scopecreep··on Is the Micro Machines guy still the fastest-talking man on the planet? (2016)
Didn't some unattended kid choke on one and their parents sued?
scopecreep··on NFL warns teams not to destroy their Surface Pro tablets
Seems like it would be but in my (limited) experience watching NFL games the announcers just call them iPads anyway. Then they or their co commentator corrects themselves with the sponsor friendly Brand Name.
scopecreep··on Boffins build microphone safety kit to detect eavesdroppers
I just blacklist the device driver for my integrated mic & webcam in Windows with group policies. Good luck monitoring me with a mic that the OS doesn't even recognize.

I ever want to record anything I have an actual mic and audio interface that I use that I can unplug when not in use.

scopecreep··on Last Pass Hacked
I'd do a password manager and a VPN provider. Then spend a ton of money on ads on podcasts and youtube videos (which is odd since neither VPN hosting nor password managers make enough money to pay for that many ads).

They'd probably all have a similar catchy name. Maybe one that implies that it's from a foreign country known for having more consumer protections but is actually based 10 minutes outside of Langley Virginia.

Oh wait...

scopecreep··on My son has set the house up with a Pi-Hole
AdGuard allows 'approved ads', which for some of us is a dealbreaker.
scopecreep··on A New Jailbreak for John Deere Tractors Rides the Right-to-Repair Wave
Modern tractors are more technologically advanced than a Tesla.

If you can run a modern planter or sprayer with autodrive/gps then copy/pasting a string of text into a terminal is not going to be a problem.

scopecreep··on Why Firefox Deserves Its Sad Decline
Firefox the browser is great. The developers are great. Pretty much everyone else at mozilla (the execs, marketing, and the graphic designers that feel the need to reinvent some minor part of the wheel every 3-5 years to justify their existence) can all pound sand.

Someone needs to do to Firefox what Firefox did to Netscape, except this time instead of ditching a legacy codebase they need to ditch their woeful corporate leadership.

scopecreep··on Tell HN: Brave Browser is still messing with affiliate links
Brave browser is literally an intelligence gathering honeypot funded by the guy who created a big data analytics company with an extensive history of working with intelligence services [1].

But yeah. That darn google being the default search provider is very troubling.

scopecreep··on Gambling and Adult content DNS blocking using Mullvad VPN
Doesn't AdGuard allow 'approved ads'?
scopecreep··on Playstation Store removes Studiocanal movies, no refunds offered
They have to be decrypted to be played back. The analog hole cannot be closed.
scopecreep··on The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes (2020)
Apple made over $4 billion selling ads last year.
scopecreep··on macOS coreaudiod high CPU utilization with Firefox or Chrome
Is this why my 2021 iMac sounds like a jet engine spinning up when I watch a youtube video in Firefox?

I just assumed this was yet another attempt by google to sabotage the competition.

scopecreep··on Mac: It Just Works–Terribly
I eventually settled on CursorSense to fix this because nothing else I tried actually fixed it. Sucks to have to pay $10 to fix something that is a basic OS setting on literally every other modern desktop OS.
scopecreep··on The $100K+ forgery scandal that’s roiling PC game collecting
Assuming you can trust them. All 3 of the major baseball card grading companies are being investigated by the feds for widespread fraud right now. Same companies also grade Pokemon & Magic the Gathering cards and there have been some high profile fakes of those (that were graded as authentic) highlighted recently as well.
scopecreep··on Making macOS Behave Itself
I think it also requires a M1 processor.
scopecreep··on Hackers can infect 100 Lenovo models with unremovable malware
Why anyone ever buys anything other than a ThinkPad (if you absolutely must go with Lenovo) I have no idea. Pretty much every other line of laptops they make is infamously bad, and has been for decades.
scopecreep··on First Raspberry Pi Powered Ultra-Small Form Factor Rugged for Defense, Aerospace
https://rpilocator.com/ is handy for anyone looking for them in stock anywhere.
scopecreep··on When Telecom Companies Search Your Home for Piracy
Someone hurts my dog, on my property, with no warrant? And they aren't even cops?

They better bring more than 30 people with them is all I'm saying. And some EMT's because I live like an hour from the nearest emergency medical treatment.

scopecreep··on When Telecom Companies Search Your Home for Piracy
They meet my 2 Rottweilers and my German Shepard?
scopecreep··on Show HN: Search for a domain expert on Reddit
But semi-anonymous posts on social media are?

If so there's a lot more Navy SEALs than I was lead to believe.

scopecreep··on CCleaner v5.45 Introduces Data Collection with No Way to Opt-Out
I think you mean to say "Valve has been paying developers to fix the AMD drivers for years now, since AMD can't be bothered."
scopecreep··on Loudness Penalty: Find out if audio will be turned down by streaming services
A great example of this is the album Death Magnetic by Metallica.

The album version is compressed to hell but the version that shipped with Guitar Hero has none of that extra compression, presumably because someone who wasn't deaf mixed it.

The difference is night and day.

scopecreep··on Interns with toasters: how I taught people about load balancers
I feel like if you have to teach them about load balancers as college interns, FB needs to find a better school to pull interns from.
scopecreep··on How Slack Stays Secure During Hyper Growth
Slack was described to me as IRC + tmux for people too stupid to figure out irc & tmux.

In my (limited) experience this seems true to me.

scopecreep··on How the US Pushed Sweden to Take Down the Pirate Bay
You mean the one I used last night to watch Dunkirk? Great detective work there Lou.
scopecreep··on Old Battlefield games re-killed after EA’s legal warning
This is how it was for many years. Decades even. It was fine.

They weren't exactly "homemade" servers either. There was an entire industry of game server rentals and these were datacenter rack servers connected to fat pipes.

It wasn't unusual at all to find third-party servers with way better pings (and higher player caps) than the official servers.

I don't remember the official bf1942 servers ever having 32v32 player matches but that was fairly common for thirdparty servers for example.

scopecreep··on 2018 Intel NUC Models
Looking to do something similar and was worried about compatibility for the disk enclosure. Mind sharing which one you went with that works with freebsd?
scopecreep··on Guitar browser game with a real guitar
Neat tool. Would be nice to be able to set tuning as I keep my guitars in Eb.

Also I'll be "that guy": Can we get a tab mode - maybe with an option to display the note as well for us complete amateurs?

scopecreep··on Ask HN: C# DocGen like Javadoc?
That looks a lot like the format for auto-generated method comments from VS.net ~2013 or so.
scopecreep··on Microsoft’s Monopoly Hangover
They have been trying for years. I still have several emails from before I retired offering $250 MS point gift cards or Xbox One consoles just for submitting an app for approval.

Still couldn't be bothered.
