samwhiteUK··on Code golfing a tiny demo using maths and a pinch of insanity
Unbelievably cool, well done!
samwhiteUK··on A bug saved the company
15 days/15 minutes is not a coincidence at all. They were both present in v1.5. For 15 days, usage was unlimited. After day 15, recordings were limited to 15 minutes.

In v1.6, the 15 days was inadvertently removed. This meant that the 15 minute limit was in effect from day 0.

samwhiteUK··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
Exactly this. I want a big toggle that I can turn on in developer settings (perhaps make it more involved than that, but you get the gist) that says "I acknowledge that from here on in I am responsible for my data and I hereby absolve Google and other interested parties from responsibility should I blah blah blah..."

Why the hell can't I use my rooted device for payments? It's my goddamn money at risk.

samwhiteUK··on The hamburger-menu icon today: Is it recognizable?
That Newsweek one would have had me stumped for a little, I think. I like to think I'm pretty tech-savvy, but not knowing Newsweek, that looks a little bit like a logo to me. I think I would assume that was going to take me to the homepage and avoid it.
samwhiteUK··on How to find exploits in video games
I remember using CWCheat on PSP in the WWE games to create my own custom modes, adding ladders to Royal Rumble etc. Great fun

samwhiteUK··on Show HN: A simple ChatGPT prompt builder
Is this a joke? Am I about to get whooshed?
samwhiteUK··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
Thank you. That answers the question I had which was, "why does trying to get the portal page return a load of data about the plane?"
samwhiteUK··on Show HN: GPT Joke Writer
A British man and a Polish man enter a bar. The Polish guy says, "Do you know what they call a beer in Poland?" "No," says the Brit. "They call it a fucking beer."
samwhiteUK··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
I want to pay 100% of the price, otherwise I'm overpaying.
samwhiteUK··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
' “Tipping is about making sure the people who are performing that service for you are getting paid what they’re owed,” said Schenker, who’s been working in the service industry for roughly 18 years. '

Shouldn't that be the employer's job? I'm not exaggerating when I say this tipping culture is a major reason why I wouldn't move the US. It's ridiculous.

samwhiteUK··on Lights have been on at this school for a year because no one can turn them off
The lighting and sockets should be on separate circuits.
samwhiteUK··on Wobbly clock
They only jump between markers, and only when they will tick to the next marker. Watch for longer.
samwhiteUK··on Inky Impression 5.7“ – Colour e-ink display for Raspberry Pi
Grabbed one of these a few weeks ago to make a calendar that syncs to Google Calendar. Will be a fun project
samwhiteUK··on Ask HN: Why are bookmarks second class citizens in browsers?
Firefox allows tags
samwhiteUK··on Show HN: I made a web-based notepad with a built in unit calculator
A spreadsheet won't automatically work out and display units for you
samwhiteUK··on Switcher (2004)
200 lines a day is ridiculous. A good programmer isn't just someone who writes a lot of code. I'd rather hire someone who writes 3 lines a day, but fixes bugs on the way, than someone who writes 200 lines without proper testing, leaving others to fix the mess. Lines of code is a terrible metric.
samwhiteUK··on Man who built ISP instead of paying Comcast $50K expands to hundreds of homes
I'm going to put my hand up and say I have absolutely no idea how an ISP works. He runs cables to each house in the area... now where does the other end go?
samwhiteUK··on “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”
There you go talking about the US again and assuming it represents the whole world. You Americans are so bad for that.
samwhiteUK··on Whose breath are you breathing?
I assume it's meant to be AC
samwhiteUK··on Show HN: Tuc – When cut doesn’t cut it
When I want to use negative indices, I pipe the string through rev first, then do my cut, then rev again
samwhiteUK··on Find a good available .com domain
Why wouldn't it?
samwhiteUK··on I only care about the helpful notifications, not the promotional ones
> like if there was an option when long-pressing the app on the home screen to quickly enable or disable notifications

Nice idea

samwhiteUK··on Don't use text pixelation to redact sensitive information
Same on Firefox on Linux
samwhiteUK··on NitroPhone 2/Pro with 4.5 years of software updates
Does anyone actually buy these things?
samwhiteUK··on This Sneaker Does Not Exist
Only real shoes would be shipped...
samwhiteUK··on The House That Vanished
Right? It's not "vanished" at all. There's a fucking photo of the ruins
samwhiteUK··on ISO 8601: a better date format
This is mentioned in the article....
samwhiteUK··on GNOME has no thumbnails in the file picker and my toilets are blocked
I've noticed this problem on XFCE, and using i3, and I always just assumed it's because I hadn't installed a proper alternative, and was just using the defaults. I'm ashamed to say I'm part of the problem :( I didn't realise it was like this on arguably the main Linux DE though. That's awful.
samwhiteUK··on TabFS: Mount your Browser Tabs as a Filesystem
