schwank··on Amazon Sends 1,700 Alexa Voice Recordings to a Random Person
I would disagree. I despise voice interfaces and despite working for one of the major tech companies that build these devices and interfaces, I use exactly zero. I do trust my employer to do it correctly based on the processes I witness every single day, but I don't own any because I don't like voice interfaces. Remote control on my phone, sure. Clicking the button to change a song, sure. But no voice, thanks.
schwank··on Texans say voting machines changing straight-ticket choices
As a kid in Michigan I remember my parents waiting in long lines to vote. After 20 years as a voter in Oregon I have to say our system is great. We recently received the voter guide by mail, and will receive our actual ballot shortly. Take your time filling in the scantron circles while you peruse the guide, put it in the anonymity envelope, sign it to attest, drop it at city hall or the library. I work for a major internet company, including on election systems, and yet I still love this paper system. If there is any discrepancy, they just recount.

No missed work, no lines, no profiling. I read all the articles about issues with polling stations and all I can think about is systemic disenfranchisement.

schwank··on In a Detroit Train Station, Ford Looks for the Future
Really wish I could be there this week to check out the festivities. Detroit born and raised but I relocated after graduating from MSU almost 2 decades ago, however my immediate family still lives in the 'burbs'.

I took my wife to Slow's BBQ and to see the train station a couple years back, and it's so great to see some movement here after all these years. Thanks for the link on the clock as well, really cool to see that getting restored.

I was pulling for Amazon HQ2 to be in Detroit as well, but alas...

schwank··on Mark Shuttleworth on where Canonical and Ubuntu Linux are going next
I've been running Mint Cinnamon as my primary OS for a few years on both a Dell Latitude E74xx and a homebuilt mini-ITX box with no such issues. The laptop is integrated gfx and the desktop is a 1050gtx at 4k. FF is my main browser and I have not seen any such behavior.
schwank··on Google News to be revamped, incorporate YouTube videos and magazines
I was already unhappy with Amp and the last redesign. I have used GNews more than most other sites in the past but it's already gotten pretty bad. Add in YouTube and I'm done. Really could use a new aggregator... Will have to check out the newstral.com site linked in another post here. Any other options?
schwank··on Detroit executives are killing off slow-selling cars in favor of SUVs
I grew up in Detroit, and my whole family worked in the industry. My parents met working at GM, but now they refuse to buy GM after how former employees were screwed during the Old/New GM transition. Add in the ignition switch debacle and they are untrustworthy.

Now add in the fact that many don't want to buy SUVs (my grandmother can't get into a SUV) and this is yet another silly short term play that will hurt them in the long run when fuel prices increase. My 2016 gasoline VW Golf wagon gets almost 40mpg highway - show me a SUV that can do that.

But hey, I can always continue to buy European cars, and I will. As much as I would love Detroit to succeed, they just can't see more than 2 years in the future.

schwank··on AWS Media Services – Process, Store, and Monetize Cloud-Based Video
Elastic Transcoder could not handle 4K video, and only worked with static files stored in S3 - it wasn't designed for streaming content.

AWS purchased Elemental in 2015. There is some overlap but Elemental Media* services are more flexible and provide JIT encoding and dynamic ad insertion, to serve a broader market than ET did.

Disclaimer: AWS employee.

schwank··on Amazon engineer will let strangers manage his $50,000 stock portfolio 'forever'
Huh? You can open a Fidelity account with $2500, and buy any stock you want including US and Int'l markets.
schwank··on Android O Beta Program
Not really trying to ding the Nexus line itself, honestly I loved them overall. My N1 far surpassed my expectations, and lived on yet another year after I gave it to a friend. I liked the 6P quite a lot. The 5X/6P generation does seem to have fairly widely reported and consistent issues however.

They used to be subsidized by Google and offered at a lower price point, but at flagship levels they have greater competition. I guess it's time for me to consider yet another new territory with this round... device insurance.

schwank··on Android O Beta Program
My Nexus 6P died last night after <2 years of service, and my wife's first 5X died after only 4 months. Now that the Pixel is priced as a premium device in line with the iPhone and other flagships, I find myself considering a non-Google phone for the first time since the N1 was released.

Given the short support curve for most Android devices from Google and especially from third parties, that device is quite likely to be an iPhone. What was unthinkable to me just a few short years ago is now reality... I type this on a MBP and I might be convert my phone platform now as well. A true testament to the constant change in the marketplace, and the need to evaluate based on features and performance rather than fanboism.

schwank··on Great Progress with DX11 Games Support with WINE 2.3
Appreciate the link... after many years as a Windows/.Net developer, I made the jump to Linux full time after the release of Windows 8. I don't game much anymore but every once in a while I get the itch. I bought Cities:Skylines through Steam, but I've particularly been missing the racing genre. The boilingsteam site has some good reviews including the recently released Dirt:Rally. So glad to see things are progressing on Linux, and hopefully that continues as SteamOS picks up... steam.
