scns··on A giant star may have destroyed itself in one of the rarest explosions
> It can make them feel better by giving them a chance to look down on someone else.

That's the idea but it does not work. Self esteem is still negative afterwards

scns··on Use your Nvidia GPU's VRAM as swap space on Linux
Not that simple. 4 dimms were getting higher clocks on 2 CCD Ryzen models (12 & 16 cores) compared to those with one CCD. Motherboard topology is a factor too.

scns··on Habitual coffee intake shapes the microbiome, modifies physiology and cognition
Even on the "milder" Methylphenidate you can experince clenching jaw, grinding teeth and a chafed tongue when consuming coffee, tea and even dark chocolate.
scns··on Ubuntu 26.04
it's surprising to new users (in a good way, i was happy when i found it) let's remove it.
scns··on Girl, 10, finds rare Mexican axolotl under Welsh bridge
The UK is sometimes warmer in winter than other european countries further south because of the gulf stream.
scns··on Stanford report highlights growing disconnect between AI insiders and everyone
> there is nothing to be positive about

Even though i'm quite anti AI, recycling in Taiwan, killing weeds with lasers and detecting cancer beg to differ.

scns··on F-15E jet shot down over Iran
> which Trump promptly tore up because he has the mental capacity of a fourth-grader.

That would be an insult to fourth graders IMO, my son happens to be one.

scns··on Amazon is adding a fuel surcharge to fees it collects from third-party sellers
Are record companies still charging artists for vinyl breakage on mp3 downloads?
scns··on U.S. stocks are set to deliver their worst quarter in nearly four years
You can, into the ground.

scns··on The gold standard of optimization: A look under the hood of RollerCoaster Tycoon
> it is mainly a question if the game is fun to play.

10000x this. Miyamoto starts with a rudimentary prototype and asks himself this. Sadly it seems for many fun is an afterthought they try to patch in somehow.

scns··on Our commitment to Windows quality
> where Linux emulating Window's entire API space for games with worse drivers is

sometimes more performant.

scns··on Wired headphone sales are exploding
The newer Beyerdynamic models have detachable cables. They sell USB-C cables which i have not used but i am very content with the three out of the four pairs of cans i own by them. The pair i dislike are wireless ones. If you want em for music on the go i'd recommend the DT 700 Pro X.
scns··on Wired headphone sales are exploding
Really deep bassnotes can't be reproced by vinyl. The grooves would get too wide IIRC, it's a physical limitation.
scns··on Wired headphone sales are exploding
> they last forever

Sadly have to disagree. I use Beyerdynamic though where you can order parts to repair em yourself, which i already did.

[edit] cannot recommend their wireless stuff produced in China, the worst i ever had. The big corded cans are still manufactured in Germany.

scns··on Qatar helium shutdown puts chip supply chain on a two-week clock
The clips i saw of him talking looked like hard core brown nosing to me, pardon my french. He sat on Trumps table when Bad Bunnys' half time show was on the screens in Mar a Lago too.
scns··on Croatia declared free of landmines after 31 years
That is mind blowing, no pun intended.
scns··on Pope tells priests to use their brains, not AI, to write homilies
> the Catholic Church is the largest non-government provider of education and health care in the world.

Hm. In germany Catholic day care is funded by the state ie taxes by over 90%. Military chaplains 100%. Would be surprised if the difference is bigger in schools and hospitals. I heard that in France there is an actual separation of church and state and as a result the church is rather poor.

scns··on Carl Sagan's Baloney Detection Kit: Tools for Thinking Critically (2025)
The article links to an article about Sagans' prediction of the decline of america. Strangely fitting nowadays.

> I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time — when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness…

scns··on How to make a living as an artist
> I'm not completely sure where that comes from - maybe an upbringing in a religious culture that emphasized humility?

Empasized humility or crushed any sense of self worth?

scns··on Frontier AI agents violate ethical constraints 30–50% of time, pressured by KPIs
> a human may make an "(un)ethical" decision based on their social background, religion, a chat with a pal over a beer about the conundrum, their ability to find a new job, financial situation etc.

The stories they invent to rationalise their behaviour and make them feel good about themselves. Or inhumane political views ie fascism which declares other people worth less, so it's okay to abuse them.

scns··on Omega-3 is inversely related to risk of early-onset dementia

scns··on Leaked chats expose the daily life of a scam compound's enslaved workforce

scns··on PlayStation 2 Recompilation Project Is Absolutely Incredible
Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 2 11/10.

Seiken Densetsu 3 is good too. Only released in Japan but got translated by fans to be played on emulators. Now part of Collection of Mana for Switch and officially remade in 3D for Switch, PS4, XBox and Windows named Trials of Mana.

scns··on Fedora Asahi Remix is now working on Apple M3
> I can't think of any credible reason not to have universal healthcare at this point.

When you grab em by their Amygdala, the naked monkeys will do what you want. Even to their own detriment.

As soon as they are in fight-or-flight-mode, (most) people cannot be reasoned with.

Sad but true
