schlauerfox··on Max Headroom and the World of Pseudo-CGI (2013)
Cyberpunk is the gritty near future Blade Runner inspired style of max headroom (which takes place "5 minutes in the future") and the works of William Gibson. Cypherpunks are the gen x people behind things like PGP and Bitcoin. To quote wikipedia: "A cypherpunk is any individual advocating widespread use of strong cryptography and privacy-enhancing technologies as a route to social and political change."
schlauerfox··on Max Headroom and the World of Pseudo-CGI (2013)
and the angular robot makeup reminds me of Stan Winston's work in HeartBeeps (1981).
schlauerfox··on How a Customer Got Trapped in Ambetter's Ghost Network
article alleges Ambetter failed to provide care to a patient despite best efforts of patient and family, laws and decency. The purpose of the system is what it does. CEO seems to be paid $18M/yr. And so it goes.
schlauerfox··on How a tiny radio station came to play a continuous loop since the late-1990s
maybe it was a 1.5mbps t1 line cost at 128kbps/stream would be about 10 streams? Maybe he was paying a hosting company for bandwidth? Not sure from the article.
schlauerfox··on Homebound: The Long-Term Rise in Time Spent at Home Among U.S. Adults
Yeah, that was more a product of the collusion with oil companies to end public transportation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_streetcar_consp...
schlauerfox··on It's the land, stupid: How the homebuilder cartel drives high housing prices
Don't forget the Lennar tax they impose permanently on the land deed (runs with the land) they sell you you pay each transfer. https://labusinessjournal.com/news/lennar-forces-donation-on...
schlauerfox··on Don't make your own game engine [video]
another advice is Know the consequences of your licenses if you use someone else's engine, and whether they can change terms on you. See: the unity controversy
schlauerfox··on Captain Disillusion debunks David Beckham beach kicks [video]
The crossover with Beakman's World in all but name was amazing.
schlauerfox··on Captain Disillusion debunks David Beckham beach kicks [video]
Alan, and he gets sent to talks sometimes, those are great to watch.
schlauerfox··on Captain Disillusion debunks David Beckham beach kicks [video]
It was more of a demo reel pitching himself to direct a sequel. Give him the job!
schlauerfox··on There Is No Antimemetics Division (2018)
Like Marvel's X-Men character Forget-me-not
schlauerfox··on It's lights out at a cosmic restaurant
It's certainly the end at a restaurant in the universe.
schlauerfox··on I Wasn't the First Person to Find the NJ Coca-Cola Cocaine Factory (2016)
There was some series of books in the 80s about secret things and it talked about the cocaine history. written by William something? I can't find it in a quick search.
schlauerfox··on Apex Surplus – A movie industry props and parts source
I remember after the earthquake (94) they just left the massive pile of wire and youd have to ask the guy to go climb up the pile. RIP All Electronics, Electronics City (burbank). Even Frys is closed now. Is Torrance Electronics still there? Los angeles used to have an aerospace industry after ww2 there was so much. TRW swapmeet was insane. I'm a 40 something now so I only saw it fade away. Rocketdyne is a mall, General Motors Van Nuys is a mall. They shipped everything to Japan then to China over the intervening years so now these surplus things are in akihabara and the shenzhen markets now where production is done.
schlauerfox··on Apex Surplus – A movie industry props and parts source
I bought some automotive diodes there to bring down battery voltage so some motors wouldnt auto shutdown when batteries were fully charged for a major entertainment project. There are still major effects houses in LA but most of the old guard has retired not to mention the pandemic, streaming, media consolodation, CG and strike ending tons of hollywood work.
schlauerfox··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
Generally Gold (aurium) is not bioreactive, it's hardly reactive at all hence it's lustre in the wild since it doesn't tarnish or bond easily. Goldschlager has gold flake in it for human consumption. It's generally considered safe to consume for this reason. The quantity to make an LD50 of inhaled gold would be considerable I imagine, but have no data.
schlauerfox··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
Fashion. I had my great grandmothers rings appraised for probate and got the "these are nice heirlooms, utterly worthless for resale though, the stones are just an okay clarity and the cut is very out of fashion these days. Keep them as nice rememberances." They must have said the same thing thousands of times.
