satiric··on Is the 80 character line limit still relevant? (2008)
At home, if I put VS code on my 1080p 24" vertical monitor, I can see about 100 columns (at a reasonable font size, with the VS code sidebar up). I find that to be a little limiting at times but not too bad, and I can close the sidebar to get to 120 columns. Minor issues with horizontal character count are definitely worth it for the massive vertical space though (about 100 lines of code). I've been thinking about replacing it with a 27" 1440p monitor to get a few extra inches of monitor width at about the same pixel density.
satiric··on Ask HN: Where should I look to get a domain?
I just bought a 1.111b domain from Spaceship for 67 cents a year. They are [0-9]{6,9}\.xyz , i.e. 6 to 9 numbers under the .xyz TLD.
satiric··on Hacker Fab
Ah gotcha, I thought it was High Frequency and was wondering why it was so dangerous lol
satiric··on Making Electronic Calipers
With some microcontrollers you can do this "averaging out" just by changing ADC parameters, you don't even have to write the low-pass-filter code.
satiric··on Making Electronic Calipers
I don't actually see an accuracy number, only the claim of "millimeter precision", which is actually pretty bad for calipers. Looks like a fun project though. Basically a linear resolver sensor I guess. From how much effort the author has put into the project I'd estimate the accuracy is much better than +/- 0.5mm.
satiric··on Somebody please get me this desktop wind tunnel for Christmas
Wind tunnels for scale size cars are much less useful than they were just 15 years ago. My university sold its wind tunnel for 1/10th scale cars, it was just not that useful compared to CFD. CFD can get you simulations that take into account rotating tires (a big deal on the open wheel cars we were working on). You also don't have to worry about inaccuracies from 3D printing (or however you make the model).

"you can't avoid HF, and that's nasty stuff" do you mean High Voltage?
satiric··on Trump wins presidency for second time
What percentage of LA Times readers live in a swing state? Probably not many.
satiric··on Hacker Fab
No. But you said "searchable", and it has a search bar, and it works pretty well. Actually better, because the filters ("from:user", "in:channel-name", "has:image", etc.) sometimes work better than google's filters (Discord's are simply logic-based, no AI to screw things up).
satiric··on Hacker Fab
Discord is searchable.
satiric··on PacCam: Pac-Man controlled with your face
They say the video stays on your device. I have no reason to doubt them, but how would I make sure?
satiric··on Mt Rainier Elevation Survey
"Editors of the [Wikipedia] page appear to be non-experts in the field and biased against me personally for unknown reasons... It is unfortunate that Wikipedia cannot be trusted as a reliable source of information."

No, you cannot be trusted over the USGS (US Geological Survey). This is an important thing to understand when editing Wikipedia. It's not enough to be an expert in the field (other editors have no idea what your experience is). Peer-reviewed, published data from an official source is always going to be more trusted than data in a blog post.

satiric··on NASA is selling a brand-new Moon rover: Never used, one previous owner
I read this as "Ministero dell'Inferno" (Ministry of Hell) and was sad to see that it was actually much more mundane.
satiric··on On the design of text editors (2020)
How would you type those characters? For me (on mobile) I have a few options: copy it from your message, or google "not equals sign" and copy from the browser, or add a new keyboard that contains the character. On my desktop, I could also memorize windows' alt+x code... none are fantastic options.
satiric··on Who is Marcellus Williams: Execution in Missouri despite evidence of innocence
"Lara Asaro... gave testimony that Williams had confessed to her" I know very little about this kind of thing, but isn't this hearsay?
satiric··on Three Mile Island nuclear plant restart in Microsoft AI power deal
No one died at Fukushima... They did have to evacuate over 150,000 people though. I'm not sure we should be normalizing that.
satiric··on Why is it so hard to go back to the moon?
The moon gives no protection from radiation or meteors.
satiric··on Please add a "dark" theme for Hacker News
Oh I agree. I'm sure if I was significantly blind I would never have joined this community.
satiric··on Ask HN: What tools do you recommend for working on Windows?
Sorry, I just saw your reply. Seems reasonable. I like the flexibility of knowing that every Linux tool available for mainstream distros is available in WSL, and I don't have to think about compatibility (I run into issues now and again, but most software works just fine). But I guess it makes sense that if you're only using a few tools, and they're all in msys2, then that might be a smoother solution.
satiric··on Please add a "dark" theme for Hacker News
Custom CSS also means users can fix the designed-for-480p font sizes and paragraph widths, which the HN crew seem to have no interest in doing.

The difference is that you can buy Chinese EVs.
satiric··on Ask HN: What tools do you recommend for working on Windows?
Why use msys2 over WSL?
satiric··on What is the significance of the character "j" at the end of a Roman Numeral? (2013)
And in English as well. German "tag" (as in "guten tag"), to Old English "daeg" (with the g pronounced as a y), to Middle English "day".
satiric··on Ask HN: Best use of AI in video games you've seen?
Video games have had AI for about as long as video games have been around. Even Pong has an AI. This is an important distinction, because there is decades of research on the topic that gets confusing if people misinterpret the concept.

But to answer your question, there's a really impressive Skyrim mod that allows you to voice chat with NPCs in near-real time (capable of 5 second response times with some good hardware): https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/98631

satiric··on Microplastics Discovered in Human Penises for the First Time
"Seven different types of microplastics were detected, with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) the most prevalent".

My inner 8 year old really enjoys the fact that PPs contain PP.

satiric··on Louisiana Requires Ten Commandments to Be Displayed in Public-School Classrooms
I was interested, so I went on a wikipedia tangent. It was brought up in the courts in Reynolds v. United States in 1878, when the Mormons were saying that anti-bigamy laws were unconstitutional (they did not convince the court, and it continues to be illegal now).

More recently, it's also been used to say that the bans on peyote use were illegal, because of the folks that use peyote in religious ceremonies. Because of that it's now legal in all 50 states if using it in a traditional Native American ceremony.

So yeah, it might not be as commonly talked about, but it's still come up in the courts, and there are plenty of folks who care.

satiric··on The Hubble Space Telescope has lost a majority of its gyroscopes
Can they take astronauts, and parts, and all the EVA equipment, up to a high enough orbit?

From a quick google, it looks like Starship could do it in the future if it becomes human rated (in many years' time), or Dragon could theoretically be extensively modified to work (although it seems like this plan has been rejected by NASA because of how risky it would be: https://payloadspace.com/spacex-wont-be-visiting-hubble-anyt...).

satiric··on The Hubble Space Telescope has lost a majority of its gyroscopes
Are there any launch systems capable of maintenance on Hubble? I thought all the old missions were done with the space shuttle.
satiric··on How actors remember their lines
To be fair, the behind-the-scenes footage seemed to show it as more of a breakdown (of course, the behind-the-scenes footage might be bending the truth a bit. And the two aren't mutually exclusive).
