samirahmed··on Map: Income Taxes by US County
It appears that Teton County Wyoming is the county that pays the most on average at 67k.

Does anybody have any insight into why that is? For the most part i understand that high taxes in the more populous and economically prosperous zones but why a county in Wyoming?

edit: From the nested link

> "In addition, some counties that host popular ski resorts—such as Pitkin County, CO (which contains the city of Aspen) and Teton County, WY (which contains Jackson Hole)—also have notably high income tax burdens."

samirahmed··on Google Acquires Boston Dynamics
Just to clarify, I agree with you that any company that is funded by the military is technically a military contracter. But the term has deeply negative connotation.

Anybody who is involved with DARPA funded research. In this case it might be a little easier to the see the parallels between a robot and a war machine.

The Internet itself was a DARPA funded, as was GPS and they can both be seen as tools in war at least as this was there initial intent.

So while that does classify those who worked on them as military contractors, it is important to understand that its not necessarily a negative label and the benefits are sometimes felt years onwards after the military tech trickles down.

samirahmed··on Show HN: Watson – inline issue manager with GitHub support
Yea i wonder how he made those gifs. It would be interested in a js gif gallery library like that
samirahmed··on GitHub's Explore Email
this is exactly what i do too.

Another great person to follow is Ilya Grigorik ... https://github.com/igrigorik

He spents a lot of time following repos, and literally built the github archive just to keep up with this.

samirahmed··on Facebook Premium
Honestly, the idea of a facebook subscription is not a new idea, nor is it a feasible idea. It is something people have discussed on HN about for years now. Not to mention $10 a month is unrealistic in every developing country where roughly 40% of facebooks users are based (brazil, india, indonesia ...)
samirahmed··on Amazon India is now live
Interestingly amazon is in the backseat here and it will be interesting to see how they succeed. From my understanding http://www.flipkart.com/ is the dominant player in the online shopping marketing in India
samirahmed··on Amazon plans major move into grocery business
As a seattle resident who lived here a year ago and moved back again. I have a few things to add to this ...

1. Amazon Fresh prices one year ago were pretty high, they have driven costs down on everything except produce.

2. I live close to a City Target and have been avoiding Amazon Fresh because I thought the target was cheaper. Yesterday I took my $100 grocery bill and recreated it on Amazon Fresh, and excluding produce, it was $89.00. I was shocked to see the prices were cheaper for most things.

3. The delivery is free for $100 purchases, so you can't use it like regular amazon (or amazon prime).

4. The delivery times range from 5 am in the morning to late in the evening.

5. The packaging is often reuse able, plastic containers or clothe-bags and so you can leave outside and the delivery folks will pickup the old packaging, this is much more sustainable than regular amazon cardboard packaging.

6. Living in a city, it is easier and cheaper to buy in bulk of Amazon Fresh, because they prefer selling in larger quantities. Some items have 2 or 4 quantity minimums. If you don't have a car this is fantastic.

samirahmed··on Visual Studio 2013
I find this response almost shocking. Most of HN criticizes microsoft for slow releases cycles, slow change but the Visual Studio has clearly made progress for the better by addressing UserVoice requests, integrating Git etc.

If your employer is to slow to keep updated, why should that slow MSFT down for you while the it is trying to reinvent itself, just catch up in 2015.

good question, its probably much broader than you would expect... I think quant would fall under

samirahmed··on A new search engine
About 1 month ago I switched from google to bing. There different queries that use the to measure 'better'.

For simple queries 'strncmp', 'giraffe', 'sound transit schedule' ... Google, Bing and Samuru perform pretty well. But Samuru is extremely slow.

For more complex queries like, 'seattle dumpling restaurant that is famous in singapore' or 'how to zip a list in ruby'. I find that Google always comes out on top, bing lacks the previous search history to personalize my searches and often thinks I mean (zip as in zipfile)... But samuru gave me relevant results for all three which is rather surprising.

Another type is one for people/social related searches... Bing's facebook/twitter/linkedin/yelp integration actually makes it better than google because the 'snapshot' bar it has is super helpful. However Samuru results are on par with Google and Bing results here (minus the snapshot bar).

Overall I was skeptical but other than it being unbearable slow (Google spoilt us with speed), Samuru does have very good search results for what I assume is not a mutlibillion dollar product.

samirahmed··on Ask HN: Features you miss
Here are a few I can think of, not all are necessarily things that I miss, but people do miss it.