schlauerfox··on Show HN: Resurrecting a dead Dune RTS game
Point of law: in the united states, there is no such thing as abandonware legally, copyright is automatic and not selling it or maintaining one's copyright enforcement doesn't mean it is legal to make copies. This is pretty widely ignored, and there are ill defined exceptions to copyright defined by the library of congress. Internet culture seems to condone it for reasons of convenience and preservation, regardless of copyright holders rights. Seems to be an unsettled moral question to me, as copyright duration is so oppressive. Where did you find a list of Scene releases to generate that info?
schlauerfox··on Show HN: Resurrecting a dead Dune RTS game
This early 90s MIDI era music seems to have a genre name now of 'dungeon synth', not sure if that's widely used or just an effect of this collector: https://bandcamp.com/thedungeonsyntharchives https://www.youtube.com/@TheDungeonSynthArchives But it's nice in the way environmental music is, I use it to work to as it seems to hold back my distractions in the way non lyrical music can for me.
schlauerfox··on The Typeset of Wall·E (2018)
It's all contracts. My father is named because the effects company he worked for had a contract for credit, the guilds similarly enforce their contracts on producers. It was common for many many people involved in production directly to not get credit, you may be underestimating the sheer number of people involved in making a major film. Industry people joke that the caterers are very important, and to be listed above them is a privilege, but a wry hint of truth because an army moves on its stomach.
schlauerfox··on There is still the need for a better Goodreads alternative
I really love my Bookwyrm instance bookrastinating. I've moved off of other social media entirely to mastodon, lemmy and bookwyrm. it's just enough with nice people without the horror show of the commercial ones. I donate to my instances. It's a good time.
schlauerfox··on FAA investigating how counterfeit titanium got into Boeing and Airbus jets
Reminds me of when a favorite restaurant is bought and changes just enough to not be a favorite anymore, despite seemingly having the same menu. That feels like a similar analogy. Engineering has important details in the subtlety.
schlauerfox··on Sony Pictures Acquires Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
For some historical referrence, there was a court decision in 1948 stopping the movie studios from owning the theater chains too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Paramount_Pic.... I worked in a movie theater in the early 2000s and the studios/distributors had theaters by the throat anyway. Disney for example could demand any terms they wanted for allowing for example star wars and theaters bid against each other regionally for an artificially limited number of 'prints' (today they're hard drives) and could insist on 100% of the take, a % of concession sales, pretty brutal terms. I don't know what the industry is like in the last 15 years. Disney has owned the El Capitan in hollywood for years, though. Not sure how that was allowed as an exception if the rule was only recinded in 2020. Maybe just chains.
schlauerfox··on Nearly 80% of Americans Say Fast Food Is Now a Luxury
It led to waste, now they push don't assemble till ordered, the number crunching and metric pressure is absurd.
schlauerfox··on Wikimedia Enterprise – APIs for LLMs, AI Training, and More
LLM output can't be copywritten as it's not the work of a human. The company would presumably have to include attribution to every piece of data the system is trained on for every query? Seems absurd, but then how would attribution work? Not really considered when the license was written.
schlauerfox··on Raspberry Pi Ltd is considering an IPO
I've started seeing PI show up on the DIN rails in some industrial equipment, usually HID related. PLCs are built to safety critical standards, a PI with some error might go executing code off into never-never land, where a PLC will fail to a known output state. Obvious oversimplification. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safety_integrity_level
schlauerfox··on Adobe Photoshop Source Code (2013)
why is source code submission to the LOC not necessary like a book to register copyright? Seems reasonable they hold it in escrow for 30 years or whatever reasonable term copyright should be.
schlauerfox··on Stack Overflow simply bans folks who don't want their advice used to train AI
How is the use of CC-BY-4.0 by a LLM going to be attributed to satisfy the license conditions is my question. Every answer by the model contains the work as part of it's token weights and can regurgitate.
schlauerfox··on Microsoft closes several large Bethesda affiliated game studios

schlauerfox··on How I think about debt
A house has intrinsic worth. It is a house, people live in it, it provides shelter by it's nature as a house. How many dollars it's worth to others is extrinsic, but it certainly has intrinsic value.
