I'm reminded of the fictional book quoted in Bierce's "Devil's Dictionary" entitled "The Lunarian Astonished" or the like, and I always thought it would be great to pursue the theme further. Defoe isn't Bierce but now I'm interested in his take as well.

The description of the living maps reminds me of the movie Prospero's Books - a wild adaptation of The Tempest.
