sanp··on Launch HN: Inri (YC W23) – Wealthfront for Investing in India
Wouldn’t the depreciation be higher in a higher (US) interest environment? The gap between US interest rates and Indian interest rates is what determines depreciation and the RBI (effectively, the Indian Govt as the RBI has no real independence) has not been as aggressive in increasing rates. So, I see faster INR depreciation for the near future.
sanp··on Reasons the banking crisis isn’t a repeat of 2008
Ah! Blame the economic ignorance of the masses and the traders. Peter was always right even if reality turned out to be different.
sanp··on Reasons the banking crisis isn’t a repeat of 2008
Yes. Peter Schiff has predicted 20 of the last 0 collapses and depressions.
sanp··on America’s banks are missing hundreds of billions of dollars
The title is clickbaity. It's not like the banks are missing any of their depositors' money.
sanp··on America’s banks are missing hundreds of billions of dollars
Would pre-2018 regulations (when they were eased for banks with deposits less than $250B) have prevented this?
sanp··on UK backs Rolls-Royce project to build a nuclear reactor on the moon
Nice Chernobyl reference!
sanp··on T-Mobile Reaches Agreement to Acquire Mint Mobile for Up to $1.35B
Why would a monopolist keep things the same or better? As you said, consumer surplus is the key here. The monopolist will capture almost all of the consumer surplus. This is a worse situation for customers than with competition. With competition this isn’t likely.
sanp··on US Says All SVB Deposits Safe, Creates New Backstop for Banks
The WSJ editorial board disagrees with everything the Biden admin does. I am yet to see an a WSJ opinion say ANYTHING positive about the Biden admin. If someone here has seen such an article I would love to see the link. When someone is this one-sided, it is hard to take them seriously.

But when you purchase hardware, are you not paying a lower cost than what you would to the hyperscalers?
sanp··on Investors are going nuts for ChatGPT-ish artificial intelligence
Given the typical failure rate of acquisitions, this is even more impressive.
sanp··on White Castle collecting burger slingers' fingerprints looks like a $17B mistake
Even if that were the case, the still did not get consent and that is the problem. “Secure” fingerprint access does not excuse the lack of consent.
sanp··on US Physician Blasts 'Lucrative System of For-Profit Medicine'
I don’t understand the idea of freeloading here. Insurance companies charge rates the market will bear. They are still going to charge these rates if insurance payouts to the freeloaders go away. This is not a perfect market where competitors will spring up overnight to provide insurance at lower rates if the cost of doing so goes down.
sanp··on Coinbase’s chief product officer will leave with a $105M payday
Article says "...Ford's revenues are five times the size of Coinbase's...". Isn't it more like 69x (Q3: Ford $39.4B and Coinbase: $576M).
sanp··on Show HN: I “wrote” a kid's book with ChatGPT and Midjourney
perhaps the core idea of the story can still come from you but ChatGPT can help flesh out the details in write it in a compelling manner.
sanp··on Big Pharma Greed’s Knows No Bounds
The 20 year period is based on the assumption that allowing it is beneficial to society overall (inventor shares details to further human knowledge and in return gets to monetize). If this assumption is no longer valid (when pharma companies overcharge) then why should we continue to support such an arrangement?
sanp··on Big Pharma Greed’s Knows No Bounds
They make money because patents prevent others from producing that “something”. The justification for patents is that the inventor gets to milk their invention in return for sharing how they did it. This is based on the an assumption that society as a whole benefits from this arrangement. So, if society as a whole is not benefiting from patents because pharma companies are charging obscene amounts then it is time to get rid of patents for medicines (or regulate how much pharma companies get to charge).
sanp··on South Korea in demographic crisis as many stop having babies
This will not change unless housing is fixed.
sanp··on The Public Shouldn’t Pay for Drugs Twice
This assumes that only pharma companies can execute the steps required to bring the fruits of all that research to market. There is no reason a govt entity can’t do the same. It is a question of setting up the right incentives for the employees of that govt entity.
sanp··on The type system is a programmer's best friend
Question: isn’t a rich type system as described here similar to OOP?

sanp··on Florida to Supreme Court: Let us regulate social networks as common carriers
Isn’t it up to Congress to legislate this? Or, is the hope that the current SC will make law?
sanp··on TGV unveils high-speed trains of the future
But that’s sunk cost. That’s not increasing with consumption unless u get to a point where u have to build a new plant.
sanp··on The West needs to grow up
Does anyone have sources to cite on the negative impact of “wokeness”? Hard numbers. Could find any quantifiable impact. Perhaps I am not looking properly.
sanp··on Ask HN: One team lead always builds a monoethnic team – what to do?
You are assuming “diversity is worthwhile” is the same as “diversity alone is required for success”. No one is saying that companies can outcompete based on diversity alone. But that doesn’t mean that diversity is not worthwhile. In fact, several companies do not even do things that have been shown to be worthwhile in outcompeting. You are assuming people in companies behave like perfectly rational automatons who will do exactly what is required to outcompete.
sanp··on The U.S. may be losing the fight against monkeypox, scientists say
Bang-for-buck. A little too on the nose.
sanp··on Amazon is intimidating and harassing organizing workers in Montreal
I don’t know why you are being downvoted.

In fact, it is your local McD franchisee who is doing the most to ensure that min wage workers do not get organized.

sanp··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
So, I should be forced to give blood if someone’s life is at risk and they need my blood (or, kidney)? There is a 3rd party to consider here and they are already living and breathing. So, blood or organ donations should be made mandatory. And if the argument is that the woman is responsible for getting pregnant then apply the above logic to a person you accidentally injured in a car accident. Now, anyone who causes a car accident should be forced to give blood (or any other part of their body) to ensure the victim is saved.
sanp··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Bullshit. You not getting vaccinated puts people around you at risk. A women getting an abortion at worst impacts her and in most cases impact her positively.
