sarnu··on Italy's Bending Spoons, owner of AOL and Vimeo, files for Nasdaq IPO
From my view, komoot got a lot better since it was bought by BS. I don't know how they did this while laying off a lot of devs, but compared to the years before, a ton of useful things got shipped.

Disclaimer: I have the yearly subscription. Maybe the new features are only available for customers who are subscribing, not the one-time purchases.

sarnu··on More precise elevation data for GraphHopper routing engine
My guess is that analyzing the recorded activities is what komoot did to get useful elevation data.
sarnu··on More precise elevation data for GraphHopper routing engine
Yes, agree. Some services (e.g. komoot) apparently have good data, or can work around it. Others are struggling with lack of precision in the DEM data. As much as I like the tweakability of BRouter, the tracks generated never give realistic elevation info.
sarnu··on Do architects still need to draw? (2020)
I am surprised at the other comments here that state sketching is a skill worth preserving. That's something the author of the article clearly states, hist call to discussion is about technical drawing by hand. And I'm surprised this is still a topic. I studied architecture more than 25 years ago and at that time hand drawing was already phasing out. I have never practiced architecture since then and never thought there would be a debate about drawing by hand again. From what I heard of friends being in the business, doing 2D-drawings isn't a thing in bigger projects anymore, as it is way more economical and less error prone to do the plans with 3D modeling.

sarnu··on If it is worth keeping, save it in Markdown
You don't have to use any plugins. You can put your obsidian vault anywhere you like, e.g. in a folder that is synched by nextcloud. I use a git repo for this, which works fine also on mobile.
sarnu··on Urban spatial order: street network orientation, configuration, and entropy
The author of the paper is also the author of a really useful python package for processing OSM data: https://github.com/gboeing/osmnx
sarnu··on The Anti-Ownership eBook Economy
In addition to that, many public libraries offer a service where one can lend ebooks. And this is integrated in the tolino. This is based on some DRM system from Adobe, though. But still, a nice thing as an additional source for ebooks.
sarnu··on Kern and Co. AG: Instruction for the Use of the Dotting Pen 1069 [pdf]
Modern cartography is awesome, but the mechanical/optical devices that were used before the advent of the computer are just as cool. And hand-drawn maps like the swiss topo maps are a work of art.

I am biased, though, my father used to work in photogrammetry, Kern was one of the companies he worked for. We had lots of nice maps, and I have still some things from Kern in use (just some low level stuff like magnifying glasses, compasses and pencils).

sarnu··on On Management and the Maginot Line
Living near a stretch of the Maginot line it amazes me to no end how much concrete is still around and will be for long time.
sarnu··on Learn to sew your own outdoor gear
If you are interested in myog stuff, there's https://www.reddit.com/r/myog/ for you. Lots of inspiration and a place to ask questions (and have them answered).
sarnu··on Custom made synth, audio and retro-gaming gear
To me, it looks like a reference to a Braun phonosuper sk 4. https://braunaudio.de/en/snowwhitecoffin-sk4-dieter-rams-han...
sarnu··on Which brand/fuel/color/plate of car has the most “psychopath drivers”?
In my personal perception, Mercedes AMG (do these count as Mercedes?) drivers are the worst by far.
sarnu··on Voith Schneider Propeller
In my childhood I always wanted a model tugboat with a Voith Schneider Propeller, but never could afford one.

They are still around, in modernized versions with brushless motors. See for example https://www.hobbydirekt.de/Alte-Kategorien/sonstiges/VOITH-S....

sarnu··on VSCode memory leak issue marked “out-of-scope”
I use it for developing inside docker containers. We have a dockerized Apache Airflow setup for which I am adding plugins. Remote VSCode allows to work inside one of the containers spun up by docker-compose, so I do not have to simulate the environment the final system is running in. Think of it as python venv on steroids.

Another use case is remote ssh where I can work on a headless system with a graphical editor. I use it e.g. to work in a minimal Linux VM from my Windows desktop.

