scarby2··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
there really needs to be a configurable rules/decisions engine. I.e. i would prefer to walk everywhere, i will take public transit if it saves me more than 15 minutes total or 5 minutes per leg, evaluate this at every interchange node.

There are some routings in london for example where the best course of action is actually to take a train, get off walk 5 minutes then take a different train, google will always tell you to stay on the train to a point where you can change trains in the same station.

The reason we have licencing for barbers is that existing barbers wanted it and persued regulatory solutions to protect their market.

Existing police officers do not want this.

scarby2··on Trade Dollars with other startups. Book it as revenue
On a corporate level it doesn't really matter as you're only taxed on your profits/losses. If we do a service swap ultimately it's just adding a revenue item with a matching loss, and these are infact quantified.

As an individual interestingly it does matter because services received for free are considered taxable income (but businesses are not taxed on their income).

scarby2··on Trade Dollars with other startups. Book it as revenue
This isn't a good take.

> If you do the work but undervalue it, it's likely tax fraud.

A company can value it's services as it chooses. If the work is performed for $1 or $5000 the government doesn't get a say in that.

> you do the work but overvalue it, it's likely investor fraud.

Quite possibly. Assuming this was done with the intention of misrepresenting your revenue and gaining investment.

>The vendor may have been chosen not by merit, but by its willingness to accept an exchange of services. Saying you have $X in revenue implies you won that revenue by merit.

Vendors are chosen all the time because of their willingness to accept specific payment terms and a whole bunch of non-merit pipelines via family, via golf course deals etc.

> I don't know any Europeans who'd prefer to have American healthcare.

Selfishly I think my American healthcare is better than anything I ever had in the UK. I can see a doctor within 2 weeks even a specialist, I can actually get a sleep study, my doctor will actually listen to me rather than tell me I'm just getting old, go home and take an ibuprofen.

scarby2··on Ultrasonic Chef's Knife
I'd take issue with your price point but agree with the sentiment

I've seen victorinox fibrox knives in Michelin Star kitchens, they get the job done and are very reasonably priced ($60 for a chef's knife).

Admittedly the knives I have at home are significantly more expensive largely because the knives I have at home are on display so I want something that looks good and I actually enjoy using them.

On one level it's a little silly but then on another level people spend thousands on art/sculptures which has no useful purpose.

> There's no substitute for experience here. It's also a very transferable skill so it's one that used to be taught in schools but no longer is.

This 100% should be taught in school, it would have been one of the most useful things I could have learned.

scarby2··on “No Tax on Tips” Includes Digital Creators, Too
I never tip before receiving the service. Always hit zero. It feels a bit weird to begin with but you get used to it and i've not been treated any differently. A tip is generally not required for coffee or to-go/counter service.

scarby2··on “No Tax on Tips” Includes Digital Creators, Too
> In America, at least in restaurants, employers are allowed to pay a lower minimum wage to tipped employees. So tips are an essential part of a servers compensation and should not be considered optional.

This actually varies state by state. In Alaska, California, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington the minimum wage does not change tipped vs non-tipped. Also in other states if the pay after tips do not meet the state minimum wage the employer is required to make up this difference.

If you actually look at the data tipped employees make significantly more vs median income in countries with tipping than without.

> If you can't afford that, then you can't afford to eat out, choose a different option.

I think this works if we're talking about a full restaurant, If we're talking about a mostly empty restaurant then even a 5% tip is money that the server would have not otherwise had, pretty certain they'd choose more money over less.

i suppose we have come to expect 4 states: - off: no power, no activity - hibernate: no power, no activity session state saved to non-volatile storage - sleep: Minimal power, RAM remains powered with the session state, can be resumed quickly - on

now we essentially have sleep++ and no option to set it back to vanilla sleep.

> Thier max output is only 9.6kW so it can’t do a whole home backup and the car can only run in backup mode when the grid is out.

9.6kW should be enough to backup your entire house, that's 87A... Lots of people only have a 100A supply in general. Depending on your setup you may have to limit what you use at one time but even in a large house that will be more than enough for AC, lights and electronic devices.

This clearly depends on your role and industry. I can write code in a bunch of industries I've actually never had 2 jobs in the same industry. If I were an oil pipeline engineer it would be different.

scarby2··on I'm starting a social club to solve the male loneliness epidemic
It's broadly true though. It doesn't apply to all of us but as a group it's a thing.

Personally it's not for me, I'm a heterosexual male but I get on far better with women and find men's spaces intimidating.

Their success in some way is tied to trump right now. Nobody else seems to captivate his base in the same way, and they've made most of this about a man and less about a movement. So it's entirely possible this dies when he does.

genocide is an intentional act. Smallpox did 90% of the work and nobody lifted a finger, at the time nobody could have forseen the effect of smallpox on the native population.

After smallpox when the population of the Americas had been reduced by something like 90% they most certainly didn't need all the land.

post-war reconstruction fervor can inspire wealth creation. This is largely because there are no NIMBYs and eco-warriros sat around saying that the returning troops cant have a place to live and we cant have new infrastructure. If we can get that reconstruction fervor without a war it would solve a lot of our problems.

I have a similar sample, all middle class in their 30's. The only ones who have bought houses have been given significant assistance from their parents, now none of them are poor by any stretch, but few have any significant assets.

I was reading the first part of your response and my mind was immediately going "but sous-vide is everywhere" It's one of those things that's just really useful. However it has fallen off slightly, i didn't think anyone is cooking eggs sous vide anymore.

It is a factor though. Most people will commit non-violent crime for a big enough pay off. Especially one where the individuals effected are hard to identify.

If my bug bounty is $10,000 and I can sell it for $20,000 then most people will take the legitimate cash. If it's $10,000 and some black market trader will pay $10,000,000 (obviously exaggerating) then there's a whole mess of people are going to take the ten million.

scarby2··on Why Northern England is poor
Specific to London but there were a lot of working class home owners who bought under the right to buy schenlme who have benefited hugely from gentrification (not just from increased home prices but from lower crime, better schools etc).

Also a lot of non-market housing being rented, all those people also benefit.
