scottishfiction··on Building a Text Editor for a Digital-First Newsroom
Thanks. That's kind of you to say. We're also hiring. https://careerssearch.bbc.co.uk/jobs/search
scottishfiction··on Portugal electricity generation temporarily reaches 100% renewable
Scotland managed it from wind alone.

"On one day in particular, 15 May, output from turbines generated enough electricity to power 190% of homes or 99% of Scotland's total electricity demand."

scottishfiction··on To solve problems caused by sitting, learn to squat (2017)
Regardless of stance width or foot angle, it seems that ankle mobility is still a limiting factor for most people. Simply raising the heel on a 1" block seems to allow most people to achieve a full squat.

However, there's still a huge difference between getting your hip crease below your knee for a moment, and being able to sit in the bottom of a squat for a prolonged period in comfort.

scottishfiction··on One year of cycling to work
I would say it's necessary in all climates - in colder climates you wrap up warmer, which means the same amount of sweat. On shower availability - all the companies (big and small) that I've worked for in Glasgow and London have had showers and cycle parking.
scottishfiction··on Slack is the opposite of organizational memory
My thoughts on your comments are the same as my thoughts on the article. These are cultural problems that Slack is simply exposing. If there was no Slack, something else would fill the need for your middle management to track everyone's 'productivity'.
scottishfiction··on 16 year old app developer: Plagiarist or Prodigy?
I find it odd too.
scottishfiction··on 16 year old app developer: Plagiarist or Prodigy?
I'm not sure it is. I suspect it's intended as a genuine term of endearment and the author is oblivious to the negative connotation. Still unfortunate.
scottishfiction··on Mothers who regret having children are speaking out
This is a major factor. I have a 2-year old girl with another baby imminent. I have 6 households of my family all within a 20 minute drive. Like you say, aside from the practical benefits and savings on childcare, clothing etc., the psychological benefit of knowing we have that support is immeasurable.

Given the impending arrival of my second child, I find myself wondering about those with less support. What does a pregnant single mother of one do when she goes in to labor? Where does her child go? In to state care??

I have great respect for parents with less support than I have.

scottishfiction··on A Type of Road Junction that Kills Cyclists
> In the case of this unsafe intersection, responsibility is diffuse - it is split between driver, cyclist, local government, and the original contractor.

Arguably, the cyclist had right of way and did everything expected of them in the situation. Also, the original contractor was following the specifications given to them by local government. Therefore responsibility can really only be placed with two parties; primarily with local government as they should be designing fault-tolerant intersections, and secondarily with the driver approaching from the east.

scottishfiction··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2018)
That's possibly it, but I'd have thought the proximity to Leeds would have offered a good choice of roles within commuting distance.
scottishfiction··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2018)
Is there something I'm missing here. Is Harrogate particularly low paying? I work in Glasgow - which has one of the lowest costs of living in the UK - and I would be surprised to see anyone looking for those skill sets here offering anything less that £30k, even for a junior dev.
scottishfiction··on NSA’s top talent is leaving because of low pay, flagging morale, unpopular reorg
> should be motivated by public service, not remuneration. It's strange that this should be such a widely held belief given that it relates to the top job in the most capitalistic country on earth.
scottishfiction··on Amazon delivery drivers complain about bad work conditions
It's wishful thinking to believe that any company has a moral responsibility. Companies only have legal/fiscal responsibilities. If you expect companies to act morally in the long-term you don't understand capitalism.
scottishfiction··on The Gig Economy Celebrates Working To Excess
I hope they are angry; at their own leaders for failing to provide the same, and not based in some misguided theory on Scottish subsidies, which is a far more complex issue than many tabloids would have their readers believe.

Stats here paint are more nuanced picture: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/comment/are-the-s...

scottishfiction··on The Gig Economy Celebrates Working To Excess
I also went to Strathclyde :)

In Scotland at least, student loans are only used for living expenses, similar to your experience. Tuition fees are paid by the Scottish Government, as education is a devolved power [1].

