scott_karana··on Cards Against Humanity Redistributes Your Wealth
Women, especially single moms, make less and often need to spend more to survive.

Plus, while Pedro and Ian have women on the pictures, it sounds like those were sent after receiving the gifts, so that couldn't have been part of the selection process.

Plus the trans individuals, whose identity or desired direction of transition I won't guess.

At the end of the day, who even gives a shit who they're helping? It's a private, for profit company sacrificing profits and trying to do "good", as seen through their own lens. Power to them.

scott_karana··on Japan eyes startup visa program
Concealed/externalizer, then?

Still much less expensive than in the US, inarguably.

scott_karana··on How Duterte Turned Facebook into a Weapon, with Help from Facebook
It only works for Slashdot because it's a very homogenous audience.
scott_karana··on Steam is no longer supporting Bitcoin
GP's post was just a pun/joke. Think you missed it :)
scott_karana··on Portugal’s radical drug policy is working. Why hasn’t the world copied it?
I was under the impression that anyone in the Philippines was encouraged to kill drug dealers, which just masks culture/sectarian clashes?

Police-only is much different. (Though still immoral IMO)

scott_karana··on Portugal’s radical drug policy is working. Why hasn’t the world copied it?
Fundamentally, it's because it scares people too much.

America isn't desperate enough, or brave enough, to try.

scott_karana··on Microsoft launches Windows 10 on ARM
I can't see why a 5W TDP Intel SOC wouldn't also be sufficient for that purpose. The Snapdragon 835 is 4.5W.

Why the specific ISA desire?

scott_karana··on Randomize your WiFi MAC address on Ubuntu
I wish their readme would show some examples of leaked information from reference dhcp clients, so we could tangibly see why that's an improvement.
scott_karana··on Judge Tells Uber Lawyer: ‘It Looks Like You Covered This Up’
That's still different than bringing literal, patented design files with you. ;)

Time to invent: 0

scott_karana··on As a solo developer, I decided to offer phone support
There's a truism about gender: when men complain, it's because they want something solved. When women complain, it's because they want sympathy.

Doesn't mix and match well unless you consciously try to handle it differently.

scott_karana··on Judge Tells Uber Lawyer: ‘It Looks Like You Covered This Up’
"Paying a Google employee to steal their designs and sell them to you" is vastly different than regular industrial espionage.
scott_karana··on Bitcoin hits $10,000
Popularity, and all that naturally follows.
scott_karana··on U.S. judge says Uber withheld evidence, delays Waymo trial
Evidence of criminal activities could become apparent during a civil trial, and lead to subsequent criminal charges.

Plus perjury, etc.

scott_karana··on Woman offers WaPo false tale about Roy Moore in effort to discredit the paper
Why isn't that possible, if only in the "pissed of CEO talks to subsidiary president"?

AWS grosses ~$4Bn yearly, so if the CIA truly spends $0.9Bn (~23%) favours can happen and doors can get opened.

There's nothing "direct" about that, to be sure, but "give me WaPo EOC's cell number" is viable.

scott_karana··on What Bikini Atoll Looks Like Today
Did you miss "in war against non-combatants"? Hiroshima and Nagasaki were exactly that. Even Tokyo was considered.

PS, Pearl Harbour was against military targets, and peacetime is arguable considering the embargoes, etc. Still not "high ground" by any means, but hardly unprecedented. The US already had a fleet there precisely in case it was needed against the Japanese empire.

scott_karana··on Workers at Amazon's main Italian hub, German warehouses strike on Black Friday
Chrysler had the same problem, and Fiat's acquisition was their savour.

Ford's financials were better at the time (lots of strong European subsidiaries) and they managed to tough it out.

Toyota, Honda, etc don't have the same union in their US factories.

scott_karana··on How to Stop Advertising Notifications from the Google Photo App
I love LineageOS, but using it still doesn't prevent OS-level privacy/attack vectors like the recent "report cell tower location despite location services being off" mishap/invasion. (1)

Yes, Android is open source, but at the end of the day Google is the dominant contributor, so you're still subject to their will... (just like Chromium)

scott_karana··on How to Stop Advertising Notifications from the Google Photo App
Unlike iOS, virtually all of the Android userland, and all of its SDK, is also open source: AOSP is the name of the project containing it all.

IIRC only two major things aren't included: binary blob-only drivers, and proprietary Google apps: Play store, Maps, etc.

Despite those limitations, you can practically just `git clone` and build the entire OS for your device. :-)

scott_karana··on “I thought I could ship at least 700 units to stay in business”
Cost of living and wages are different around the world... ;)

scott_karana··on Google collects cell tower info even if location services are disabled
Buy a new 6S then. Apple doesn't immediately abandon their phones, so there's no need to buy the newest out of habit.
scott_karana··on Google collects cell tower info even if location services are disabled
What the hell happened to the principle of least privilege?!

Yes, your carrier already has this information, and should be considered depending on the threat model you're concerned about.

However, NO, this does not mean that other unrelated parties have any business with the data!

The attack surface goes up exponentially with every additional data holder.

scott_karana··on Google collects cell tower info even if location services are disabled
Sure. And while we're at it, since Google is more secure than the IRS, let's just give them all your tax data too! /s
scott_karana··on Six Years After Fukushima, Robots Finally Find Reactors’ Melted Uranium Fuel
Water sampling happens frequently at various points near the reactor, all of which showed levels at expected bounds to date.

scott_karana··on Germany bans children's smartwatches
Bullshit. They're already "activated" if they can hear the key phrase in the first place.

In only the absolute best case, the always-on microphone is backed by a local-only module that picks up the keyphrase, and sends only subsequent communications to the cloud.

scott_karana··on Tesla Roadster
Modern Corvettes, and classic Porsche 911 Targas all have similar roofs. They are less practical, but lighter, and sell well.
scott_karana··on Tesla Roadster
The S and the original Roadster had highly publicized pre-orders too... nothing new for them. ;)
scott_karana··on Tesla Roadster
Wave 3 requires lighter, denser, cheaper batteries that we haven't achieved yet.
scott_karana··on Security alerts on GitHub
It's still a many to many problem in both cases.

Option 1: Adding feature to npm/composer/gem/pip ad infinitum

Option 2: add per-language parser support to the alerting tool instead.

Option 2 doesn't necessitate a new (information-duplicating, still potentially error prone) standard, and can likely leverage available, tested libraries ;-)
