schemathings··on Moog dancers prove that TV was more adventurous in the 70s
My initial reaction when I saw the video was 'Alwin Nikolais' - he's really considered to be the choreographer who first integrated multimedia into dance. e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KFpcO0f89E (edit - forgot an S on his name and posted a better video)
schemathings··on Hilary Mantel, Historian
I don't recall that they specifically say it in the credits, but this movie about the French Revolution follows Place of Greater Safety quite closely - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098238/ in the sense that the story follows the ties between Camille Desmoulin/Robespierre as schoolkids through to the friendship with Danton etc .. if you like / have read Safety you'll appreciate the movie probably.
schemathings··on Want cleaner code? Use the rule of six
For the example in the text I'd typically just include a one line comment above to show what an example string would look like and leave the code as is

schemathings··on The “bicameral mind” 30 years on (2007)
People generally mention Snowcrash when Bicameral Mind is mentioned, for a good reason - they explore bicameralism in humans and computers. Not usually mentioned is China Mieville who wrote Embassytown where an alien species with literally two heads that speak independently in similes evolve to use metaphor.
schemathings··on Did the early medieval era ever take place?
Reminds me of the F Scott Fitzgerald story - The Diamond as Big as the Ritz except instead of 3 centuries hiding, it's 5 acres with a big diamond :)

schemathings··on LinkedDataHub: The Knowledge Graph Notebook
Bummer, the demo app at https://kg.opendatahub.bz.it/ seems to be broken. The concept sounds like something I could use.
schemathings··on Audiobookshelf: Self-hosted audiobook and podcast server
Looks fantastic, will give it a try. One thing I like with SmartAudioBookPlayer on Android is for the sleep timer you can have it give a light chime and then a fadeout period - if you want to extend it you just slap/shake the phone enough to have the gyro or whatever detect motion so you don't need to open your eyes and have the light wake you back up to whatever extent. I didn't see that in the app feature list but it may be there, looks like everything else I like already is. Oh, assuming it lets you listen 'offline' with a local copy :)
schemathings··on Launch HN: Optery (YC W22) – Remove your personal info from the internet
It's funny I parsed the dummy name "Notareal Personxxx" as 'Notary-something' and thought maybe this was some type of legal proxy account.
schemathings··on Freshmeat.net, 1997-2014 (2014)
I gave a talk on the use of freeware for non-profits - I titled it tongue in cheek Freshmeat for Vegetarians.
schemathings··on True crime channel “JCS – Criminal Psychology” quits YouTube over censorship
There's a fair bit of content at https://archive.org/details/jcs-criminal-psychology_202108

https://www.reddit.com/r/jimcantswim/wiki/index/episode-dire... seems to be a complete listing of available content.

Edit - after looking at the wiki page it seems a lot of the YouTube links are already taken down or made private.

schemathings··on Interactive piano reference to major and minor scales
Very cool - I think a nice addition would be to add some common chord progressions, e.g. https://takelessons.com/blog/piano-chord-progressions-z06 as an option at in each scale section. Would help people learning to do transpositions if you persist that option - also an option to invert the chords.
schemathings··on Ask HN: How to learn about text editor architectures and implementations?
'Challenging projects every programmer should try' - first example is a text editor with some pointers to some data structures to consider, some design patterns to use, and a few links to other resources. https://austinhenley.com/blog/challengingprojects.html
schemathings··on Kodi: An Open Source Home Theater System
That's good to hear!
schemathings··on Kodi: An Open Source Home Theater System
Interesting - I bought Emby this year for serving local media - my one gripe is no thumbnails/preview when you scrub over the timeline - this one has it. Will give it a spin.
schemathings··on When We Were Kings
Great documentary/film!

Pairs well with Ken Burns' Ali https://www.pbs.org/kenburns/muhammad-ali/

schemathings··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to exploring the internet?
The Scout Report has been around almost as long as the Web - I visit it occasionally for new inspiration https://scout.wisc.edu/report/current
schemathings··on Forget Twitter Threads; Write a Blog Post Instead
I regularly use my browser plugin 'Display Anchors' to get the URL to direct people to the exact part of a page I'm referencing.
schemathings··on Daniel Defoe's 1705 Fantasy about Chinese Mapmakers on the Moon (2018) [pdf]
The description of the living maps reminds me of the movie Prospero's Books - a wild adaptation of The Tempest.
schemathings··on AWS S3? Cloudflare R2? We think we know what's coming next
Not anymore!
schemathings··on AWS S3? Cloudflare R2? We think we know what's coming next
Well logically it's P1 next, right? An AI that takes over the world? https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1414021.The_Adolescence_...
schemathings··on Build you own SGI Indy workstation with MAME
Had many of those over the years - all I have left is the mouse pad :)
schemathings··on Ask HN: DNS Outage?
Probably related - carriers are reporting AS701 BGP issues with Verizon at Equinix NY2 datacenter.
schemathings··on Akamai Edge DNS was down
Possibly related .. Verizon peering issues / ASN701 at Equinix NY2 in Secaucus NJ
schemathings··on The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind (1976)
I'd highly recommend Embassytown. The interpreter has to deal with a species that has two heads that communicate seemingly independently - bicameral mind indeed!
schemathings··on The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind (1976)
As mentioned below/above .. Snowcrash by Stephenson uses the concepts of the bicameral mind heavily (he mentions it in the opening acknowledgements), and China Miéville has a novel called Embassytown https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embassytown that doesn't cite that work specifically but feels like a similar exploration along with understandings of simile vs metaphor in the development of language/consciousness.
schemathings··on Show HN: Spoonie – a Chrome extension to spoonerize any website
Funny, I just emailed a link to a Smithsonian article about the Russian Revolution and switched Palace Coup to Callous Poo. Silly fun.
schemathings··on The Death of the Festival
When I returned from my first burn I described it to friends as a carnival where everyone brings their own ride, and bonus points if its something ridiculous you imagined when you were a kid at your first carnival (a fire-breathing octopus for example)
schemathings··on Vim Modes Transition Diagram
I recently had the happy discovery that q: puts you into the : buffer, which is your command history. You can navigate to a recent comment and just enter to execute. Bonus point for it being the opposite of :q
schemathings··on The Art of Making Debts: Accounting for an Obsession in 19th-Century France
I'm surprised there's no mention of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Necker in the story .. "remembered today for taking the unprecedented step in 1781 of making public the country’s budget .."
schemathings··on Restaurant menu tricks (2020)
Funny, Eleven Madison Park's chef was the subject of NPR's How I Built This last week https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510313/how-i-built-this .. May 3 episode.
