saucymew··on Go grandmaster Shin defeats AI KataGo with a two-stone handicap
For a non-Go player, do you think this trend will persist, or is it more of a dead-cat/human bounce?
saucymew··on The Silicon Valley Founder Meat Grinder
Silicon Valley bats for 0-to-1 startups. If you swap "Revenue" for "Risk," that is culturally the same. People who don't have a "1" full-risk-on mode by default self-select themselves out of this game.

A toy model game is poker. If opponents know you'll never call an all-in/go all-in, they will always outplay you on the river.

And so, let the market pump funny numbers, and matriculate the lucky survivors.

saucymew··on Last Statements
An interesting Asian counterpart is the Japanese death haiku.

MUMON GENSEN

Died on the twenty-second day of the third month, 1390 at the age of sixty-eight

Life is an ever-rolling wheel

And every day is the right one.

He who recites poems at his death

Adds frost to snow.

saucymew··on Magnus Carlsen Wins the Freestyle (Chess960) World Championship
Individual games.

The ones that specifically come to mind are Lazavik vs. Carlsen, Speed Chess Championship 2025 Semi-Final, Round 3, and Sindarov vs. Carlsen, Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Finals 2025 in South Africa, Round 1 of the Group Stage Finals.

saucymew··on Magnus Carlsen Wins the Freestyle (Chess960) World Championship
It feels like the cohort GM player pool is mentally cooked against Magnus.

Youngsters like Lazavik during the Speed Chess Championship or Sindarov in Freestyle were the most recent convincing wins against Magnus, but the historical mental edge that Magnus comes into each game after beating the brakes out of everyone is hard to overcome.

Magnus' time will come! But not today.

saucymew··on Ring introducing new feature to allow police to live-stream access to cameras
+1 here.

The last time I checked, they're custom (read: expensive) and require building out your own backend video storage.

saucymew··on Business co-founders in tech startups are less valuable than they think
Great points. Good founders are on both sides of selling and building. If you don't believe in sellers, you've never worked with good ones.
saucymew··on Nearly 25 years later, Terminator 2 is getting a new video game
I was seven years old, and T2 was the first rated R film I saw which gave me horrific apocalyptic nightmares (see: Sarah's dream).

Completely worth it.

saucymew··on Amazon MGM Studios will gain creative control of the James Bond franchise
Everyone's got a number they can't refuse...

Defenders will say Bond deserves a modern update beyond the Daniel Craig era.

But if I'm reading the tea leaves from Lord of the Rings, I am not bullish on Amazon's MCU-ification of the Bond franchise.

saucymew··on California bill would require bots to disclose that they are bots
Contrarianly, startups should have a little maneuverability to be naughty. Any slight edge against incumbents is directionally sound policy, imho.
saucymew··on David Lynch has died
Having just read Lynch's Catching Big Fish, two quotes stood out to me:

"There's safety in thinking in a diner. You can have your coffee or your milk shake, and you can go off into strange dark areas, and always come back to the safety of the diner. "

"The light can make all the difference in a film, even in a character. I love seeing people come out of darkness."

What an interesting man. RIP.

saucymew··on Maggie Smith has died
Maggie Smith's character in both Abbey and HP brooked no BS. We're reaching the time now when more of the Harry Potter teachers are leaving this world, I am not looking forward to the students.
saucymew··on Reflections on Luck and Skill from the Part Time Poker Grind
"Poker is a combination of luck and skill. People think mastering the skill is hard, but they're wrong. The trick to poker is mastering the luck. That's philosophy. Understanding luck is philosophy, and there are some people who aren't ever gonna fade it. That's what sets poker apart. And that's what keeps everyone coming back for more." -- Shut Up & Deal
saucymew··on One of the first music videos made with Sora
It's happening.
saucymew··on How Quora died
From personal experience, the main Quora experience is their Digest e-mails; less than a third are relevant topics.

And there are now constant "Edit:" updates on answers addressing the trolls and hateful responses, further dampening my interest in answering questions.

Where have all the internet forums gone?

saucymew··on How we crowdfunded $750k for a giant book about keyboard history
You bring up good points against the physical medium (especially when it comes to note-taking), but I'd respectfully disagree.

Books I've read multiple times, the great ones, nothing beats a well-made physical edition.

The way light pushes off the pages, that smell...the book changes over time as you read it more. It almost takes on a life of its own with yours. And, if you need to be completely offline or Amazon decides to one day Google-drop your entire online library, that book will still be open to you.

Great work deserves to be supported. Buying a physical copy is my small way to show my support.

saucymew··on Ossian, the ‘Homer of the North’, the greatest literary hoax (2016)
When Ridley Scott's Napoleon came out, I picked up Napoleon: A Life by Andrew Roberts. Turns out Napoleon kept a copy of Ossian on him at all times during his war campaigns. Going deeper into the rabbit hole, I bought a copy of Ossian.