In England, tuition fees are paid by the student, usually through a student loan, and are capped at £9k/year.

[Warning: political] I couldn't answer on Labour's priorities. They're becoming increasingly irrelevant north of the border, and increasingly impotent south of the border.

scottishfiction··on Hiring without whiteboards
No. I said exactly that, and provided the formula for the area of the circle, and was still asked to do the calculation.
scottishfiction··on The Gig Economy Celebrates Working To Excess
> My first wife worked a 9-5 W-2 job during her labor with our second child.

Are you confusing 'labor' and 'pregnancy'? The Lyft driver suspected she was in labor (i.e. experiencing contractions) and continued to work, operating a vehicle no less. Is the same true of your first wife?

scottishfiction··on The Gig Economy Celebrates Working To Excess
While we're correcting misconceptions... it is most definitely 'free' in Scotland.
scottishfiction··on Hiring without whiteboards
Fog Creek is listed. I once interviewed there and was asked to calculate the volume of a cylinder. Have they changed there approach?
scottishfiction··on Things You Notice When You Quit the News
I wouldn't say that its an unreasonable theory. There's also the tendency for those working in media to be of the left. My main point though is that any perceived bias comes from the individuals that happen to be working on that production. The organisation itself is non-bias and has many measures to avoid bias.
scottishfiction··on Things You Notice When You Quit the News
Disclaimer: I work for the BBC. The BBC doesn't have 'a clear political affiliation', and neither does Channel 4. Both are public service broadcasters that are committed to non-bias reporting. However, they are run by people, and people are bias.
scottishfiction··on Silicon Valley Has an Empathy Vacuum
This argument then goes full circle. The government reflect the will of the people and the people currently believe that globalization and immigration are the source of all their ills - not automation. Why do believe this? Because of a failure of the free press, exacerbated by the filter bubble of social media - which is the responsibility of SV.
scottishfiction··on Smoking “causes hundreds of DNA changes”
It would be unfair to assume Prof Stratton is unaware of this model, rather than simply tailoring a technical finding to a non-technical audience.
scottishfiction··on The Dutch Reach: Clever Workaround to Keep Cyclists from Getting “Doored”
The point is that the non-assertive position isn't 'playing it safe'. You're no more out of the flow of traffic unless the lane is extra wide, you're signalling to following cars that they are welcome to overtake, and you have robbed yourself of any margin for error when a car misjudges their pass and squeezes you in to a parked car or railing.

You're right that the assertive approach is no substitute for segregated infrastructure, but in an imperfect world of mixed-use roads, it's the best way to stay safe, and is the method taught and recommended by many bodies here in the UK.

scottishfiction··on The Dutch Reach: Clever Workaround to Keep Cyclists from Getting “Doored”
Your comments suggest someone who doesn't do a lot of cycling in traffic. Correct me if I'm wrong. You say that young or old cyclists will get 'clobbered' - what do you mean by this? That a car approaching from the rear will see them riding assertively and simply plow in to them? If not that then what? That the cars will pass them closely as they are forced to move further in to the other lane? If that's your assertion then as others have stated, an assertive lane position is exactly what will save you in this situation - as you have the room on the inside to avoid the passing car.
scottishfiction··on Is projecting a message onto the wall of a building a trespass?
The full opinion in the article goes on to explain that it would be more appropriate to bring the case under nuisance laws, rather than trespass, or indeed vandalism.
scottishfiction··on How I Got the $84k Hepatitis C Drug for $1500 by Buying It from India
Scotland, Wales and NI do. And England has only a nominal charge.
scottishfiction··on What to do when your self-driving car decides to drive you to the police
You could argue that grandparent's criticism was presented as the more objective 'poorly written', which suggests a lack of skill on the author's part. Whereas the parent seems to address the style of writing, which is more subjective and less demanding of citation.
scottishfiction··on The Best Teacher I Never Had
Would this not reward teachers who give the students the best experience, rather than the best education. I think it would be naive to expect students to be rational actors* in this market.
