scrapcode··on Nearly half Dell's US workforce has rejected RTO. Rather WFH than get promoted (2024)
Good. If I have to go back into the office it may as well be with a fat pay raise and a new mission, the likes of which are more likely with a new company.
scrapcode··on Bench Accounting Acquired by Employer.com

scrapcode··on Chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen rejoins tournament he quit over wearing jeans
Top comment in a similar recent thread [0] sums it up nicely:

> The context in which this happened matters a lot.

> There have been tensions between the FIDE organization and top players like Carlsen since the latter have been promoting an alternative chess organization around Freestyle chess (aka Chesss960), which has slightly different rules.

> I.e. this is less about "dress code enforcement" and it is more about "Carlsen is fed up with the FIDE organization in general".

scrapcode··on Talking over a wall changed my direction as a programmer
> "Today I make generative art..."

Is generative art just AI, or is there something else out there that was called that before the emergence of AI? Genuinely curious.

scrapcode··on Ergo Chat – A modern IRC server written in Go
Although I understand your point, and certainly have some friends that would feel like they're hacking the gibson connecting to an irc server, is Discord et. al really that much different?
scrapcode··on NASA: Mystery of Life's Handedness Deepens
I certainly am trending that way as I grow older. As I've recently started to re-dive into Christian theology, the fine-tuning argument seems more and more interesting, and it's pretty difficult to find "good" secular arguments against it.

scrapcode··on Netflix buffering issues: Boxing fans complain about Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson
They have absolutely shit the bed here, and of course their socials are completely ignoring it.
scrapcode··on Shopify Is Winning Salesforce Clients, Stoking E-Commerce Rivalry
I honestly still don't even understand what Salesforce is.

I have never worked in eCommerce, yet still keep running into areas of the orgs I've worked for that use it's plugin ecosystem to try and accomplish... things- things which usually have nothing to do with sales.

scrapcode··on Shopify Is Winning Salesforce Clients, Stoking E-Commerce Rivalry
My experience with Salesforce outside of sales orgs are it is used as an overly complex, bug-ridden phpMyAdmin
scrapcode··on For the strongest disc golf throws, it's all in the thumbs
If a lifetime of ball golf has taught me anything, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to athletic movements such as this. Even if there was, it would take one many years to find it articulated in a way that made sense to them. I've had certain "breakthroughs" and have been able to look back at professional lessons and see where they may have been trying to get that breakthrough advice across, and it just didn't make sense to me at the time, and thought "why didn't they just explain it like 'this'...?"
scrapcode··on Redbox left PII on decommissioned machines
Yeah, that's called a fucking integration test.
scrapcode··on FreeWP Is Here to Shake Up the WordPress Ecosystem
Since we're here - what are people using these days to prop a quick web property up for a friend, for example, that's not such a PITA?

I recently told a friend I'd throw up a site for him for his dog grooming business, and naturally went to WP. I figured I'd just a simple free theme that was close and modify it to my liking if possible and it was anything but trivial. Free basic themes take a lot of digging to find, they're built on two(?) Wordpress theme-builders, or maybe some other proprietary theme, often include other weird addons, etc... I don't remember it being so convoluted- but I guess I am getting old in this space.

Certainly not siding with Big G here, but the onus is on the school. They should be able to be held accountable.
scrapcode··on Radio Shack Catalog Archive (1939-2011)
Right on time for me - as I'm looking to identify a certain plug (it appears to be a micro JST)

Is there anything currently similar to McMaster-Carr[0] for electronics? They seem to do the best in terms of a technical parts catalog.

scrapcode··on Role of Deliberate Practice in the Development of Creativity (2014)
Similar situation. The book does delineate between certain activities and how they're reinforced/guided- so I'm not sure your example is a counter-example. It actually fits the narrative of the book quite well. For example, it uses Futsol as an example of a sport that is self-reinforcing: you do the right things, you keep the ball and get a goal- if not, it gets taken from you. In contrast, a student playing the piano is much more successful with an experienced teacher to guide the rights and wrongs.
scrapcode··on Role of Deliberate Practice in the Development of Creativity (2014)
Going deeper it can mean anything from having a person you want to impress, a parent that you just can't ever seem to make proud, or seeing someone succeed their way out of your impoverished upbringing.
scrapcode··on Role of Deliberate Practice in the Development of Creativity (2014)
Having someone around you who either intentionally or unintentionally creates an environment that makes you want to, and therefor enjoy putting in the effort, is crucial.

I am just finishing up The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle [0] and it has been an interesting short read. In a nutshell, it boils talent down deep practice, ignition, and master coaching.

scrapcode··on Timeshare owner? The Mexican drug cartels want you
After doing basic napkin math I've always thought it was pretty obvious. Buy-in + annual maintenance fees that are pretty close to what a condo rental outside of a contract would be. Then you add in the other factors such that you're locked into certain locations and whatever timeframe is not booked, don't actually own anything other than a lease, and the only way to get out of it is to sell it yourself... no thank you.

scrapcode··on Is "Rich Dad Poor Dad" a Fraud?
Index funds seem to be the consensus in books like that, which would include tech stocks I'd imagine.
scrapcode··on Is "Rich Dad Poor Dad" a Fraud?
They all say the same stuff essentially: avoid fast money hype & invest in slow, steady, low-risk vehicles.
scrapcode··on Workers are stuck in place because everyone is too afraid of a recession to quit
Exactly where I'm at. It took a recent offer for ~30% more and all of the same benefits after a multi-stage interview to really slap me in the face with an appreciation of all of the other things aside from salary that I am happy about where I am at. It has taken me about a decade and plenty of other positions to realize how important those aspects are to me.

I once had a shift work job with a lot of overtime. The money was great, but I had an opportunity for a M-F nine-to-five for $20k less per year. I was at a crossroad and asked myself at the time "If someone right now told me I could be at home with my family every night and every weekend for the rest of my career but it cost me $20k/yr, would I pay it?" That helped me make that decision much easier, and now I reversed that same idea. Essentially, I sat down and thought "if I were to lose [great management|no work over 40hrs|remote without geographic restriction|great colleagues and no drama] would I be willing to pay $n to have it back?" It's too easy to forget what our goals were prior to achievement.

scrapcode··on AMD records its highest server market share in decades
Why wouldn't it be a viable reason? Every customer that AWS and Google have has the potential to make that decision and I believe it gets more appetizing with every data breach / funnel failure / etc.
scrapcode··on AMD records its highest server market share in decades
Is there any indication at all that this is due to businesses bringing their hardware back on-prem? Do you think "history repeats itself" will hold true in the on-prem v. cloud realm?
scrapcode··on The real "Wolf of Wall Street" sales script
Well, how did it work out?
scrapcode··on The real "Wolf of Wall Street" sales script
Same here. It's simple math for me, really - even if your pitch is compelling and well-targeted to me somehow, it is highly unlikely that your offer and commission overhead are going to be better than something I can seek out myself.
scrapcode··on The real "Wolf of Wall Street" sales script
Turns out I've never in my life had a successful cold caller reach out to me, I guess. I can't think of a single reason in 2024 that a random telephone call would get me to part ways with my money. In fact, I've had very few instances where a salesperson adds value to a transaction period.
scrapcode··on The real "Wolf of Wall Street" sales script
I have personally never bought / donated anything from / to a cold-caller or a door-to-door salesman. At most it might pique my interest into doing my own research into the field/product and seek out the market leader on my own.
