sbashyal··on Welcoming the Nepalese Government to Have I Been Pwned
Yes, this is the new government elected in March of this year after the old one was overthrown in September of last year.
sbashyal··on Ask HN: Has any of the Pivotal Tracker replacement attempts succeeded?
Project management is one of the use cases we plan on excelling at Proma.ai

We are launching in 2 weeks.

I would love give a demo to anyone interested. Email is in profile.

sbashyal··on Trucking's uneasy relationship with new tech
Shameless Plug: I am building Proma.ai and one of the use cases we are pursuing is trucking freight operations management. I would love to chat with others in this space - both builders and buyers.
sbashyal··on [dead]
We are working on this exact thing, would love to give you a demo and early access. My email is in profile.
sbashyal··on Ask HN: Modern day equivalent to HyperCard?
My son, around the same age, liked p5.js the most out of several things I introduced him to
sbashyal··on Show HN: A simple hand drawn HTML/CSS theme
This looks great and would be great for certain use case like a website for kids.
sbashyal··on AWS Amplify Studio: Figma design to full-stack apps
Not a whole lot based on our experience few months ago.
sbashyal··on Ask HN: How did Python become the lingua franca of ML/AI?
I have a historical perspective on this topic. Data Science popularity was rapidly growing and "R" was the lingua franca around 2010 - 2014.

I attended Strata conference in 2014 and after visiting various technology exhibition booths there, I saw a common theme: tech companies were building data solutions using Python as R was no good for the purpose

In a meeting scheduled to share my take-aways from the conference, I predicted "Python will emerge to be the language of DataScience in few years"

sbashyal··on Tell HN: Interviewed with Triplebyte? Your profile is about to become public
Talking about dark patterns, the email was sent after 5:00pm on a Friday before the long week-end.

Triplebyte team knew that their users were not going to like it and did their best to slip this through.

Triplebyte went from being a respectable company helping skilled hackers by-pass white-board interviews to being a prime example of unethical tech company in one stroke.

sbashyal··on Effect of economic crisis on America’s small businesses [slides]
I disagree that nothing one could have done beforehand could fix that. The argument is not that there would not be a decline in share prices at all but the magnitude of it.

You need to have enough saved to survive 6 months w/o income is preached a lot in personal finance and somehow this is not practiced for businesses. It is understandable that cash-strapped startups can't afford to do this but the companies buying back shares to increase their stock price certainly could.

sbashyal··on Show HN: Volument – A new take on website analytics
Love the product concept and the problem / solution descriptions. I am not your typical customer though as I was already aware of the limitations of existing solutions.

I just signed up for this and set it up in our website. I have a couple of questions: - Is the analytics realtime or does it take time to process events? - Is there minimum data threshold that is needed before anything shows up in the dashboard?

sbashyal··on Stripe Terminal – Programmable point of sale
We have developed a POS for salons and spa and have been working with various in-store payment solutions - including Square. None of the existing solutions meet our needs.

I have applied for an invite - can't wait to get access.

sbashyal··on Ask HN: Where to go for short term expertise?
Have you tried Clarity.fm?
sbashyal··on Show HN: Growthzilla – software and data science platform for salons and spa
We are bootstrapped startup growing slowly but steadily. Our platform is very effective in growing revenue for salons and spa using data we collect. We recently crossed 100 active accounts that includes some key clients. Looking for ideas to help us accelerate growth!
sbashyal··on Ask HN: Where can I find high-end stock images for a website?
Shameless plug: http://aiphotosearch.com
sbashyal··on RethinkDB joins the Linux Foundation: What Happens Next
Just donated! We have an app in production using Rethinkdb. This needs to live on!
sbashyal··on Ask HN: Where is AI/ML actually adding value at your company?
- We use a complex multivariate model to predict customer conversion and prioritize lead response - We use text analysis to improve content for effectiveness and conversion Among other things
sbashyal··on Ask HN: Can you try my web app beta and give me some feedback?
Good point! I am planning to add this description to the site as well.

There are two problems in stock photo search. First, there are multiple marketplaces with different inventory and price structures. So if you are looking for stock photos that are not very common, you need to go to multiple marketplaces, search and comb through the results. We solve this by using APIs from those marketplaces to bring results for your search so you do not need to go and repeat your search at multiple marketplaces.

