sandeepshetty··on Ask HN: Should I quit my current job at a startup?
It's kinda weird to use your personal account to ask this (instead of an anonymous one). Based on your submissions here on HN (https://news.ycombinator.com/submitted?id=_evnr) and a quick google search for your name (which throws up [links redacted]), it becomes obvious that you are talking about [name redacted] and saying that it is not going anywhere.

As for your questions, do what's best for you. It's also usually best to leave out emotions when making these kind of decisions.

It doesn't matter if it's been 2 years or 2 months, as long as you have a valid reason for quitting, you shouldn't be stereotyped as an "unstable" employee (even more so, if you are good at what you do).

I'm in Mumbai as well, so if you need to "talk" to someone before your decide, I'll be more than happy to lend a ear.

sandeepshetty··on Ask HN: Best current Linux-compatible laptop?
Have been using the 2nd gen Dell XPS 13 developer edition that comes pre-installed with Ubuntu and I'm loving it. Wasn't all smooth sailing though: http://www.sandeep.io/157

The latest edition is even better.

At the time I also looked at the ultrabook from System 76 but decided to skip it because of keyboard issue reports and lack of support in my country.

Edit 1: The keyboard on the Dell XPS is nowhere as good as a Thinkpad, but it beats them on form factor, price and support (at least in my country).

Edit 2: The X1 carbon has a slightly flexible carbon-fiber chassis which I didn't like but it's a great option if you want a bigger display than the XPS 13 and don't mind the price.

Swiping from right-to-left past 0% on a routine will give you the option to delete it.

Thanks. The launcher icon of the current version appears smaller on the Nexus 4. Will be fixing this soon. BTW, I upgraded to Nexus 4 from the Nexus One about 3 weeks ago :)

Thanks. Let me know if you try it. Would love to know if it worked for you.

It's on my list. Need to get OSX first :)

Why do people direct comments at AC assuming he will read them here? Isn't that a little self-centered? Wouldn't it be more appropriate to leave such comments at the original post?

It's kinda weird to do HTTPS within a modal IFRAME. The padlock icon is an interesting hack but not enough IMO.

Thanks for sharing this. I can relate with the idea of rewriting over and over again. I dislike how blogs make the idea of editing content once it's posted feel "dirty" since posts are supposed to be temporal. I'm working on something that solves this problem for me: http://converspace.github.com/ConverspaceSpec/
sandeepshetty··on Show HN: Converspace, kinda like what blogs should have evolved into
I've updated the link with a basic mock: https://github.com/sandeepshetty/converspace/blob/master/REA...

I'm only implementing textual content at the moment (long-form and micro-updates). Think about the textarea like Facebook's status update box: You usually add text, but if you add a link it figures out if it's a video, etc. Think even Twitter's web interface does this now.

Note to self: Finish mocks ASAP.

I've primarily worked on the backend and have been some sketches on paper but nothing concrete to share yet. If you have any specific questions I'd be glad to answer them.

I have some running code but it isn't ready for launch yet. Just putting this out there to get feedback on what you like and what you think needs improvement.

Most blogs still run on shared hosting primarily for reasons of cost and a lot of people have existing shared hosting accounts that allow them to host multiple domains. If you're looking at individuals (the majority of whom are not typical HN readers and haven't gone down the PaaS path) installing this, it still makes sense to go LAMP.

I just read about this the other day in The Slow Web [1] by Jack Cheng:

"iDoneThis is a part of the slow web movement. After you email us, your calendar is not updated instantaneously. But rest up, and you’ll find an updated calendar when you wake."

I like that it can be used as the opposite of a todo list. Instead of a list telling you what to do, you tell it what you've done.

sandeepshetty··on Ask HN: Any solopreneurs here?
Your answers lead me naturally to my next question :)

Why/how did you choose to build music related apps (given that it's a competitive space and your not a musician)?

Thanks for taking the time to answer. Hoping you'll reach your goals sooner rather than later :)

sandeepshetty··on Ask HN: Any solopreneurs here?
You seem to be doing pretty good. A couple of questions:

1. Is this ("Tiny Piano has made enough revenue over the past several months to pay all my bills") all ad revenue Edit: Just saw the in-app song pack purchases. Is that where all the revenue is coming from?

2. Isn't, the music niche very competitive on the app store? What are you doing differently?

3. Given that (as you say) downloads begin to trail off, how are you planning on getting to 10M+ downloads?

4. I like the specific goals :) Is being specific (10M+ downloads) a hack you had to come up with to stay focused or just something you wanted?

5. Are you a musician yourself?

sandeepshetty··on Ask HN: [Pricing] Charging a one-time fee for a SaaS app?
See my reply above to patio11.
sandeepshetty··on Ask HN: [Pricing] Charging a one-time fee for a SaaS app?
I'm seeing this behavior especially for addons. When customers are paying a recurring fee for the main app and the costs of addons add up, they seem to prefer a fixed one-time fee (not necessarily equal to the CLV).
sandeepshetty··on Ask HN: [Pricing] Charging a one-time fee for a SaaS app?
I've been thinking about this from the perspective of Customer Lifetime Value (CLV). Charging a one-time fee based on historic CLV data, IMO, has three advantages: 1. Customers perceive the indefinite nature of recurring payments more expensive than a one-time fixed fee, 2. I'll have more cash upfront, and 3. I'll make more from customers that might have unsigned up long before the average CLV point.

Dan, your work is very impressive & inspiring.

Where do you host your apps?

Mumbai, India. Married with a 17 month old daughter. Home owner.

Would be interesting to get your take on "freedom" since you've qualified it with "perceived". Time and location independence is one of the biggest reasons I went solo.

It's big enough for me to make decent money and growing all the time. If you use Shopify's billing system they take 20%.

I've written the popular PHP client adapter for the Shopify API (http://wiki.shopify.com/Making_A_Shopify_App#.E2.80.9CI.E2.8...). If you need any help with getting started with Shopify, feel free to get in touch with me.
