sbelskie··on U.S. State Department phones hacked with Israeli company spyware
Were there immediate press conferences or sanctions for the Solarwinds stuff? Honest question. I don’t remember.
sbelskie··on .NET 6 vs .NET 5 speedup
Not sure if it is still the case, but it used to be that First did a fairly naive foreach over the IEnumerable while Where has several collection specific type checks that allow it to use MoveNext and maybe other more efficient ways to traverse the collection.
sbelskie··on US inflation jumps to 31-year high amid global supply chain crisis
Home values are “included” in the form of rental equivalence, which is widely considered to address a number of flaws with just including house value. And contrary to popular belief, from 1983 when the switch was made until 2007, rental equivalence actually increased CPI compared to the old method.

Why would equities be included in inflation? That doesn’t make sense to me.

sbelskie··on .NET 6 Released
> Can .NET deploy a static binary nowadays?

You can bundle everything in a single file but that file contains the runtime, so even small Hello World apps are 50MB+ last I checked, though there have been some improvements recently with trimming and AOT is hopefully coming next year with .NET 7.

sbelskie··on Welcome to C# 10
This is what I’ve settled on. Implicit usings for the SDK are great but otherwise I don’t want this in any code base I work on.
sbelskie··on Welcome to C# 10
The most interesting feature here (though included only as a preview) is static abstract members on interfaces, which will make things like generic math possible.
sbelskie··on IRS announces 401(k) limit increases to $20,500
This is potentially being eliminated (under some circumstances) by the current reconciliation bill.
sbelskie··on IRS announces 401(k) limit increases to $20,500
Do you have a better one you use instead to gauge inflation?
sbelskie··on Sex Differences in Adolescents’ Occupational Aspirations
I’m not sure he assuming some “fixed cost” so much as pointing out (or at least arguing) that such a model explains the data as well the “just so” conclusion. Additionally, he is suggesting that such a model, in which agents respond to incentives rather than just have “true” preferences is stronger.
sbelskie··on Sex Differences in Adolescents’ Occupational Aspirations
“ We found that the latter correlations are mostly due to an increase in boys’ aspirations to enter things-oriented blue-collar careers and a decrease in boys' aspirations to enter people-oriented careers in countries with greater women's empowerment. In contrast, the percentages of girls aspiring to things-oriented jobs or people-oriented jobs did not systematically vary with national-levels of girls' and women's empowerment.”

Interesting thread by Matt Darling of Niskansen that is pretty critical of the study design and data quality of this and other similar papers.

sbelskie··on .NET Hot Reload Support via CLI
The reason why I feel somewhat encouraged is because my understanding is that this exact group of people fighting to keep this in is why it was reverted. I have no idea who knew what when or how anyone would have reacted without public scrutiny but David Fowler has been hyping hot reload since at least May on Twitter and it seems obvious to me that he and many other team members were 100% behind the planned dotnet watch hot reload approach. Maybe public outcry gave them the ammunition to fight this fight, and I may be naive, but I have a hard time thinking that at least some of that group wasn’t against this decision from the beginning (though who knows if they even learned about it much in advance of it being public).
sbelskie··on .NET Hot Reload Support via CLI
I may have done a bad job articulating what I meant. My main point was that I feel (based on like 2nd and 3rd knowledge so could be totally wrong) that this had as much to do with public pressure as it did with a number of well known (and certainly many not well known) dotnet and Microsoft team members who fought for an OSS feature that they had been developing and promoting for most of this year.
sbelskie··on .NET Hot Reload Support via CLI
Pretty encouraging sign given the drama the last few days. In addition to the community response, it’s pretty clear that a number of dotnet and MSFT team members went to bat hard for this. Really happy to see that they won out.
sbelskie··on What’s New in F# 6
Really happy to see the task improvements. Simpler and more performant. Can’t beat that when improving interop with .NET.
sbelskie··on Fable is a compiler that brings F# into the JavaScript ecosystem
Tooling for sure. I would be shocked in the marketing budget increased just based on how many recent .NET changes recently exclude F# (e.g. source generators).

For those interested in Svetle, Sutil is another thing to check out. Top of my head I can’t remember if it is based on or just inspired by Feliz.

sbelskie··on Fable is a compiler that brings F# into the JavaScript ecosystem
I’ve only played around with it on a few smaller projects, but it blew me away with the simplicity and expressiveness. I’ve used it a few times to make simple web based UIs for personal tooling and am looking forward to using it on something bigger.

Just one of the many reasons I find myself more and more excited by F#.

sbelskie··on It costs $438k to jail one person for one year at Rikers Island
The spike in homicide rates 100% began during the previous administration. I think that’s more happenstance than due to any particular policy decisions, but murder rates starting spiking in the summer of 2020.
sbelskie··on OSHA to require employers with 100 employees vaccinate or test workforce
“The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) database contains information on *unverified* reports of adverse events (illnesses, health problems and/or symptoms) following immunization with US-licensed vaccines. *Reports are accepted from anyone*…”
sbelskie··on This Is Water (2005)
End of Tour is enjoyable and most of the words are his own, but there is a clear need to make it a story about a guy who later commits suicide, and so all the acting and tonal stuff is inflected to that end. Having read the book first, the movie just seemed so much sadder and devoid of a lot of the joy that made the book so incredible.
sbelskie··on My Tungsten Cube (2019)
You can easily shatter it with a vice grip or locking wrench, and with the rise of tungsten wedding bands EMTs and hospitals are more and more equipped for this.
sbelskie··on Golang vs. C# (.NET 5.0) at Benchmarks Game
dotnet publish -r linux-x64

Seems pretty simple. Though the binary size is definitely not on par with go.

sbelskie··on Performance Improvements in .NET 6
IIRC correctly, you may run into service scope issues if you just use a Mongo collection as an IQueryable directly, but there is a first class integration for Mongo from Chillicream: https://chillicream.com/docs/hotchocolate/integrations/mongo...
sbelskie··on The death of the ‘Millionaire Next Door’ dream
That’s not what inflation is.
sbelskie··on Are Good Ideas Getting Harder to Find?
That sounds exactly like good ideas are getting harder to find.
sbelskie··on Are Good Ideas Getting Harder to Find?
I think the article is less about “have we reached a ceiling?” than “are costs to raise it increasing exponentially?.
sbelskie··on Where has all the productivity gone?
The economy is growing slower as are living standards(at least in the US post 1973 or so) because productivity growth has been slower. Both are obviously advancing, but more slowly.
sbelskie··on Handling 100 Requests per Second with Python and Django
> A few months after rolling things out to production we encountered some issues with AppService.

I’d be curious to hear more about this. Was is just degraded performance or something else?
