities of string rewriting systems are significantly more efficient than passing it off to an llm.

Why not burn a couple hundred watts to do find and replace (/s)?

scrps··on China planning 1,600-core chips that use an entire wafer
Forgive my ignorance, I know basically nothing but it seems like they are going out, what about going up?

I did a very short search and found an entry on 3D ICs, one of the challenges was heat and I would assume latency but other than those (sizable seemingly) hurdles would 3D IC be a competitor to whole wafers?

scrps··on Fired comedian ordered to get day job back after jokes ruled 'simply funny'
My personal policy at work is a super strict seperation, I simply share as little as possible, standard small talk but I keep it extremely generic. Say too little people get curious, say too much people draw conclusions or feel the emergence of a relationship. Be just uninteresting enough to be overlooked in social contexts.

Not sure it would have helped in his case as both his job and hobby are public. But it has kept drama at bay in my case and has served me well but ymmv.

scrps··on The Parisian Cafe for Subversives and Whistleblowers
Wouldn't it behoove a subversive to be, well, subversive? Meeting in one spot, known to be a place where subversives meet sounds like a coup for any org wanting to keep track of associations even before an article in vice let everyone know.
scrps··on Hard disk LEDs and noisy machines
A comment left on the post mentions in days of old you could detect viruses via drive sounds...

I have a 2u server sitting in a closet running a lot of things, it sits over a pool of spinning rust, one day I happened to be in the closet and hear the disks getting hammered, no alerts about any network hijinks, no login alerts or high volume traffic coming or going so I log in and it turned out to be a friend I had given a shell to because he wanted to learn linux and he was messing around with dd... His account now has an alert on login so I don't have a stroke.

Not exactly fun but did bring back memories.

scrps··on Drones are the new drug mules
you can jam a drone, but you can't jam a 155mm shell.

This is both a fantastic line and wisdom.

scrps··on Researchers 3D print components for a portable mass spectrometer
For 3D printing nerds:

Vat photopolymerization was carried out using a Bison 1000 DLP printer (Tethon 3D, Omaha, NE, USA) with a light engine composed of a 1920 × 1080 array of 405 nm UV LED pixels of 57 µm in size. The dielectric structures were printed in 100 µm slices. The vat of the Bison 1000 heats up the resin to improve the adhesion of the printed part to the platform and to reduce the viscosity of the resin during printing. The printer is installed inside a custom, filtered HEPA cabinet to keep a clean and regulated working environment.

The dielectric parts were made with Universal Vitrolite (Tethon 3D, Omaha, NE, USA)—a photocurable glass-ceramic resin heavily doped with silica microparticles.

A paragraph down:

Following the printing process (Figure 8a), the fabricated parts are selectively masked using Procoat maskant lacquer (Maskcoat, West Monroe, LA, USA) to achieve galvanic isolation between the electrode surfaces

scrps··on Do we think of Git commits as diffs, snapshots, or histories?
Intuitively I've always view them as diffs with a history rather than sort of a recursive diff. I also started on RCS so that could have something to do with my way of looking at it.

It is an exceptionally misleading headline. ARPA-H seems to mostly be justifying their budget with the cancer moonshot initiative, they also fund a bunch of different health projects.

scrps··on Copilot key will eventually be required in new PC keyboards
Sorry, I assumed the implied word 'more' was obvious to everyone who has used a computer keyboard in the last 30 years.
scrps··on Drones are the new drug mules
That and larger drone comms for russia I would guess are satellite based which is harder to jam and sadly out of budget for the Ukrainians.

That being said I wonder if you could control small drones over satellite or if that is a $900 solution to a 99 cent problem.

scrps··on Copilot key will eventually be required in new PC keyboards
I would imagine it is just another key completing a circuit, no additional magic so it should be as remappable as any other key.
scrps··on Copilot key will eventually be required in new PC keyboards
Because everyone loves brand marketing on their keyboards...

Microsoft would incur far less wrath if they would stop letting their marketing department run their company.
