sathackr··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
I'm sure this chip will be the epitome of security just like the Intel ME chip was and will be completely unhackable so it's okay to give this watchdog chip unfettered access to every level of the system.

Nothing bad will happen.

sathackr··on Running local models is good now
The hardware, the power systems, the cooling systems. They need maintenance.

The OS needs updates, file systems get corrupted.

Fans get dirty.

All the things that you need to deal with in hosting your own server infrastructure you have to deal with when hosting your own AI infrastructure (which runs on servers...)

sathackr··on Running local models is good now
The opposite of that has been happening for 20 years now with cloud compute.

It won't happen with AI models either.

It's almost ingrained in the American business model now. Outsource everything. Nobody wants to manage a room full of servers when they can spend 2-3x as much and outsource that headache along with the responsibility for it.

Same will happen with AI. Whether that means paying Anthropic that premium or paying AWS.

I'm in a relatively small business, we recently had an outage related to our local infrastructure.

I got pressure from the CEO saying it wasn't reliable to host our own infrastructure anymore even though our total internal down time over the last 5 years is significantly less than even a single of the larger recent AWS outages.

Everyone wants to shuck the chore and the responsibility.

sathackr··on Flock cameras keep telling police a man who doesn't have a warrant has a warrant
"They can't remove it without knowing who the warrant is for" is absolutely Flocks problem.

They're alerting on a license plate but yet somehow they can't turn off that license plate alert using just the license plate number? Fucking bullshit

sathackr··on The FCC just saved Netgear from its router ban for no obvious reason
MEGA is now headquartered in Hungary...who until very recently was run by someone very much aligned with the far right movement.
sathackr··on Android now stops you sharing your location in photos
GrapheneOS still does this -- allows controlling internet access on a per-app basis.
sathackr··on "whole civilization will die tonight"
It's almost like 'shadow-banned'

it's not listed as flagged or dead, but it's also not on the first 4 pages despite https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/trump-warns-a-whole-civil... being on the 4th page with only 23 points

sathackr··on "whole civilization will die tonight"
This absolutely demands the attention of every American
sathackr··on Honda is killing its EVs
yes. it's an argument that since EVs are heavier than fossil-fuel vehicles due to their batteries, that they generate more particulate emissions (brakes/tire dust) than fossil-fuel vehicles.

it's a wrong argument, but it's still circulated in groups of factually-challenged people

sathackr··on Honda is killing its EVs
ev particulate is identical if not less than fossil fuel.

same tires (actually a little harder due to being LRR tires) same brakes (that get used significantly less thanks to regenerative braking)

sathackr··on Comma openpilot – Open source driver-assistance
It's infinitely better than HDA2 at tracking and maintaining lanes.

HDA2 cuts out if there is a break in lines more than 50ft or so.

Openpilot can track the slightest of roads, even able to follow off-road the tracks in grass from a leading car.

It does basically everything HDA2 does and then some, and does it much better.

It has a driver-monitoring camera that you control, that monitors for inattentiveness which is much more effective than simple wheel-torque based sensors.

sathackr··on Splice a Fibre
The hardest thing about splicing fiber is not splicing fiber(at least not anymore)

It's cable management and routing to keep things from kinking and breaking while accounting for cable flexing, thermal expansion, and unforseen circumstances like another company lashing their cables to yours for vertical support.

All while maintaining future serviceability

sathackr··on Please donate to keep Network Time Protocol up – Goal 1k
Looks like the first $1000 goal is specifically for maintaining to he NTP website and maybe developers? While the other is a broader goal for the foundation
sathackr··on Please donate to keep Network Time Protocol up – Goal 1k
If you follow the "Foundations work" link at the bottom, you're taken to another page that shows $4,675 of $11,000 November goal.
sathackr··on Please donate to keep Network Time Protocol up – Goal 1k
That seems very low for such a high profile site/project

I donated an amount but the bar didn't move and is at the same level($395) as before my donation

sathackr··on Samsung Family Hub for 2025 Update Elevates the Smart Home Ecosystem
[11] Ads on Family Hub Cover screens will serve contextual or non-personal ads. Family Hub devices are not collectiong[sic] personal information or tracking consumers.

How are they serving "contextual" ads without collecting/tracking anything?

sathackr··on ChatGPT Atlas
I hope they start to-reinvent the way things are accessed so that I can stop being the product.

You can already ask ChatGPT for product recommendations and they(at least in what they say) don't take product placement or ad money.

It would be incredibly refreshing to have a portal into the current internet in which I am not the product.

I'd pay them substantially to be an unbiased assistant rather than some conglomerate shoving whatever they're paid to shove down my throat

sathackr··on GrapheneOS and forensic extraction of data (2024)
I use it. No issue

The only app so far I've found that won't work is ParkMobile and you can just use their website

sathackr··on Unsafe and Unpredictable: My Volvo EX90 Experience
fwiw I've heard from others that their experience with Kia has been much better. That seems hard to believe since Kia is owned by Hyunday.

I definitely expected more Hyundai when I bought the most expensive EV they had to offer at the highest trim level available.

sathackr··on AI overviews cause massive drop in search clicks
My YT premium recently expired for a payment issue and ffs the ads are absolutely insane.
sathackr··on Unsafe and Unpredictable: My Volvo EX90 Experience
If you have a problem they take 4 weeks to fix it all while you're paying $50+/day for a rental car that they will fight you tooth and nail on reimbursing.

One local dealer refused to honor under warranty the work another dealer did.

If you have any damage (even minor cosmetic) they will blame that on your issues regardless of relativity.

(I have a Hyundai that's had the ICCU replaced once, the ABS IEB twice, and the low-voltage battery 3 times, two of the 3 times on my dime. All on a less than 3-year-old car with less than 100k miles)

The company has been miserable to deal with compared to my past experiences with other brands.

sathackr··on Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 Incident on July 14, 2025
Good writeup except the entirely false timeline shared at the beginning of the post
sathackr··on Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 Incident on July 14, 2025
Yea the "timeline" indicating impact start/end is entirely false when you look at the traffic graph shared later in the post.

Or they have a different definition of impact than I do

sathackr··on Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 Incident on July 14, 2025