My pet theory is that he cribbed a lot of inspiration from Ossian for his famous harangues to his army before pivotal moments in battle.

"Farewell, thou bravest of men! Thou conqueror in the field! But the field shall see thee no more; nor the dark wood be lightened with the splendor of thy steel. Thou hast left no son. But the song shall preserve thy name. Future times shall hear of thee; they shall hear of the fallen Morar."

As Will Ferrell said, it gets the people going.

saucymew··on Ask HN: Where do you live? What's good or bad about it?
Los Angeles

Pros: AFFORDABLE, strong ethnic food centers. Do you want mountains? Yes. Do you want beach? Yes. The working class is diverse. On one freeway, you're looking at rockets, then up north, it's the film industry, and everything in between. Culture is overlooked and underappreciated (see: Getty) compared to other US metro cities.

Cons: Wild EVERYTHING-ELSE living cost structures, chronic homelessness, questionable climate change macro. And oh, wow, a special place for LA drivers.

saucymew··on Quitting the full-time poker scene
Not much has changed in the current live poker meta. Yes, the average player may be better, but if you put in the consistent time to study/solvers/hand reviews, IMHO that puts you in the top 20 percentile. It's getting to the top 5-10 percentile that is killer.

Ultimately, like life, the only true edge you can control is game selection. Hence, that Rounders quote that rings eternal:

"Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you ARE the sucker."

saucymew··on Quitting the full-time poker scene
Many competitive games/sports where you are trading ELO or rankings (chess, RTS, boxing) are like this, but I wouldn't judge it outright as "not productive."

I'd reckon it's more about the journey, the stories and friends we made along the way, even though there may be few.

Whenever someone asks, "Why do they do that?" I always share the man who holds the Guinness World Records for rolling an orange with their nose: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66xwQZuic3E

Why not?

saucymew··on Ask HN: PG's 'Do Things That Don't Scale' manual examples?
That's amazing! I'm glad you've found it useful for your own endeavors.
saucymew··on Ask HN: PG's 'Do Things That Don't Scale' manual examples?
During the pivot to Caviar (www.trycaviar.com), we were very cash-strapped and had to do most of the deliveries, customer service, and restaurant ops ourselves. We did this growing from 50 orders a month to over 150+ orders a day, non-stop.

If there was a mess-up, to save the cash bleed, I or one of the co-founders would hand-deliver the follow-up delivery ourselves, and apologize in-person. I would like to think our customers thought we literally went the extra-mile to ensure their satisfaction.

And because a lot of restaurants were set in their ways, if we had to send them a fax for a $1,000 order or call them by hand and manually speak to them the order item-by-item, we would. There are many delivery companies, but only a handful of institutional, famous restaurateurs.

saucymew··on The Cost of Good Movies
Great point, ultimately we're describing two different outcomes on where the current audience are spending their time on vs movies.

You posit television series, if I could add to that list, it'd be live streams, YouTube, Discord, etc.

All of these competing content genres are eroding the cultural cache and expected value of long film projects.

saucymew··on The Cost of Good Movies
After finishing reading the article, it didn't mention one anecdotal cultural trend a friend who's teaching film class at his local community college noticed.

Every semester at the beginning of class, he'd quiz his students what they've watched. In the past few years, nearly everyone has limited knowledge of current films, let alone old films. He realized young people do not have the attention/habit of watching long-form films.

Social media/TikTok videos own the top of the attention economy ladder now, not movies. This trend is not reversing anytime soon.

saucymew··on At 88, Poker Legend Doyle Brunson Is Still Bluffing. Or Is He?
Highly recommend Doyle's "Poker Wisdom of a Champion" for a throwback look at the wild days of poker in the 60's.

The story of the tennis match prop bet alone was worth it. Let the dog die!

saucymew··on Life advice from NYC chess hustlers
Thanks for the update. The last time I was in Union Sq was Aug 2020 and it was empty, glad to hear it’s still thriving!
saucymew··on Life advice from NYC chess hustlers
I’ve played in the NY parks, Marcel is the best player of the bunch interviewed here. Sadly, after COVID most of the Bryant/Union Sq games seem to have disappeared. It’s mostly Washington Sq now.

But there’s this one guy who comes and goes. Always wears these dapper, beautiful robes, and plays up to $100/game. I’ve yet to work myself up to step up to play him…

Can’t wait to visit the park games next time.

saucymew··on Ask HN: Is it wise to accept an intern position at Meta?
Ignore the HN armchair hate, Meta is an all-in project by a founder-led FAANG company. You'll be able to see first-hand its early successes/failures. Not bad for your first internship. Glhf!
saucymew··on The Eyes Have It (1953)
Ubik was still the most wild story I’ve read from Phillip K. Dick, more than his usual reality-bending stuff like Scanner or Three Stigmata.
