scottshea··on Railway Paradise: How a Fine-Dining Empire Made the Southwest Palatable
The La Posada hotel in Winslow,AZ is gorgeous and is slowly being restored to its former glory. A great place to stay if you want to check out Meteor Crater and the Petrified Forest
scottshea··on Challenger Engineer Who Warned of Shuttle Disaster Dies
I try to keep Bob Elbing in mind when I ask if I should say something or not. Thankfully none of my work has ever had a single life, much less 7, depending on what I do. Still, I try to do the right thing and speak up.
scottshea··on Where Have You Gone, Peter Norton? (2014)
Often lost in the Peter Norton mystique was the efforts of Brad Kingsbury who wrote many of the utilities as Peter's first programmer.
scottshea··on Where Have You Gone, Peter Norton? (2014)
Agreed. At the time I was with Symantec it was bandied about that the cost of having him on the box was becoming a pain point. They had been trying to phase his image out for years.
scottshea··on Hacker Publishes Personal Info of 20,000 FBI Agents
Props for owning up
scottshea··on DOJ defers payments to local police agencies through asset forfeiture program
To be fair when I posted it autocorrect changed it to "defends" and I had to change it back
scottshea··on Stark images of Shackleton's struggle
I love that someone stowed away on the ship. Worst luck of 1915.
scottshea··on Orwell Estate Sends Copyright Takedown Over the Number “1984”
I wonder if Van Halen gets these letters
scottshea··on 14-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Bringing Homemade Clock to School
Hey they were recently acknowledged for their use of cutting edge technology!

scottshea··on 'Oldest' Koran fragments found in Birmingham University
Not really an insightful comment but I first read that as Brigham Young University which makes it all that more impactful... and funny
scottshea··on Ask HN: Does anyone else value the comments more than the link?
The comments, for me, definitely add to the discussion but it is still the headline/link that catch my attention to read in the first place. My normal rule on the net, especially for things I write, is 'do not read the comments' except for HN... and Deadspin when the article is about a sport not widely played in the US. I learn a lot about the sport that way.
scottshea··on Fear of Failure and Lack of Speed in a Large Corporation
I was hired in a large corporation to 'bring an entrepreneurial spirit' to the organization. After a year and a half of being pounded on for trying innovative things and attempting to move fast I left. On my way out one of the people on the hiring team said "I think I know why we do not have any entrepreneurial spirit; you get punished for it"
scottshea··on Intelligence Officer’s Bookshelf
Devotion to the internet is a bad thing?
scottshea··on We are being sued for refusing to take down a website
What?! Canada does not have to follow US laws? I am sure there are some whackdoodle-nutjobs in the US government working on changing this somehow.
scottshea··on LAPD adds drones to arsenal, says they'll be used sparingly
And the LAPD has NEVER shown itself to be in contempt of the laws that govern them. I mean it is a paragon of virtuous conduct that can be trusted with advanced technology like this.
scottshea··on 3rd Circuit vacates Weev's conviction [pdf]
I am glad this happened for a number of reasons. But the crowning moment for me came when reading his Alias list:

ANDREW AUERNHEIMER, a/k/a Weev a/k/a Weelos a/k/a Escher

scottshea··on Rails Data Injection Vulnerability in Active Record (CVE-2014-0080)
I hate myself. My first thought was being happy my version of Rails was not vulnerable to this one.
scottshea··on Lions Released to Deal with Hamptons Deer Problems
Oh this is going to end so well
scottshea··on Poorly chosen Ruby gem names
Always a little suspicious of 'crack' and 'chronic'. I understand the clean use of the name but the vernacular use of each...
scottshea··on New Top-Level Domains
I am sure someone proposed the .meow or .cat domains. I just wonder how far they got
scottshea··on I will not do a tech interview
A good github repo does go a long way. I have one project I did as an interview 'test' that I leave up there simply because it shows my thought process etc. It was not a proprietary thing so no sensitive information is in it.
scottshea··on U.S. sues Bank of America over sale of $850M in mortgage-backed securities
This is tied to their own Mortgage operations rather than those they bought with Countrywide (disclaimer: I worked at Countrywide for six years).

As the article notes though:

"The bank’s acquisition of mortgage giant Countrywide Financial in 2009 gave it an edge in the housing market and endless legal headaches. Analysts estimate that Bank of America has lost nearly $40 billion on mortgage litigation and repurchases of soured loans linked to Countrywide."

So an $850 million deal resulting in litigation is rather small considering the $40 bil they have already lost due to CW.

scottshea··on "Accidentally" Freelance
I find it interesting that so many people have a hard time comprehending Freelancing yet support entrepreneurs. An insurance or mortgage broker is ultimately a Freelancer who can sell their output to a corporation and I doubt any of them face the same strange stares.
scottshea··on White House Seems Afraid NSA Defunding Law Could Actually Pass Today
Admittedly it is theater but even a symbolic defunding like this can help. If nothing else it is impressive to see that this issue has so much bipartisan traction in the most divided House since before the Civil War.
scottshea··on White House Seems Afraid NSA Defunding Law Could Actually Pass Today
What is interesting is that if the bill passes with a 2/3 majority Presidents are unlikely to use the Veto. Nothing stops them from vetoing it but they usually take the passing with that strong of a margin as an indication that the veto would be overridden anyway.
scottshea··on Using technology to 'cheat' in the Soap Box Derby
I cannot imagine being that age and having that sort of media scrutiny much less while dealing with potentially losing both parents. I do not excuse the actions and certainly the adult in his life played a role. But to have Walker Cronkite call me out on the news, wow.
scottshea··on MIT Moves to Intervene in Release of Aaron Swartz’s Secret Service File
From the article: "But it’s worth noting that names of third parties are already redacted from documents produced under FOIA."

So it would appear that the names are already redacted

scottshea··on The NSA Admits It Analyzes More People's Data Than Previously Revealed
I think it is because they live in a world where secrets are to be kept no matter the cost in the end. This article is just another step in the progressive revelations that have totally destroyed their credibility yet they do not care.
scottshea··on NSA Rejecting FOIA Requests by US Citizens
"Neckbeards sending FOIA requests isn't serving any purpose."

Could you be more judgmental? Whomever is sending these requests, shaving habits aside, may not adhere to your premise that 'The best outcome here is to get them to stop collecting the data'. It could very well be that they just want to know what has been collected on them.

scottshea··on Jury finds protester not guilty in chalk-vandalism case
If I lived in San Diego I would be tempted to organize a chalk-in at BofA branches
