schiang··on Ex-Netflix VP found guilty of awarding tech contracts in exchange for bribes
You can argue he stole engineering time from Netflix engineers who had to spend time implementing an inferior product.

schiang··on TikTok wants to keep tracking iPhone users with state-backed workaround
How do you think they got to $2T market cap in the first place?
schiang··on TikTok wants to keep tracking iPhone users with state-backed workaround
China doesn't just provide supply chain anymore. They are also a huge market now because of its growing middle class. China has money to spend and US companies need to tap into that market.
schiang··on Show HN: DeepDiff 5 is Here: Delta, Deep Distance of any Python objects and more
Looks very useful. Thanks!
schiang··on Walmart Gets Into Health Care
It probably depends on the dentist. I've never even see a dental hygienist at my dentist's office. It's always the dentist that does everything.
schiang··on Walmart Gets Into Health Care
That's why some dental offices hire dental hygienist to clean teeth while the DDS focus on more major procedures.
schiang··on Is Facebook’s Massive Open Office Scaring Away Developers?
Team sized rooms are definitely the way to go. You can avoid conversation from other teams that you don't care about. When there is a conversation in the room, it's probably related to what you're doing so it's not necessarily distracting you.

I worked in a room with just my team and it worked out great. We were able to have discussions and draw stuff on white boards on the wall without distracting anyone else. It also helped with team bonding.

schiang··on LAX becomes largest U.S. airport to allow Uber, Lyft pickups
Also when you need change, all of a sudden they have $0 on them.
schiang··on LAX becomes largest U.S. airport to allow Uber, Lyft pickups
Taxi driver's attitude problems are the main reason why I wish uber would take over. I was in Vegas recently and got a taxi to take me ~0.8 miles. He was so sarcastic about how he was happy for me that it's such a short trip. I don't need any of that attitude when I hop in a a car. I have almost always had pleasant conversations with my uber drivers. Customer service is so important and it seems like uber got it right.
schiang··on LA Dodgers Accelerator
This is really big for developing sports related startups. Most sports related startups are doing fantasy. I'd love to see what comes out of this accelerator.
schiang··on Steve Ballmer to Sign $2 Billion Deal to Buy L.A. Clippers Basketball Team
Purchasing the clippers will not decrease his net worth. Owning a major sports franchise especially one in a major market will always be profitable. You're guaranteed to turn a profit every single year. Gate tickets, TV contracts, merchandise, and profit sharing are all very good revenue source for a sports team. He also doesn't have to pay money to build a new arena because Clippers just pay rent to play at Staples Center.

Sports is one of the few businesses that will thrive under any economic condition. There will always be fans that shell out money to watch their team.

schiang··on Ask HN: How to tell your friend his idea sucks
You don't have to tell him his idea sucks. Just go over the process of what he will have to do in order to succeed. Maybe once he understands the grind of starting a successful business, he will realize how much work and effort it really takes to start a startup.
schiang··on Mt. Gox to Open Call Center for Disappearing Bitcoin Questions
I think Mt. Gox is doing this just so they can say they tried to help the customers. But at the end of the day, this call center won't really help much with helping people retrieving their bitcoins.
schiang··on Always get the bigger pizza
A lot of companies use this strategy. For example 24 hour fitness in my area offers a 3 year membership for ~$600 as opposed to paying $24/month. I was happy with my decision to pay monthly because I was able to switch to a new gym a year later.

Buying the bigger pizza only makes sense if you know you or someone else can finish it. If you buy a bigger pizza and don't finish eating it, you end up wasting money.

schiang··on Snapchat - GibSec Full Disclosure
I read somewhere that snapchat is thinking about allowing users to replay 1 photo/video per day. They're pretty much telling everyone that they're storing these pics/videos with that feature.
schiang··on Graph databases and Python

This is a good book for a quick intro to graph dbs for anyone interested.

schiang··on What does the logo of Toyota imply?
wow that's pretty clever
schiang··on Ask HN: How much industry experience before attempting a startup?
I don't think there's a minimum. There's plenty of startups that were started by college students or even younger. As long as you're smart and know where you want to take your startup, you can succeed.
schiang··on Ask HN: How do you apply for a tech job?
You should definitely focus on solid side projects. You don't have any prior experience as a developer so the only way to prove to someone that you can code is to show them.
schiang··on Ask HN: What do you do for activities outside of work?
a lot of sports
schiang··on Video on Instagram
I just downloaded the app. Videos don't play automatically. You have to click the 'play' button. Doesn't look like it repeats once you play either.
schiang··on Video on Instagram
I think this will take over Vine. People are already on Instagram for photos but now they won't have to open up another app for videos.
schiang··on Edward Snowden: the whistleblower behind revelations of NSA surveillance
If the US govt decides to prosecute Edward Snowden, doesn't that basically confirm every single accusation is true? So far there's been a lot of denials from all parties involved. The govt is in a tough position.
schiang··on Ask HN: Am I committing career suicide?
I think you should go for it.

I'm currently in a similar situation. I started learning how to program about a year ago and even got a job at a startup. I really want to learn iOS dev because just being a RoR dev will limit my career path real soon. I quit my job a few weeks ago and have been spending all my time learning iOS dev. My goal is to find another job after I'm comfortable with iOS.

schiang··on The Trouble with CodeSchool
There's always 2 sides to this argument. CS grads will say codeschool grads don't know enough CS fundamentals. On the other hand non-CS grads will say CS grads only know CS theory and don't actually know how to build products.
schiang··on Ask HN: Best alternative to Heroku?
If you want a very simple solution, check out AWS Elastic Beanstalk. It's really easy to setup and you just need 1 simple command to deploy (git aws.push). Not sure how big your app is but they give you 1 year free of a micro instance too.
schiang··on Google Fiber announced for Provo, Utah
I can't wait to cancel my TWC internet. I'm paying $58/mth for a 20mbps plan but the max speed I can get is ~11-12 mbps. Can't wait for google fiber to come so I can dump TWC.
