sasasassy··on Quantum Supremacy Using a Programmable Superconducting Processor
I'm confused as well. This is what their youtube video [1] claims, but to me it seems obvious that a computer simulating another computer would be slower.

sasasassy··on Beating Decades of Optimized C with 80 Lines of Haskell
OpenMP IS trivially usable.
sasasassy··on The Simple Reason Netflix Is Paying More Than $500M for Seinfeld
I've been watching Friends on Netflix. I'm now on season 9, having never watched it before. I've watched the other odd show here and there but none near as long as Friends.

This all to say that your experiences may not extend to others, and they have ample data to make their business decisions.

sasasassy··on A man who linked CO2 to climate change in 1895
It usually happens much slower than pictured in the graph, and it is believed that humans are the cause for the acceleration.

On the other hand it also isn't the end of the world as some people would have you believe.

sasasassy··on Women make up 54% of new students entering Iranian universities
I've heard the theory that in countries where women are more dependent, like Muslim countries, they have much higher levels of enrolment exactly to be able to escape their dependency on male family members. Similarly in poorer countries, like India and ex-Soviet republics, the enrolment for the sciences versus arts is larger than the rest of the world.
sasasassy··on Uber And Lyft take more from drivers than they say: survey
Because there are business where it is natural for customers to cluster. It is not natural for car customers to cluster since nothing stops you from purchasing from a different brand, there is little or no vendor lock-in.

On a social platform or online marketplace there is a natural tendency to cluster, customers do not want to maintain multiple social profiles or bookmark 10 "amazons".

sasasassy··on Ask HN: Invited by Facebook for privacy roundtable. What questions should I ask?
But.. they do, though. You can (and people do) make a very targeted ad, then query what users matched with it, and so on until you've sufficient data for your purposes. Plus you can use their public APIs to then match their ad data with the users public information. Facebook knows this, and does not prevent it (by hiding user identifiers for instance) because it's part of their strategy.
sasasassy··on Inequality is exacerbated by the assumption that everyone has a mobile phone
And the more "AI" is involved, we'll see more people excluded in a variety of ways, the true negatives.
sasasassy··on Boeing falsified records for 787 jet that developed a fuel leak
Well, they were caught (warned about it), so they came clean. It's still a bit troubling that they didn't detect themselves. Better than nothing I suppose.
sasasassy··on Calibra – Digital Wallet for Libra
It's just marketing. Of course if you really want to you can bend a blockchain for this purpose, eroding it as much as possible, with the central validators and what not. A rose by any other name...
sasasassy··on We Have Four Years to Save Ourselves from Climate Change, Harvard Scientist Says
Another wild prediction. This person's wild claim is that if go on with the current path the ocean's will rise 7 meters and there will be worse storms. You can visit http://www.floodmap.net/ and see how 7 meters is nothing, even discounting that we can adapt and protect against flooding. Worse storms are bad, but if the alternative is "World War II-style transformation of industry", what alternative is that? How can the world say to 5 billion people "sorry, you have to stop your industrialisation now, there may be storms in the US".
sasasassy··on Removing Your Site from the Wayback Machine
In most parts of the world you are entitled to privacy even if you are outside, and you can demand photos/videos taken of you without your consent to be deleted.

Plus, just because I have a website, that doesn't make it's content open domain, for some business to copy all it's contents and publish them without my knowledge.

sasasassy··on WWDC 2019 Keynote Livestream
Everything is overpriced. Everything they've done has been overpriced for years. They're a marketing company first, selling overpriced iThings because they're status symbols to people with poor judgment and too much money.
sasasassy··on "DigitalOcean Killed Our Company"
Your "established operations" are more expensive and GCP is newer than DO. Plus, getting the attention of someone to restore your account is probably easier in DO than in a faceless giant company like Amazon, Microsoft or Google.
sasasassy··on Yellow Vest Facebook group with 350k members frozen on European election day
A ban on political campaigning is very different from banning speech on politics in general.
sasasassy··on Police fine pedestrian for disorderly behaviour after he tried to cover his face
In many countries recording someone in public without their consent is simply illegal. If you notice someone caught you in a picture or video, and you visible (not just a blur in a giant mass of people), you can request (force) the person to delete the footage. I've seen this happen multiple times.