The remote docker plugin is a little fiddly to setup, but once running works pretty good.

sarnu··on Ask HN: What did you purchase that measurably improved your quality of life?
Also consider a gravel bike. Currently, it's my favourite type of bike. You do not have to stick to paved roads, which are infested with unattentive/aggressive drivers. A gravel bike with wide enough tires is a good compromise between off-road capabilities and speed. If I had decent mtb trails near my doorstep maybe I would use the mtb more often. My road bike does not see much use anymore.
sarnu··on Ceramicspeed chainless bike can nows shift gears and carry load
These rules apply to racing bikes, not to bikes that are used everyday for commuting or recreation. If recumbents were so much superior to the classic diamond frame, they would dominate the non-racing-bike market. I rode enough recumbents to prefer my uprights when commuting in a city, also for mountain biking and rides through hilly areas. If a was commuting in a flat area outside of a city I would maybe consider a recumbent.
sarnu··on To build the cities of the future, we must get out of our cars
Slitghly OT: These are the books of my childhood!

I really loved them. Especially these futuristic panels like in http://klausbuergle.de/buergle_verkehr1.htm .

sarnu··on The Aldi effect: how one discount supermarket transformed the way Britain shops
Out of curiosity: what do you cook that you do not get at Aldi? Myself, I could get more than 90% of the ingredients of most recipes at Aldi. Some things I buy at an Asian or Turkish store, and I have to buy most cheeses somewhere else. But Aldi has come a long way, now they sell a decent variety of organic, regional produce.
sarnu··on The cult of rotary mixers
I have a Braun MX32 my mother gave me. Older than me, and I am old. This thing is so loud you want to use hearing protection. But it can knead 1kg heavy dough for e.g. pizza. Or whip the whites of 12 eggs. (Yes, I know the article is about audio mixers).
sarnu··on The Middle Child Is Going Extinct
Both for the kid and for the parents. For example, with single childs, you have to arrange play dates. If you have more than one, chances are, they play together. Another thing: with a single child, this one child has to fulfill all of the expectations of the parents. So it is quite a burden for the child. And another thing is, with more than one child you see that your education has a limited effect on the character of a child. Assuming that you treat your kids in a similar way, you can notice a big variety in character between them.
sarnu··on The Middle Child Is Going Extinct
The dynamic totally changes with three kids. I have three kids, and when one of them is not at home (doesn't matter which one) the atmosphere changes completely, hard to describe how. What I want to say: Having three is different from having two, but not necessarily harder. They have more things to handle between themselves. I could not bear to raise a single child. That must be really hard.
sarnu··on If America Lost Its Electricity: An Electromagnetic Shock
I can second that, this book is really worth reading.
sarnu··on We Evolved to Run But We're Doing It Wrong
> I guess it's related to personality types.

This and it also depends on your experience. When I started running I also used a heart rate monitor and training plans guided by an app. By the time I got a feeling how fast I can run I ditched the heart rate strap. Now I still use a running watch with gps, but do not let it set my pace. On the other hand, I'm not ino competitive running, I'm doing it just for fun.

sarnu··on We Evolved to Run But We're Doing It Wrong
> I always recommend to people now that if they can they should cycle and run. And not only because of some health reasons, I would miss either of it if I concentrated on only running or cycling.
sarnu··on Headbadge Hunter: Rescuing the Beautiful Branding of Long Lost Bicycles
I once made one myself. It was a touring bike in british racing green, and I thought it deserved a headbadge. So I engraved it on a piece of silver. Never took a photo of it, though...
sarnu··on Abandoned Soviet Space Shuttles [video]
Yes, I can second that. Cool museum. My kids love it, too.
sarnu··on Docker on Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 5
That was my first thought, too. At first sight, Windows containers seem to run only on Windows hosts. Maybe the licensing is covered through the hosts' licencse (speculation: you can run n Windows containers if you buy license x for the host OS).
sarnu··on Paperwork: A Personal Document Manager for Scanned Documents
The screenshot in https://github.com/jflesch/paperwork/wiki/File-import suggests that paperwork can import already scanned files.
sarnu··on How to Put Natural Gas Meter Online with SimpleCV and Scikit
Cool, this is something I had on my project backlog. Actually, they had to monitor the same type of gas meter I have in my basement (and they are produced in my neighborhood).

Currently, it seems I just have to lurk around on HN long enough until someone posts a solution for a thing I was thinking about.