This leads us to the second problem. You now have a lot of photos to comb through. This is where the AI comes in. You "like" few of the photos in the search result that are close to what you are looking for and the AI learns your preferences to bring the results that are similar to the ones you have liked.

sbashyal··on Ask HN: Can you try my web app beta and give me some feedback?
Glad that you liked it! Also, found and fixed the bug causing problems with repeat searches.
sbashyal··on Ask HN: Can you try my web app beta and give me some feedback?
Lets say you are looking for a stock photo of a dog to use in your landing page like this one: http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-110687501/stock-photo-dog-ab...

Google Image Search API does not let you search multiple Stock Photo providers for photos. We are using APIs from multiple vendors to fetch the stock photos.

Secondly, our AI is geared towards stock photos. You can start searching for "dog" in aiphotosearch.com, then like a couple of photos that are closest to the one you are looking for and then refine results. We train a model that "understands" what you liked vs discarded and uses that to bring more results.

sbashyal··on Ask HN: Can you try my web app beta and give me some feedback?
1. Fixed the title 2. Initial result is regular image search, you get results based on your keywords. From then onwards, you can like the photos you somewhat like and click Refine Results. The AI algorithm analyzes the photos you have liked vs. the others and brings results based on that. You are basically training your model on the fly. 3. Good observation on too many fonts, will work on it
sbashyal··on Ask HN: Can you try my web app beta and give me some feedback?
tldr; I solved a problem that I had. Would love to get HN community's feedback.

Appreciate your feedback. I have not launched the app yet, it is in private beta. This is a hackers community. I am looking for fellow hackers willing to go through the e-mail wall to try what I have built and provide feedback.

There are lots of stock photo searches. But this one uses AI. So what? I have been buying stock photos a lot these past year. Every time, I have spent a lot of time (and the time value of money) finding the photo that I like. If you value your time at $100 per hour, the real cost of the stock photo that took you 30 minutes to find is the stock photo cost + $50.

sbashyal··on Ask HN: Can you try my web app beta and give me some feedback?
Thank you for the feedback! Just removed the twitter handle field in the form. The email is just to send a private invitation - within a minute.
sbashyal··on Neural network spotted deep inside Samsung's Galaxy S7 silicon brain
I have a background in Machine Learning and it is my belief that the mind does use branch prediction. Take for example a scenario where you are climbing down a stair in your house. Your brain already predicts that you are about to land on the next step. Now if the step height was lowered than the usual, the prediction fails and you immediately focus back on the climbing-down process to see what has happened and prosecute whatever fall-back actions are needed to minimize disruption.
sbashyal··on Netflix Will Be the Exclusive US TV Home of Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar
I recently digitally rented Avengers: Age of Ultron on VidAngel. https://www.vidangel.com?vip=yvkbv6kw

I love the $1 SD or $2 HD rental VidAngel offers on latest DVD releases. Not sure how long this will last though.

sbashyal··on Google's Nest is disabling some of its customers' old smart-home devices
I think this is a little more tricker. When customers make buying decisions, there is "Nest, owned by Alphabet and not likely to be shut because they are broke" benefit that they get. When they fail to meet those expectations, it should and will certainly reflect on the trust for Alphabet. Mainly because of your argument: Alphabet has little control over the companies and one should stop expecting good treatment and product lifecycle just because it is under Alphabet umbrella.
sbashyal··on HN Office Hours with Jared Friedman and Trevor Blackwell
We started with selling to people in our network. Now we have some online ad campaigns, referral and just went to a trade show. We currently have 50 customers. Added 10 last month.
sbashyal··on HN Office Hours with Jared Friedman and Trevor Blackwell
Hi Trevor and Jared, thanks for doing this.

We have been working on http://growthzilla.com - a data driven growth solution for salons for a little more than a year now. We have paying customers since launch and have zero cancellations. Our customers love the product for 3 reasons (1) ease of use (2) effectiveness in driving growth and (3) customer service

The problem: we are growing slower than we would want. Is there anything you'd like to suggest?

sbashyal··on Google Login will be mandatory for Firebase accounts
I already have a Firebase account setup with my work email address. So you are implying that having a Google account is required for 2FA?
sbashyal··on Google Login will be mandatory for Firebase accounts
I really hope that the next generation of companies founded and run by people who grew up being on the other side will refrain from making this kind of decisions.