Concerts and other closed events routinely have as a condition for attendance that you consent to have your photo taken.

sasasassy··on Blow up: how half a tonne of cocaine transformed the life of an island
It went from a poor fishermen's village to the poorest village for decades. It really destroyed the economy and lives of the place, there are no jobs there whatsoever and you are advised against going there without protection (which is unheard off in the rest of Portugal).
sasasassy··on Raising a Ladder to the Moon, Under the Sea
I thought that too, but looking at the map there are no other transoceanic cables to Portugal, so maybe there are deep holes off that coast.
sasasassy··on Czech Republic proposes the highest digital tax rate in Europe
I'm guessing a 2-7% tax is on the low side of such balance.
sasasassy··on Denver voters consider next frontier in decriminalizing drugs: magic mushrooms
Where is caffeine not taxed?
sasasassy··on China putting minority Muslims in 'concentration camps,' U.S. says
There is vast evidence for these camps, heck, you can see them in google maps.

https://theintercept.com/2018/08/13/china-muslims-uighur-det... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/China_hidden_cam... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jan/11/if-you-enter-a...

sasasassy··on China putting minority Muslims in 'concentration camps,' U.S. says
What does being a violent or not violent crime have to do with it? What does being incarcerated for committing crimes have to do with "disappearing" for being muslim? How does the US imprisonment rate of 0.716% even compare to putting about 30% of the population in concentration camps?
sasasassy··on Facebook Bans Louis Farrakhan, Milo Yiannopoulos, InfoWars and Others
And in Russia they ban instead this or that free speech advocate. And in China it is some other group of people that cannot speak. And in India, and in Brasil, Iran, Pakistan, UK, etc. There are always offensive people or sensitive subjects.

The only question is Facebook going to ban each group of people per country basis or globally. If globally, we are going to have a very limited, gray area of speech in Facebook.

sasasassy··on Julian Assange arrested in London
The Swedish rape allegations were an obvious sham and have already been dropped years ago. Usually when this happens the case is just dropped, yet the UK really pressed in arresting Assange for "failing to appear in court", which is most countries is a minor thing (the accused is not punished for lying in court or missing court dates). I think it's obvious that any excuse will do for extraditing him to the US, to make an example of him. But so much time has passed and the case is so public now that I at least hope the UK will save face and free him instead of extraditing him.
sasasassy··on The Dutch East India Co was richer than Apple, Google, Facebook combined (2017)
I didn't check the math but it doesn't surprise me. These guilds were quite often in the business of war making and colonisation, selling ads seem paltry in comparison.
sasasassy··on How to increase your chances of finding a hidden camera
Creepy
sasasassy··on Google blocks China ads that help bypass censorship
I think the parent comment was referring to IBM in the Holocaust. Foreign powerful companies that would really have little to lose for not helping the Nazi regime.
sasasassy··on Apple announces Apple Card credit card
Commenting on the video of the event in 7 minutes:

1. Apple News was announced again? I think it was already released wasn't it? Still not interested though. No matter how much "AI" they use to make recommendations.

2. Being forced to have an iPhone to have a credit card that seems like any other card sounds like a terrible idea. Plus where I live we already have multiple apps and services that allows me to create an infinite amount of cards and transfer money with zero fees.

3. The single game subscription seems interesting, specially the part where they say they can also be played offline. I wonder how they do that. I don't play games anymore, still, interesting, wouldn't mind trying it.

4. tv.channels looks like other similar services, and they seem to imply you can only use their app on smart TVs and their devices, which is a big no-no. Still, if with good shows and price competitive...

sasasassy··on Twitter forces all new users to enter a valid phone number
Good, it's a terrible service so I support any terrible practices they choose to support in speeding towards their demise. It's always been just a platform for the self entitled (verified profiles) to spread their gospel to the masses.
sasasassy··on Chrome “clear cookies on exit” feature does not work
This is most likely a website keeping the same data in HTML5 web storage, flash cookies or other, and when noticing one of them has been removed, repopulating them. These are also sometimes called super, zombie or persistent cookies.
