schmookeeg··on Microsoft Publisher will no longer be supported after October 2026
I feel like I have mourned the death of MSPub at least once before.
schmookeeg··on Ask HN: Another "Hacker News" with less AI and more human-focused hacking news?
I've noticed myself and several colleagues have all taken to making little SaaS's for sport -- I'm not sure WHY we've all done that, but it's totally a thing.

Maybe if there was a monthly "Show us your (project/vibe/slop)" thread, it would provide a centralized spot for it all, then you could ignore it, once, at leisure, instead of the filters working overtime. :)

schmookeeg··on 30papers.com – Ilya's 30 essential ML papers, in a beginner friendly format
I feel seen. Straight to the "stuff to read later" bookmark pile/mausoleum :)
schmookeeg··on Fable 5 is Back
I am fully expecting the rollout of a Max 350 plan after July 7.
schmookeeg··on Ask HN: Where is the programming profession going?
Iunno, I feel like being born in a first world country did most of that "top 0.1% of the world" work. That sentence works the same with and without AI/LLMs.

Among peers, I feel like I am top 20%? 30%? maybe, by being a good programmer who is adept at agents. A year ago was the 0.1% point, this stuff is spreading like wildfire. A year from now I think it's going to just be de rigeur that these are our tools now.

Worse, any edge I have from working with this stuff for years is quickly dulled. The tools are evolving fast. My tricks from 3 months ago have been eclipsed.

schmookeeg··on Ask HN: Anthropic banned me from using Claude Code and I don't know what to do
I can't use my Claude Code or GPT subscriptions for API access.

I don't want monthly subs to infrequently used models that I sometimes tap into.

...pretty much that's it. My 10 bucks at OpenRouter has lasted me several months for these edge cases.

schmookeeg··on Ubisoft co-founder Claude Guillemot has died in a plane crash
Your username is painfully not checking out here. :P
schmookeeg··on Ubisoft co-founder Claude Guillemot has died in a plane crash
There are more responses to "hard to schedule, hard to afford" than "defer everything possible"

You can fly something smaller and more inline with your budget

You can share the plane with partners

You can get a motorcycle or boat instead.

...I do not disagree that your presented "option 3" is a common one. That hurts me as both an instructor and a mechanic.

schmookeeg··on Ubisoft co-founder Claude Guillemot has died in a plane crash
You'll want the McSpadden report (formerly the Nall report) here [1]

Pay attention to the accidents per 100,000 hours in commercial vs non-commercial fixed wing. Commercial is about 10-40x safer.

schmookeeg··on Ubisoft co-founder Claude Guillemot has died in a plane crash
A "bad error" in a minivan does this too. The "bad error" in the plane would be flying into a thunderstorm. I equate this gobsmackingly bad judgement with driving a minivan off of a cliff.
schmookeeg··on Ask HN: Due to spam on GitHub, what platforms can I move my projects?
I'm enjoying forgejo as a self-hosted repo. No complaints, and the actions I was using on GH transferred over cleanly. I understand it's not quite fully compatible though, but worth an exploratory smoke test.

I hate the name though and resist saying it aloud. But that's been true of a few of my tools over the years :)

schmookeeg··on A record 242 US cities now have starter homes that cost $1M
"The architectural design has been called "dull,"[4] and the entire concept of the complex is frequently referred to as "dystopian."[4][7][11] Residing in a "self-sufficient living environment" can negatively affect an individual's mental health. In addition, the tightly-packed apartments can cause claustrophobia. The various amenities are restricted by the floor the residents live on, and different floors have different rent prices, which can result in socioeconomic differences between residents."

Yeahhhhhh I'll be first in line for the "does not have the will for this" queue. Yuck.

schmookeeg··on Big Banana Car
I enjoyed this, in all of its silly big banana energy.

