schwarze_pest··on Training my sense of CO2 ppm
I don't know much about LoRa yet, but i would be interested to tinker with it. Can the LoRa radio of the Aranet4 PRO be used by alternative base stations or is it somehow locked down to their own Aranet PRO base station?

schwarze_pest··on Does the EU's ban on RT also ban Tor?
Yes, exactly. If we are talking about media in general I can think of only very few examples that should be banned (like CP). I don't need anyone to decide what I'm allowed or not allowed to consume. If I want to study russian propaganda or american propaganda or "Mein Kampf" than that's what I should be able to do--without any censor.
schwarze_pest··on Firefox lost 50M users since 2019
2650 tabs open right now. I'm sure I had more open in the past. No major performance impact. If I click on the "List all tabs" button it takes a second to render the list. The PC is 5 years old, not even close being state of the art.

At least my wikipedia tells me that.

schwarze_pest··on Goircd: Minimalistic simple IRC server written on Go
After IRC we switched to SILC for many years. It was quite nice and very IRCish (+ crypto), but after a long time without new development and maintenance, we went with matrix. Two years ago it was still a bit bumpy. A lot of work went into it and now it's mostly smooth sailing -- can recommend.
schwarze_pest··on Nvidia calling gaming PC owners to put their systems to work fighting Covid-19
No, you are misinformed. For rosetta there is neither a version 7.14.2 (that would be BOINC) nor are there any GPU projects.

schwarze_pest··on Why is nuclear fusion so hard?
Wrong title. Fusion is easy, plasma physics isn't.
schwarze_pest··on Ask HN: How to self-learn electronics?
Because there are none. Please show me a name brand direct heating element soldering station for $100. I would like to buy one.
schwarze_pest··on Firefox 56: Last Stop Before Quantum
> But I cant get my nightly to remember my logins.

Do you mean 'restore previous session'? It was moved from the start page to library and now to the hamburger menu. :/

schwarze_pest··on Firefox 56: Last Stop Before Quantum
Of course it's in nightly.
schwarze_pest··on Doomsday planning for less crazy folk
Sure...

High quality pocket knives: Just 2 examples out of many. Spyderco Para Military 2, Benchmade 940 Osborne.

Full-size multitool: Victorinox SwissTool Spirit

Small multitool: Get a few Victorinox Swiss Army Knives. One for every pocket ;)

Camping, backpacking, hunting, light-duty survival knife: Get a Mora knife. If you are a real "operator" get yourself a Bark River Bravo.

Ok, I've stopped reading there.

schwarze_pest··on Review: The NES Classic Edition and all 30 games on it
Apparently, NERD aka Nintendo European Research and Development developed a new emulator.

That's not a SNES game. There is Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Street Fighter II and Street Fighter Alpha 2.

schwarze_pest··on Ask HN: Good sci-fi movies?
Forgot about that one... Not a movie, but besides the very well known TV shows (ST:TNG, BSG, Firefly, etc.) I can really recommend The Expanse.
schwarze_pest··on Ask HN: Good sci-fi movies?
Planet of the Apes (1968), Forbidden Planet (1956), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Brazil (1985), Contact (1997)
schwarze_pest··on The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus Review: Iterating on a Flagship
Apple has complete control over their OS. They can keep their kernel interfaces stable if they want.

Google can't do this with their current development model. They are not in charge of the Linux kernel interfaces. Let's say it's 2019, Android Quaker Oats is here and Google would like to bring it to the Pixel. Quaker Oats is based on Linux 5.0. Qualcomm develops their drivers out of tree and the latest kernel that gets support for the Snapdragon 821 is Linux 4.69. Well, tough luck, Google and Pixel owners, Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwich is all you get.

schwarze_pest··on The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus Review: Iterating on a Flagship
> I think Google is finally recognizing this, and attempting to replicate it with the Pixel.

They are still not there with Pixel. As long as they don't have their own SoC, there won't be proper long time support for their phones.

schwarze_pest··on FreeBSD 11.0 amd64 binaries
People are doing this wrong for ages. It is brought up with every release. That will not change.

The only way to change it, is to adapt and change the release rollout process. If it would be really a big problem for the project, they would probably have done that a long time ago. Just my guess.

Hubbard wants FreeBSD to use launchd. Hubbard is in no position to enforce this if the project doesn't like it.
