science404··on GWSL: Run graphical Linux apps in WSL
Can run wine on windows finally?
science404··on Python rounds float values by converting them to string and then back
Misleading title is misleading...

CPython rounds float values by converting them to string and then back

science404··on Building Standalone Python Applications with PyOxidizer
Is PyOxidizer going to make it any harder to 'decompile' one of these Python executables? Of course, once you have the bytecode it's easy to recover the source code, but I wonder if something could be built into this tool to make it ever-so-slightly more difficult.

Nuitka has the potential to solve this issue, but it seems not ready yet.

Anyone know if/how Dropbox does it?

science404··on Octahedral Impostors
'octahedral' could mean it has the same symmetries as an octahedron, not necessarily that it's an octahedron.
science404··on Vectorized Production Path Tracing
Believe it or not, performance.. Embree holds up against Nvidia GPUs and Optix, at least it did in 2014 (see: https://embree.github.io/data/siggraph2014_embree_paper.pdf)
science404··on Resonance Audio: Multi-platform spatial audio at scale
guess this superceeded Songbird: https://google.github.io/songbird/, previously on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15031828

edit: indeed, https://github.com/google/songbird now redirects to https://github.com/google/resonance-audio

science404··on Introducing Amazon EC2 P3 Instances
Why Ireland and not the UK? I can imagine a lot of startups/banks in London could use this... Brexit fears?
science404··on Songbird: Spatial Audio Encoding on the Web
Worth mentioning that this is just a box-shaped room. How many early reflections are calculated?
science404··on Nvidia Announces PCIe Tesla V100
Yes but they are limited in size and in precision to FP16, which is not sufficient for most applications, especially scientific computing... What this person is asking I think is: Can you actually think of another concrete application?
science404··on DeepLearning10: The 8x Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti GPU Monster
Can confirm that. Have this box (with 8 K80s) and we measured 90dB next to the box..
science404··on AAC Licensors

science404··on Library-managed 'arXiv' spreads scientific advances rapidly and worldwide
There's something I've always wondered about.. what do you do if you upload your journal submission to arxiv but it's later rejected? That possibility has always been a deterrent to submitting to arxiv for me. Seems to me this discussion assumes arxiv uploads will be accepted to some journal eventually..
science404··on GPUs for Google Cloud Platform
They aren't the first..

science404··on NVIDIA Announces the GeForce GTX 1000 Series
No word on double-precision performance? Could replace the Titan Z and Titan (black) as a good CUDA-application card..
science404··on Korean Fan Death
Yes, we should. If the general statement about fans is not true, then the general statement about how South Koreans believe in fan death loses validity. The author didn't do their research.
science404··on Julia: A fresh approach to numerical computing
for anyone experiencing issues with arxiv.org, mirror: http://uk.arxiv.org/abs/1411.1607
science404··on Julia: A fresh approach to numerical computing
is it just me or is arxiv.org down? HN effect?
science404··on FFTs and Optical Lenses
Not to the mention the fact that the FFT is an algorithm to compute the DFT. So calling the Fourier transform an FFT is even more of a misnomer.
science404··on Yamaha's Latest Silent Brass
If anyone is interested in brass physical modelling, there are some neat sound examples here: http://www.ness-music.eu/target-systems/brass-instruments