- Gmail old style compose/reply dialog

- Windows 7 had a search everything feature, now windows 8 has search by App/Files/Settings

- Github used to have a downloads tab for you to upload binaries associated with your code.

- Internet Explorer 9 supported extensions (via plugins), IE 10 is plugin free (although a step forward) doesn't have any customizability (no potential ad-block / vimium)

- Twitter List functionality (it wasn't implemented well but it was useful to help separate your stream).

- OneNote- Older versions of OneNote had OCR functionality, newer ones don't, one of the reasons I prefer Evernote

samirahmed··on How to Prototype an App in 1 hour: meet POP
At a glance, this is a very creative way to fuse the best of digital prototyping with the spontaneity of hand drawn prototyping.

However I believe that digital linking and editing stages would be easier if it were on a browser than an iphone.

samirahmed··on Heroku 2X Dynos in Public Beta
But there is insufficient demand to warrant a change? But it would be technologically too demanding? But we don't think its a problem to wait 6+ seconds? But we will address this later as its not a priority?

Its great that you are aware of the issue, but it would be better if you could shed some light on why or why not this is not addressed.

samirahmed··on Choosing a Programming Language
I somewhat agree. Choosing a programming language involves only a part of the factors listed here (speed, memory, paradigm) but also community, resources, development time and available framework, tooling and libraries.

It is hard to quantify those through and stackoverflow posts and github repos are an insufficient metric

samirahmed··on Choosing a Programming Language
C# does fit many needs and molds and could be used as general purpose language of instruction. However decisions are seldom made on how 'good' a language is.

Java, C++ have plenty of free, multi-platform tooling and resources. C# requires lots of (hard to get or costly) Microsoft products and tooling like Visual Studio.

C/C++ has the additionally advantage that students are exposed to memory management issues.

Not to mention that C/C++ and Java are the top 3 languages on the KIOBE index and have been for the last decade. C# is newer than all three has risen in popularity over the last decade.

Matlab is much higher level language, usually targeted at (non computer) engineering disciplines because its is easier to learn, and provides lots of tools and libraries for simulation/computation/statistics.

samirahmed··on We call ourselves innovators, but most of us are really just iterators
out of curiosity - how did you contribute to these, through your work? open-source contribution? consulting.
samirahmed··on Dashing - A dashboard framework
It would be nice to have a github org for dashing and all its ports. That could take some of the burden of all the ports off of you.

I know its part of shopify organization now, but there is a lot of interest I know I would love to contribute to other backends as well

samirahmed··on HipChat is now free for teams of 5 users or fewer
I think this is strategically a good move, as free and Open source alternatives like Kandan would be more attractive to teams of under 5 users than a paid (even though very affordable) solution like Hipchat.
samirahmed··on Calling Vault - a private Google Voice (sort of)
was anybody else put off by the fact that it asked for money before showing you the numbers you could choose from?

Offering a proxy number like GV, means that you want to be able to choose the number you want (area code, easy to remember, similar to your current one).

perhaps this is something that only bothered me.

> "How can we trust you're not going away any time soon?"

We are hosted on DotCloud(YCS10) - and thanks to generous agreement with them, we have a very large free plan and until we have issues managing demand, we don't plan to ask for donations.

Several well known sites us zippopotam.us such as TheNounProject and Pocket.

There are several alternatives to us and if don't trust us, don't use us - our intention is to serve sites that can't be bothered to download dbs and serve the codes themselves.

samirahmed··on How adding indexes to our MongoDB really improved our perfomance
I partially agree,

I don't see how one would not find this obvious after reading the mongo docs which explicitly say

> Indexes enhance query performance, often dramatically ...

samirahmed··on Show HN: idea for the future of document editing
The real time information is neat!

FYI, This feature is available (in non-real time manner) in Google Docs and Microsoft Word, which are powered by Google Search and Bing respectively to research terms, images and relevant content.

samirahmed··on GitHub Launch Page
Thats fantastic.

However github would be better served if the github.com put the tab focus right inside the command bar. That way their would be no need for /launch at all...

samirahmed··on GitHub Launch Page
it would be incredible if the command bar could be integrated into my chrome omnibar... with the prefix github.com:

that way i could naturally use the power of the commandbar in my browser without having to go to github first
