schmookeeg··on Intel slashes prices of Xeon 6 CPUs by up to $5,340
Not a very good car. :)

Some of us get crazy with our homelabs. The love of technology is enough of a motivator.

It's cold in my office today. I'm considering that I could use more cores, crunch some ML stuff locally instead of in the cloud, and solve two problems at once. The thermostat for the heater is allllll the way downstairs after all :D

schmookeeg··on I trusted an LLM, now I'm on day 4 of an afternoon project
Brilliant.

I have fought the "lowest cognitive load" code-style fight forever at my current gig, and I just keep losing to the "watch this!" fancytowne code that mids love to merge in. They DO outnumber me, so... fair deuce I suppose.

There is value in code being readable by Juniors and LLMs -- hell, this Senior doesn't want to spend time figuring out your decorators, needless abstractions and syntax masturbation. I just want to fix a bug and get on with my day.

schmookeeg··on Ask HN: I need interviews with datacenter employees for a grad school project
You might head over to the datacenter forum webhostingtalk.com which is riddled with colo types who might help you out.
schmookeeg··on We Need to Talk About Docker Hub
Heh, I seem to have stumbled into /r/UnethicalLifeProTips

...not disagreeing with the approach. :) I swear something like half of my problems in life can be boiled down to poor/absent communication. If you're going to LARP as a grown-up company, as Docker seems to be, then you need to do the work and respond to the emails. Even from the freebie customers.

schmookeeg··on NIH hit with freezes on meetings, travel, communications, and hiring
I assume the NIH was singled out as some sort of vengeance for the CV19 response?

Hopefully they'll restore some semblance of order after the pound of flesh is theatrically exacted.

schmookeeg··on Platforms systematically removed a user because he made "most wanted CEO" cards
"To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize"
schmookeeg··on Americans Are Tipping Less Than They Have in Years
Their income is taxable whether I pay with cash or card. I do not cause the tax code.

Your senses of both etiquette and empathy are bizarre to me.

schmookeeg··on Nvidia announces $3k personal AI supercomputer called Digits
I think some problems arise when you use some 5 year old "install CUDA" blog instead of the official docs. You can get sent down some messy rabbit holes and dependency loops that way. Ask how I know :)
schmookeeg··on Engineer eats efficiently for $2.50 a day (2016)
Amusingly I was thinking about sauerkraut on a burger bun as I love sauerkraut, but then the author said that wasn't.. in budget? or available? I forget his reasoning, but that glimmer of hope was dashed :D

I may go try Kimchi in a burger, but... there will be some sort of protein.

Sorry I didn't enunciate it in the early morning haze, but 20/day would be for two of us. As was the sushi :)

We're DINKs and cooking is a time luxury. Green Chef is our current "exactly the ingredients we need, nothing wasted" source -- and it's not exactly cheap.

First world probs, I know.

schmookeeg··on Engineer eats efficiently for $2.50 a day (2016)
This was interesting until I got to Day 2: Cabbage Burgers. That you can use as ready-meals by freezing them. Then I went out for a $65 meal of Sushi to put them out of my mind.

I'll have my eye peeled for some sort of happy medium, like $20/day, but this feels too much like the masochistic version of frugal-jerk.

schmookeeg··on Ask HN: Is it a bad idea to make an email domain with an uncommon TLD?
We did a fintech startup and used the ever-so-hip-at-the-time .co TLD and several of our client banks would drop inbound emails from us by default, even as a reply-to email. It created some havoc with our sales process until we figured it out and did a quick name pivot.

"never again" -- are .com TLD registrations "enormous" amounts? I think mine are all in the 15 dollar/yr range. You make me think I should go look :)

schmookeeg··on Always go to the funeral (2005)
I have a few folks who I felt wronged me significantly in my life's travels, and they take a bit of rent-free space in my head every once in awhile.

I don't actively search for their obits or anything, but if I learned about a funeral, I'd make the time to visit, stand quietly, and reflect.

Probably not the healthiest thing, but not my unhealthiest quality either. At the moment it is only theoretical. But I can think of 3 or 4 I'm now likely to google up and see what they're up to and assess who is closer to the pine box. :)

schmookeeg··on What's happening with founders over 40?
"jargonauts" is amazing. I've not heard that before, but what a well-fitting shoe. :D
schmookeeg··on Americans React to UnitedHealthcare CEO's Murder: 'My Empathy Is Out of Network'
Possibly because his replacement can now commit even more horrors and blame it on the incumbent. They have a year or three of unlimited enshittification.
schmookeeg··on Blizzard's pulling of Warcraft I and II tests GOG's new Preservation Program
The Warcraft Adventure was terrible. I was working at Bliz at the time. Imagine the worst LucasArts-style fan art with no real story behind it. The true believers would have loved it and anything else released in the Warcraft universe, but.. it was very very "not good"

No argument with your other points though :)

schmookeeg··on Mom jailed for letting 10-year-old walk alone to town
IANAL but this stuff interests me -- looks like Mom was charged with 16-5-60(b) [1]

"A person who causes bodily harm to or endangers the bodily safety of another person by consciously disregarding a substantial and unjustifiable risk that his or her act or omission will cause harm or endanger the safety of the other person and the disregard constitutes a gross deviation from the standard of care which a reasonable person would exercise in the situation is guilty of a misdemeanor."

