sbolt··on Ask HN: Advice for someone entering their 30s
Thank you for sharing Obituary for a Quiet Life, it’s a beautiful piece.
sbolt··on Ask HN: How did you learn Regex?
I spent half a day playing with https://regexone.com and got the fundamentals in place, after that it’s been practice in solving tasks at work. Rubular is awesome if you’re looking to test out a pattern
sbolt··on Ask HN: Favorite Home Office Purchase?
I don't think it will work for a monitor like that due to the rounded webcam, it needs a flat surface to clamp to. I think it would work with the more integrated style of webcam monitor like the LG 27MD5KL-B.

For my setup I have an external webcam sitting on top of the light bar.

sbolt··on Ask HN: Favorite Home Office Purchase?
I bought a BenQ desk lamp that sits on my monitor a few years back and have loved it since. Lights up my whole desk evenly and is out of the way. https://www.benq.com/en-us/lighting/monitor-light/screenbar-...
sbolt··on Ask HN: How do you structure your shared finances with your spouse/partner
Thank you for the thoughtful reply.

Paying the large, important items first is a great idea. I like the idea of having some discretionary money that can be spent guilt-free as the main things are covered.

Thanks for your reply!

Yes we are planning to have a family at some point. We make similar levels of income and are both pretty thrifty. I would say we’re very aligned on our goals and habits in this regard but we’re figuring out the best way to structure things.

Thank you. The vaults idea is cool, it would be nice to have some discretionary money for small personal projects.

I am in a similar position with a priority date of June 2022 and have been current sin Jan 1. I would love to hear Peter's advice here. The endless checking of the application status is tough.

Hi Peter, thanks for your continued presence on HN over the years!

What wait times are you seeing for I-485 processing of EB-3 green cards? Are the interviews still being skipped?

sbolt··on Ask HN: What companies have blown you away with their customer support?
Eight Sleep - my topper leaked and damaged my mattress, I was not happy to say the least. I filled out an online form, got a response in minutes via email and after confirming my details they organized a replacement of both free of charge despite being out of warranty.

All good, and thank you for the feedback!

Sean here, author and EM of the recon team at Modern Treasury. I completely agree, we us AI to surface suggestions to users during manual review so there's full transparency and human confirmation at every step. Our automatic recon doesn't use LLMs for the reasons you outlined.
sbolt··on Ask HN: Where do you buy your coffee beans?
Thanks for chiming in! How do you make your coffee?
sbolt··on Ask HN: Where do you buy your coffee beans?
Thanks for the detail on your experience. I have a semi-automatic Breville and love it but I see where you’re coming from. At the end of the day it’s about finding the method that works for you. The Jura sounds like an awesome choice for my parents who like you don’t want the hassle of the manual espresso.

I know some folks who love Folgers made in a coffee pot. It wouldn’t be my first choice but it shouldn’t be compared to single origin espresso, it’s just a different drink with its own pros and cons.

Is this similar to https://bonterms.com/?
sbolt··on Ask HN: How Safe Is ACH?
I agree that there are quirks of the ACH system. Thankfully banks are very risk averse and do thorough vetting before allowing merchants to initiate debits. As a consumer you have a 60 day window to initiate a return, this can be done by reaching out to your bank. Returns are a first class entry in the ACH world, so much so that they are the reason a lot of merchants don’t like ACH.
sbolt··on Ask HN: Car Lease or Finance?
I recently finished my lease from ford and found it to be decent from a cost perspective, primarily because I am foreign (no loan history) and financing rates were very high at the time. I bought the car outright at lease end for the agreed amount (residual value), I could have easily handed it back and walked away. This level of optionality is awesome imo. Be careful however, the financing terms of a lease agreements can be difficult to digest and some companies like Tesla do not allow you to purchase at the end [1]

sbolt··on Ask HN: How do you store cables?
My bad, I just grabbed them from the SiteStripe out of habit, links are removed
sbolt··on Ask HN: How do you store cables?
I use velcro cable ties to keep each cable in a tidy loop. I then put the cables in large slider lock bags depending on their category (charging, data, misc). It's also good to donate duplicates, most cables are cheap to purchase so keeping multiple of any one type isn't worth it.
