sbelskie··on Making Elizabethan plays understandable and fun to read
“ Indeed, the irony today is that the Russians, the French and other people in foreign countries possess Shakespeare to a much greater extent than we do, for the simple reason that unlike us, they get to enjoy Shakespeare in the language they speak."

I think the more radical argument and the one closer to the truth (but not the whole truth) is that these countries possess nothing of Shakespeare, for the simple reason that they, unlike us, have never read him.

sbelskie··on Student uses black soldier flies to grow pea plants in simulated Martian soil
That avoids the worst ambiguity but you still might be helping Uncle Jack murder a horse.
sbelskie··on Student uses black soldier flies to grow pea plants in simulated Martian soil
I think it’s pretty unambiguously a verb in that case. That kind of comma is very commonly used in literary prose and essentially always is an “and” like conjunction that joins multiple actions together.
sbelskie··on Why don't we know how antidepressants work yet?
Extra strength Tylenol in the US is sold in 500mg tabs with instructions to take 2 pills as needed every 6 hours.
sbelskie··on Etsy: Company escaping 'race to the bottom', getting back to its artisan roots
Not even being glib but how could any product not fall into one of those 4 categories?
sbelskie··on Almost 50% would refuse job offer with no remote work option – survey
Yes. I actually think the Irish thing is less misleading then the fact that the headline implies some certainty about what are obviously just claims that may or may not be related to the decisions jobseekers would actually make when presented with an offer.
sbelskie··on Almost 50% would refuse job offer with no remote work option – survey
The title here is pretty misleading.

What the article actually says is that nearly half of Irish jobseekers claim they would refuse a job offer with no remote option.

sbelskie··on General Availability of .NET Aspire: Simplifying .NET Cloud-Native Development
I don’t see anything about Aspire being Azure only. The docs specifically call out that it’s cloud agnostic, though Azure specific support appears to be a first class citizen.

How is a drug that reduces appetite and eating not solving the root cause of obesity?

sbelskie··on Lolita: A tagless, dependently typed, self-aware programming language
> Couple of inches taller. Pink-rimmed glasses. New, heaped-up hairdo, new ears. How simple! The moment, the death that I had kept conjuring up for three years was as simple as a bit of dry wood.

This is on the language FAQ. If memory serves this is the scene where Humbert has tracked down Dolores later in life and is contemplating murdering the now pregnant girl who he earlier sexually abused. What the actual hell? If this is supposed to be a joke it’s in decidedly poor taste. And that’s the best case.

sbelskie··on Daily coffee consumption at 20-year high
FWIW this defines coffee consumption as percentage of people who report having consumed coffee within the last day. I would have assumed by the headline it was talking about total or even per capita consumption.

This was it interesting though:

> NCA’s Spring 2024 National Coffee Data Trends (NCDT) report reveals that 67% of American adults had coffee in the past day (more than any other beverage, including tap or bottled water)

sbelskie··on How I replaced deadly garage door torsion springs (2002)
How is it age related if it is the number one cause for all ages? Am I misreading the chart?
sbelskie··on Moderna's mRNA cancer vaccine works better than thought
This does not appear to be a preventative treatment. It treats existing melanoma by inducing the body to produce antibodies against it, no?
sbelskie··on Moderna Melanoma Vaccine Cuts Death Rate in Half
“The vaccine is custom-built based on an analysis of a patient's tumors after surgical removal. The vaccines are designed to train the immune system to recognize and attack specific mutations in cancer cells.”

Looks like their is a level of personalization going on that requires actual existing cancer.

sbelskie··on ‘Mini-bombs’ blowing up the elbows of baseball’s top pitchers
It is new and was introduced this season.
sbelskie··on Why has a useless cold medication been allowed on shelves for years?
I get the expense and tracking argument but not the stockpiling one. You can buy 3.6 grams in a day and 9 grams per month. Are there stricter state level laws or pharmacy policies that I’m unaware of? 9 grams is like 75 120mg 12-hour pills. How much pseudoephedrine are people using?
sbelskie··on Why has a useless cold medication been allowed on shelves for years?
This is the same in the US.
sbelskie··on The combined power of F# and C#
FWIW, this a switch expression rather than a switch statement.

But in any case I really love this addition to the language but the inability to have multi-line or block expression arms is a constant annoyance for me.

You can even combine these with the new one line record syntax to create a poor man’s discriminated union.

sbelskie··on Psychedelic scientist sends brains back to childhood
Can you expand on this? I find it hard to understand what similarities you see to what children today are being “exposed” to and Charles Manson drugging people with LSD and convincing them to kill other people.
sbelskie··on Legend of Zelda game sells 10M copies in three days
What is sad about having a 6 year old console that just had a title sell 10 million copies in 3 days?
sbelskie··on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release

sbelskie··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
Reading the article is always an option.

> Rather, Lee and Momeni were portrayed by police as being familiar with one another. In the wee hours of April 4, they were purportedly driving together through downtown San Francisco in a car registered to the suspect.

sbelskie··on New Orleans teenagers found a new proof of the Pythagorean Theorem
Ahh, the tuition was cut off on mobile and did not realize there was horizontal scroll.
sbelskie··on New Orleans teenagers found a new proof of the Pythagorean Theorem
Are new articles about people’s accomplishments “remiss” for not including statements about how much their parents cared about them?
sbelskie··on New Orleans teenagers found a new proof of the Pythagorean Theorem
Perhaps the website for the school is incomplete and only listing registration fees and not tuition but the only figure I see is $750, which is not nothing for plenty of families but is hardly what I would call expensive when it comes to private education. Am I missing something? Very well could be!
sbelskie··on 60M Americans have taxes so simple the IRS could do them automatically
“Already” feels like it’s doing a lot of the work there. The budget had been decreasing for most (the entirety?) of the last decade and only recently was increased:

https://www.cbpp.org/research/federal-tax/the-need-to-rebuil...

But overall, I agree that way too much of federal policy is doled out as tax credits/deductions/penalties or what have you, but there are other reasons for that, which for me have little bearing on whether the IRS should be properly funded enough to after the biggest tax cheats.

sbelskie··on 60M Americans have taxes so simple the IRS could do them automatically
Why is “chronically underfunded” in quotes?
sbelskie··on Ask HN: Do you think this is the start of the new financial crisis?
I don’t think hyperinflation and bank bailouts go together.

There’s plenty wrong with Reddit overall, but there are any number of niche indispensable subreddits that I would hate to lose.