So either this little half-horse town is a serious stepford hellscape, or Mom eats a grand or two (yay for the GoFundMe) to get a competent lawyer to brush this nonsense away. If they succeed in pressing this case that Mom endangered her child, then I hope the reaction is the installation of guardrails and sidewalks all over that town, such that its budget simply implodes.

Just ridiculous. The whole apparatus at work here makes me sad, and there are layers of impersonal failure and risk aversion at work here. It's very cold, and frankly, the kids watching mom get cuffed in their home means any purported damage we're trying to shield the kids from -- is already done.

The government here needs the adult supervision, not the 10 year old.

schmookeeg··on M4 and M4 Pro Mac minis are probably Apple's best Mac minis
I feel like "boring" is praise for an OS, not a criticism.

I have no problem playing most of my steam game library on my m1 mini, I can only imagine the M4 is even better. Of the games that won't run on macos, yeah, most are "triple AAA" shooters that I spend less time with lately, so all good.

The Beelink ser8 looks cool. If I build another PC, that will be high up in the consideration list. My current PC is a watercooled monstrosity that is about as portable as a bank vault.

schmookeeg··on Ion engines could take us to the solar gravitational lens in less than 13 years
Thank you, from someone who never ever ever wants to watch a video to get a few paragraphs of content.
schmookeeg··on Fuckthis.app – Software products for exasperated people
I enjoyed the quality roast of exfy; even more than the 5Y chart roast that the nasdaq has dished out. :)
schmookeeg··on FTC announces "click-to-cancel" rule making it easier to cancel subscriptions
Came to say this too, basically. The FTC is currently a bright candle in the swamp.

I think we need a word for this work. Maybe disenshittification? :)

schmookeeg··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2024)
Seriously. This grabbed every buzzword I've ever been affiliated with -- but no interest in hybrid. Even if I could rationalize the commute from OAK-SQL, which my lizard brain is trying to do. :) "Maybe get something like a little Beech Skipper and just fly over..."
schmookeeg··on Amusing Ourselves to Death (2014)
I find it really strange that the 3 paragraphs of text at the top needed the comics summarizing them below. Like, did our short attention spans need those little footholds in order to progress through the point being made? :)

Sounds like I need this book added to my reading list. I've not been able to get through Brave New World, but I might give it another try also.

schmookeeg··on New California law requires one-click subscription cancellations

schmookeeg··on Colocation: Non-Clown Hosting
I've said this to any of my engy friends who will listen. (not many) There's a small, yet tangible benefit to having a blank hardware slate to just riff on an idea when it strikes you, and having ample compute/storage/bandwidth to play with the idea. Or to send yourself down a spaghetti sysadmin nightmare you get to untangle. :)

It's been a consistent part of my career since 2007 and I'd hate to not have it. Homelab is great, but spinning up your own VMs, architectures, all of it... is a superset of that same satisfaction.

schmookeeg··on Colocation: Non-Clown Hosting
I live in Alameda and colo in San Jose and would way prefer the shorter drive, even though I never visit my server.. but... this webpage isn't a real product offering is it? Like, you made it in response to the topic post (right?)

I lol'ed regardless. Bravo, and... I may look you up if OpenColo keeps irritating me. They have been surfing that line just below "irritated enough to move". They recently rug-pulled my whole IP block and forced a bunch of reconfig on me I wasn't down for. I'm still salty. Quadranet never did that to me in ~13 years with them. AWS neither come to that.

schmookeeg··on A terrible way to jump into colocating your own stuff
I was gonna ask the same thing, but then she called me a usual broken people and I decided "not me" was a good enough answer :)

This was a tortured way to setup a colo. I bring rackable gear, no switch, and use the colo's "setup station" to do final config, then I rack the sucker. They can always VLAN me and my laptop together somewhere for a final check before I leave. I'd be worried if they couldn't.

schmookeeg··on A terrible way to jump into colocating your own stuff
I've been colo'ing forever. I'd consider a Lantronix spider ipkvm available on request to be like minimum viable colo service. It's usually up in 5 minutes when I submit a ticket to the NOC.

I bet your provider has something like that. It's a godsend when you screw up, say, the hypervisor running state somehow and need bare metal access to unbork it :)

schmookeeg··on What If Ozempic Is Just a Good Thing?
I actually think this is worse in countries with socialized medicine, because now you're not just "openly mockable" but you're also "taxing the system" with your "vice"

Cruel indeed.

schmookeeg··on Ask HN: Is webdev getting complicated without results to show for it?
I wonder if this is why most of my engagements over the last 5-10 years were teams that hired "senior only" engineers, whereas some ocean of HTML updates could be handled by any number of juniors, and also provide a needed training funnel to move people up in seniority.

I certainly don't appreciate the cognitive load a lot of my daily stuff takes. It used to be simpler, more direct, and more satisfying.

schmookeeg··on You Don't Have Time to Read Books That Won't Change Your Life
Ugh, min-max culture is out of control. But I think this essay is actually anti-mediocre-books, which sort of resonates with me. Still, though, I find value in the hunt, and I am too stubborn to stop a book once I've started, so I can't agree with author's ruthless selection criteria, but if it works for them, hey, party on.

...my life, as I define and live it, is improved every time I cheer on Mr. Lee's Rat-Thing during a casual re-read of Snow Crash. :)
