samwise··on Bitcoin’s roller-coaster ride gets wilder as Wall Street, China climb on
I would check out https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Scalability . In the paper published by "Satoshi Nakamoto" he detailed a technique called pruning in which old transactions that can longer affect other transactions are drop from the blockchain
samwise··on Is Wine Bullshit?
i'm pretty sure it's grapes
samwise··on Google Introduces Same-Day Shipping to Compete With eBay and Amazon
It's not free if you have fork over $80. But nonetheless a great service.
samwise··on Kevin Rose Will Join Google
let's give credit where credit is due.

Kevin is an successful angel investor and an influencer in the techs space. Not to mention that every company that he has worked with have nothing but good things to say about him.

Google currently employees more than 20,000 people. I'm sure at this point they have plenty of engineers. A couple guys with some sense of design will not hurt the bottom line but have huge potential to add some much needed polish to Google's social initiatives.

/2 cents

samwise··on Woman removes SIM card from smart energy meter, uses $193k of 3G data
Let me pose this question.

If the damages were $2 and not $200,000 would you still think an 18 month sentence is justified ?

I would guess that most people would think not.

So the true cost of the damage is a significant factor in assessing the appropriate punishment

samwise··on Google, Facebook take France to court over privacy
I'm curious as to the benefits of having an actual presence in France.

i highly doubt Google will comply. The only possible out come i see is Google setting up shop outside France's jurisdiction.

samwise··on [dead]
This is my first project as a business guy turned developer. Any feedback would be appreciated.
samwise··on Google Tried To Buy Path For $100+ Million. Path Said No.
That's an insane offer for such a young company.

I guess the team turned it down in the hopes Path will be many times the offer. I just don't see how an iPhone app can worth more than $120 million. I think the most successful app would be angry birds, but i doubt even the most optimistic valuation would put them over one billion.

samwise··on Y Combinator’s Paul Graham On The $150K Per Start-Up Offer
even though pg says "there’s no reason for companies to turn it down"

There would be an advantage to being the only company not to accept the funds. i imagine the press and standing out in the herd might be well worth passing on the 150k.

Plus i think others angles and VCs will through money at you knowing you turned down the easy money.

samwise··on Google: Bing Is Cheating, Copying Our Search Results
not sure why i'm being downvoted. if you don't agree leave a reply.

it's very discouraging

samwise··on Google: Bing Is Cheating, Copying Our Search Results
The real question should be why is Google not doing this. Bing seems to be learning from what results users choose and improving their results.

Seems like a no brainer, unless i missed something.

I also really like this for some reason. It's very ... gangster. Shows that bing is scrappy and willing to bend the rules.

That being said, i will still continue using Google.

samwise··on Egypt shuts down Al Jazeera bureau

samwise··on Egypt shuts down Al Jazeera bureau
The English arm of Al Jazeera is based in Washington DC
samwise··on Yuri Milner, SV Angel Offer Every New Y Combinator Startup $150k
$150,000 in convertible debt. With no cap and no discount.

I suspect all 40 companies will take the money on those terms. You would be crazy not to.

samwise··on How To Make Money On the Internet
Surprisingly i found that flowchart somewhat informative.
samwise··on This (very basic) website is hosted on an alarm clock
It's more like a web server that runs an alarm clock. The Chumby has the computing power of web servers 10 years ago.
samwise··on Ask HN: Is it wise to build products on twitters API?
seems to be a trend, thanks for the link
samwise··on Craigslist blocks Yahoo Pipes
Their data? The data should belong to the people that produce the content Not the people that host it.

Craigslist gains value from it's users not they other way around.

samwise··on Web 2.0, Revenue Models and Profitability: A Web 1.0 Comparison
I was gonna make the same comment. Since when was web 2.0 (hairs goes up on back) about 3 companies.

If you need a real example of lean companies look no further than YC companies.

samwise··on Death To The Embargo
I personally like all the writers at TC having worked with most of them in the past. They never broke an embargo and we're quick to response to any requests i had. The same can't be said for #%@&*& (name redacted to protect the guilty).

You just have to be clever and give each blog a different angle to cover. You also have to approach different blogs every now and then rather hitting up the same source each time.

samwise··on Citigroup buys Wachovia
FDIC is a joke. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FDIC

Just because you're insured up 100k doesn't mean the 100k will be worth that much when you get it. Printing money and giving it to people doesn't fix the problem. color me cynical

samwise··on Apple stock plunging, Google stock diving, Yahoo stock melting
also as the dollar become inflated holding, i would rather hold shares than currency. i would also get my hands on some GLD
samwise··on $700bn Bailout is shot down by House of Rep Vote (205-228), US stock market plummets
People assume that 1.2 trillion was lost(stock market). However that money still exists, just the ownership has changed. Today was probably the largest transfer of wealth ever.

In my opinion this is a good thing. You can't have unchecked growth forever. You need to have a downturn to jolt consumer confidence and investor confidence.

samwise··on Ask HN: What would you do with $700 Billion?
hehe

I would invest it. I would buy most of wall street and wait for it to bounce back. Turn that 700b to 10 trillion.

samwise··on Richard Dawkins' jaw-dropping talk on our bizarre universe
wow
samwise··on Ask HN: Feedback on my new web app please
i really like the idea. I like it so much that a few months back we launched a similar product. Check out POPrl.com you can also view stats (http://poprl.com/stats/0Kb) among other features. I would love to work together if you're interested.
samwise··on App Store: I'm out
Their tune will change in a couple months when android comes out.
samwise··on Track in detail who clicks on your links
Pushed out this feature today. Wanted some feedback and traffic from the community.
samwise··on Android FTW
Well put Matt. I agree 100%. It will be interesting to see if Steve Jobs learned his lesson.
