satyrnein··on Show HN: We built an open-source LaunchDarkly alternative for B2Bs
For me, it's that you described it as a LaunchDarkly competitor, which is mainly that "rollout" use case. It makes me expect the features they have, like alerts that a flag is serving the "launched" variation to everyone, and can be ripped out, or code search to see if any references to a flag remain.

I gather you're probably not doing that stuff?

That said, I have LaunchDarkly for feature rollout, an ACL layer for clients to control their own team's permissions, and then custom code to enable features based on a client's package plan. It feels like a lot of conceptual overlap, and a unified solution would be nice.

satyrnein··on The future (and the past) of the web is server side rendering
Can the same server side code render that fragment, regardless of whether it's part of the initial page load or a subsequent update? You need an additional route for the Ajax call, right? Just curious how this gets structured.
satyrnein··on Saving millions on logging: Finding relevant savings
Hubspot offers hosted websites and landing pages (including analytics) as part of their product, so it's not just internal facing data.
satyrnein··on Ask HN: Why did Frontend development explode in complexity?
I was referring to the server being the bottleneck, as you mention.
satyrnein··on Ask HN: Why did Frontend development explode in complexity?
In my experience, people don't start out with the goal of loading indicators on buttons. It's usually the mistaken idea that avoiding a page reload will make the action faster. Instead, you now have a slow Ajax call, and the button appears broken, so now it needs a loading indicator.
satyrnein··on Ask HN: Why are today's consumers not discerning what is ad and what is not?
Or all other goods and services, for that matter, in a market economy.
satyrnein··on Meta fires a software engineer two days after he relocated from India to Canada
Indeed, the recruiter he was working with could very well have been laid off as well.
satyrnein··on Browsers, JSON, and FormData
And then pjax/Turbolinks attempted to address that more surgically, without giving up on server rendering.
satyrnein··on Browsers, JSON, and FormData
Is this using Inertia.js? Did you consider Livewire?
satyrnein··on Do not rug on me: Zero-dimensional Scam Detection
Maybe not these days with the popularity of index funds, but it wasn't that long ago that places like Charles Schwab would push actively managed funds that would enrich fund managers while underperforming the market, and then they would close those funds and start new ones. Not quite a rug pull, as you'd keep the remainder of your money, but not great!
satyrnein··on Don’t let the great ESG self-deception infect climate tech investing
> For gods sake, I do not want laws to change to remove a companies requirement of a fiduciary duty so they can adopt more esg goals [3].

What's wrong with people trying out different kinds of organizations, and likeminded people investing in them?

> When did saying "I invest in a company for profit related reasons" turn into such a big boogey man.

Nobody is trying to prevent you from investing how you want; you are the one who wants to stop others from investing how they want.

satyrnein··on Ask HN: To encourage new coders should we adopt a new approach?
Solving a buttloads of mindless exercises that have no distinctive purpose is not a good way of learning

I agree but I think for non-engineers, starting from circuits is not the best approach. Just the same way everyone uses Excel, I think no-code tools may evolve into something that everyone uses.

satyrnein··on Ask HN: To encourage new coders should we adopt a new approach?
I wonder if the future is as bright as the pass.

Depends on whether you mean for dev salaries or for humanity as a whole.

satyrnein··on Ask HN: Easing wife onto Linux laptop How to?
I pay for YouTube premium just so my young kids don't see ads when they watch it on our TV.
satyrnein··on Ask HN: Should I be panicking about jobs in Europe?
What does this mean? Lift sanctions on Russia?
satyrnein··on Tell HN: Otter.ai bot recording meetings without consent
I hope you're right, because that world is probably coming, but to play devil's advocate:

The biggest difference is that I believe we would all be more honest with one another if we had perfect memory.

This reminds me of Mark Zuckerberg believing the world would be a better place if we couldn't have multiple identities, because multiple identities showed a lack of integrity.

It would prevent more marital strife than it would create.

It depends on which way the causality goes in "forgive and forget"!

satyrnein··on Tell HN: Otter.ai bot recording meetings without consent
That was a pretty good Black Mirror episode!
satyrnein··on IMDB deleted all negative user reviews for The Rings of Power
A current example is the movie Bullet Train, where Brad Pitt plays a character originally written as Japanese.

But there are plenty of others, if you search for "whitewashing in movies" you can find lists.

satyrnein··on IMDB deleted all negative user reviews for The Rings of Power
Not quite that level, but plenty of people seem fine with Bridgerton swapping the race of its characters, which I believe is otherwise a standard period drama.
satyrnein··on IMDB deleted all negative user reviews for The Rings of Power
Is this theoretical, or are you saying this actually happened? I haven't seen this latest show, but for example I had no problems with nonwhite characters in The Witcher. What is a European fantasy show anyway, it's not like they take place in literal Europe?

Somehow nobody complains about loss of immersion when characters are changed to white, which happens 100x more often.

satyrnein··on IMDB deleted all negative user reviews for The Rings of Power
This is correct, but what to do about it?

Just keep rolling with basically racist concepts because we like the other aspects of the mythology? Or explicitly overturn the racist parts, and keep the rest?

I like the second one, but apparently many other commenters are perfectly comfortable with "white=good".

satyrnein··on IMDB deleted all negative user reviews for The Rings of Power
I was surprised to learn (about myself at least) that this isn't really true, when I saw the musical Hamilton. Of course, the characters also break out into song, etc.
satyrnein··on SQLite: Past, Present, and Future
It seems like one idea in there is to store it both ways automatically (the HE variant)! That might be better then manually continually copying between your row store and your column store.
satyrnein··on Show HN: Countle
I was surprised you didn't have to use all of the numbers at the top. I never used the 8.
satyrnein··on Evaluation of TikTok vs. Instagram Reels
Those were great indicators! Rap-metal was the weird transition between rock/metal being ascendent in the 90s to the complete takeover by hip hop. Ringtones were people paying money to customize their mobile experience, they were early apps and appstore. ICQ and IM were telling us that text based instant messaging was take a lot of share from email and phone calls both.

Of course, this is easy in retrospect, I couldn't have forecast it correctly at the time!

satyrnein··on Evaluation of TikTok vs. Instagram Reels
Eh, previous generations were watching America's Funniest Home Videos and celebrity gossip on TV for 5 hours a day. It wasn't any better.
satyrnein··on Trending tabs are being deprecated due to low usage
We're on Azure DevOps (despite deploying to AWS) and it's been weirdly good. I'm a little sad that Microsoft's focus is shifting to GitHub. We're evaluating GitLab as another possible all-in-one solution.
satyrnein··on “The Merge,” the biggest change in Ethereum history
Not really "a lot" it seems. If you look at the price for "No merge by January 1st" it shows $0.03, which seems promising, but you can only buy like $3 worth of contracts at that price. If you try to buy $1000 worth, your average price shoots up to $0.52! Not sure if this is just a particularly thin market, or whether there's not actually a deep well on confidence that the merge is coming soon, or what.
satyrnein··on The PlanetScale serverless driver for JavaScript
I like foreign key constraints as much as the next guy, but they are hardly the only difference between MySQL and DynamoDB. For example, you should be able to use Rails/Django/Laravel without foreign key constraints, you can use off the shelf SQL clients or BI clients, etc.
satyrnein··on Talking to your customers: a disruptive Agile framework
Learned this one the hard way. If you ask the equivalent of "what could I add to make this more useful?" you will get a lot of worthless suggestions like "I don't know, maybe make it sortable by the other column, too?" that don't move the needle at all on engagement.