I have an overdeveloped anti-authority streak, and I did not like to read that he was pulled over so often, but... I mean... that surely isn't a surprise, right? It's almost like reverse entrapment of the officers :)

schmookeeg··on Big Banana Car
worth it.
schmookeeg··on We built a persistent agent memory layer on Elasticsearch with 0.89 recall
It's sort of the whole tension when you query vectorized data/embeddings -- you need to balance accuracy and recall against the performance you need.

It took me a while to wrap my head around the two terms since they seem similar -- but Accuracy is basically "did i get mostly good results" and Recall is "did I get most of the good results" and they're subtly different. :)

Those two terms, though, will unlock as deep a rabbit-hole as you'd like on the subject.

schmookeeg··on AskHN:How do you handle skill atrophy from using coding agents?
I waltzed into a tech screen thinking I could handcode python after having LLM be primary at it for over a year. Yeah, there's atrophy -- I humiliated myself and took the lesson. :)

There is a meta-argument about whether companies should interview about hand-coding anymore, but... the skills do atrophy. I've been mixing hand-coding into my routines ever since to try to keep those skills lukewarm. I'm not yet sure if I am wasting my time doing so or not.

schmookeeg··on Why I email complete strangers
I assumed this was a longform "Ode to Spam"

...I'm still not sure it isn't. :)

schmookeeg··on Why Is Claude Turning into an a**Hole?
Strange and wonderful how different our experiences are with these tools.

I will get gentle, respectful pushback on certain points when I am on the wrong track. I am 10x grateful to have a collaborator/pair programmer unafraid to challenge me and bring receipts in those instances.

I don't get attitude from Claude. I sometimes give it, but that's my own failing. Once in a great while I'll get a wry turn of phrase that makes me laugh, and those are endearing also.

schmookeeg··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On?
I took a recurring chore at my last day job — optimizing indices against large embedding datasets — and made a little SaaS-y thing [1]. It auto-tunes my vectors and shows how/why the benchmarks shook out like they did, with prettier graphs than I was spinning in Jupyter.

I use it to learn about weird, difficult datasets to optimize for. I've been at it over a year, and have met some interesting people in this obscure niche. It keeps me off of the streets. ;)

I find it amusing that these two stories hit the front page one right after the other.

schmookeeg··on Ask HN: Are most corporate SWE jobs performative?
Please let me know where to send my CV. :) 10000% agree with this. Not all of us need a weekly reinforcement that everything's okay. And if we actually need something, we can speak up without consulting Google Calendar first and waiting for a scheduled safe space to speak up about it.
schmookeeg··on Ask HN: Are most corporate SWE jobs performative?
I would love practical advice on how to say to a manager "I'm not deriving any value from this recurring 1x1 meeting, can we move it to on-demand?"

My 30+ year career has not revealed a way to achieve that yet without repurcussions. However much I'd prefer it.

schmookeeg··on Starlink shifts hardware from one-time purchase to $10/month rental
$199 is expensive hardware? to receive magic internet sent from orbit to wherever you are on the globe?

I feel like if I took my AT&T home internet router, drop-kicked it into the bay, then asked for a replacement, they'd charge me a heck of a lot more than $199. :)

schmookeeg··on The better the autopilot the worse the pilot
Well, don't discount the equal number of affiliate links to tryware.
schmookeeg··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
Oh, that looks lovely. A much more coherent version of the scraps I've been assembling for myself. Kudos, I'll be giving it a whirl :)
schmookeeg··on Data centers consumed 264B gallons of water as drought hits nearly 63% of US
I've been wondering this too (what happens to the warmer water), and haven't found a satisfying or objective explanation. Everything is "AI drinking my water" which... just makes no sense.
schmookeeg··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2026)
Signs that it is a seller's market out there. I expect those hiring are being deluged in all sorts of nonsense, and this is one response to it.
schmookeeg··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
I can't explain why, but the top comment is the funniest thing in this whole episode to me:

Removed for violating Rule #6: Must be a kid and must be stupid.

Common reasons for this remove include but not limited to:

Teens are not considered kids as its a different kind of stupid.
