savant_penguin··on Addressing AI’s energy cost
I'm sure these people will gladly put themselves in a position to decide which are valid uses for energy so they can enlighten us all with their wisdom

And those who don't obey should be intimidated into compliance. After all, this is a fight to save the planet and your casualty is a small price to pay

savant_penguin··on Great timing, supercomputer upgrade lead to successful forecast of eruption
"This takes an incredible amount of computing power previously unavailable to the volcanic forecasting community"

Could this workload be approximated with neural net models and ran on tpus?

savant_penguin··on Profiles of people living in homeless encampments, rarely what you’d expect
Even if you only meet 7/day or 50 in a week that's 1-0.99^50 ≈ 0.4

Forty percent chance of a dangerous encounter/week is too much imho

savant_penguin··on Why does this code execute more slowly after strength-reducing multiplications?
What would be the difference in power consumption from each method? (Would it be always better to multiply? If so why not multiply by one?)
savant_penguin··on MasterCard to launch biometric checkout tool for retailers
The idea is that even if someone points a gun at you they can't do anything to you immediately if you don't have a phone or a credit card with you (as far as I know anyway). But with biometrics no matter what precautions you take, you'll always be in a position to give people your stuff by force
savant_penguin··on Millions of electric cars are coming. What happens to all the dead batteries?
One thing I wonder is what happens to the value is the car when most of its cost come from the batteries and they die
savant_penguin··on MasterCard to launch biometric checkout tool for retailers
There will be no situation in which a mugger could get something from you

Don't have your card/phone on you? No worries! We can still force your hand to withdraw money

savant_penguin··on KDE Connect Now Available on iOS
Does it/will it support Bluetooth?

As is usually happens, the places I generally need kde connect are the ones with the worst internet connectivity

savant_penguin··on Transfusion of brain fluid from young mice improves memory in old mice
Funnily enough, some people volunteered to test/develop (I don't recall which) the COVID vaccine but were turned down
savant_penguin··on ‘I’m not a leak.’ Scientific careers aren’t a ‘pipeline,’: economists
I'd guess that's a proxy for how applicable is your field of study outside academia
savant_penguin··on The semiconductor bust – still coming?
Switches and raspberries got really hard to find for a while too
savant_penguin··on The death rate for children has dropped dramatically
"Yet there's cause for alarm"

I find these claims actually dangerous

We risk disrupting what has consistently been a downard trend by acting on some arbitrary definition of "cause of alarm".

Teenage pregnancy after the 1960's is one example of that

savant_penguin··on The Machine Learning Job Market
Would you kindly tell what types of projects are such nice successes?
savant_penguin··on HackerRank (YC S11) DMCA'ed the SymPy Docs [fixed]
"This repository is currently disabled due to a DMCA takedown _notice_."

This is a disgrace How can something be taken down by nothing more than a notice?

What if the next one isn't as big as a project as sympy?

DMCA requests are absolutely broken

savant_penguin··on Amazon adds 5% ‘fuel and inflation surcharge’ to seller fees
Funny how businesses weren't greedy a few weeks ago, and just after inflation kicks in they all become greedy. It's all about greed and nothing to do with money printing
savant_penguin··on A modern self-referential weight matrix that learns to modify itself
Just skimmed the paper but the benchmarks are super weird
savant_penguin··on Trapped in lockdown, Shanghai residents turn to WeChat groups for food
You are missing the point.

During the holodomor hunger the government forbid getting food food even if your produced it yourself.

If you went into the fields after harvesting and tried getting anything that felt on the ground because you and your family were starving you were put to death.

Producing the food yourself makes no difference if the government takes it from you

savant_penguin··on Trapped in lockdown, Shanghai residents turn to WeChat groups for food
If anything it shows the fragility of having someone point a gun into your head forbidding you to go get food

If for whatever other reason you'd live in a remote area and the government used force to stop you from getting food in whatever way, the exact same thing would happen, as it already did in Ukraine (holodomor hunger) where you have one of the most fertile grounds on the planet

savant_penguin··on A basic introduction to NumPy's einsum
Iirc pytorch's einsum used to be very slow
savant_penguin··on Ask HN: How to deal with developers that go much faster than others?
What is the specific problem you are trying to fix?
savant_penguin··on Tell HN: My kid's school installed spyware and I can't remove it
I'm curious on how they enforce that
savant_penguin··on Meta's A.I. exodus: Top talent quits as lab tries to keep pace with rivals
Pretty please don't kill pytorch

Thanks

savant_penguin··on Finding Waldo in π
I read this but I'm not sure how it's done. Does he run an optimization step to select the palette that minimizes the error?

In that case I'd be cool to know the probability in finding a close enough image in that optimized space

savant_penguin··on Google terminated our Developer Account, says it is “associated”
I'm really unsure why people still decide to build their companies under Google products
savant_penguin··on Firefox now only available via snap on Ubuntu
So it's time to learn to compile Firefox from source, got it
savant_penguin··on Nintendo Switch prevents downgrades by irreparably blowing its own fuses (2020)
Just got busted

I did not know this is a false quote

:)

savant_penguin··on Adafruit requires 2FA to prevent bots buying out Raspberry Pi
Maybe I'm being naive here, but why is it so hard to just make more?
savant_penguin··on Nintendo Switch prevents downgrades by irreparably blowing its own fuses (2020)
This is an interesting idea, but quoting Stalin, isn't the really important thing the program that counts the burnt fuses? Maybe that's also exploitable

Anyway, the article also says that an exploit is already available to bypass that

savant_penguin··on Nvidia Hopper GPU Architecture and H100 Accelerator
I for one suffer deeply when I try to install the nvidia drivers on Linux. The website binaries _always_ break my system

Only the ppas from graphics-drivers work properly

My experience on windows is much more automatic and it never breaks anything. But I'd rather pay the price (installing on Linux) to avoid windows at all costs

savant_penguin··on Nvidia Hopper GPU Architecture and H100 Accelerator
1 petaflop on a chip?? What is the catch?
