samgranieri··on How kernel anti-cheats work
remember when Sony put a rootkit an an audio cd to prevent people from ripping the cd?
samgranieri··on How kernel anti-cheats work
I think I'll just stick to simple games on iOS/iPadOS or just use my Nintendo Switch. These anti-cheat systems are far too invasive for my liking. I also worry about those things being hacked! The last time i built a gaming pc was 20 years ago, and i was playing Doom, FEAR, and Half Life Two.. Then i did some simple gaming on macOS
samgranieri··on “Microslop” filtered in the official Microsoft Copilot Discord server
I am for my day job. I still mourn slack and gsuite.
samgranieri··on “Microslop” filtered in the official Microsoft Copilot Discord server
I’m at the point to tell people (friends, neighbors, fellow parents, family, ie, not HN readers) to prolong the life of their existing computers and install what I think is the easiest windows equivalent on their computers: kubuntu.

Gnome is nice and all, but the default ui, and remember defaults matter for a lot of people, is just too jarring.

The people I am talking about just wanna browse the web, go on Facebook and use their gmail. Look at funny YouTube videos. The default KDE ui has that windows start menu and looks roughly the same so they can hit the ground running.

samgranieri··on MinIO repository is no longer maintained
My use case for minio was simply to test out uploading things to s3 for work related apps.. I loved that web ui too.

Looks like i'm gonna give seaweedfs a whirl instead of hunting down the docker image and sha of the last pre-enshittified version of Minio

samgranieri··on Another GitHub outage in the same day
I've been a GitHub user since the very early days. I had a beta invite to the service. I really wish they didn't swap out the FE for a React FE.

They need to start rolling back some of their most recent changes.

I mean, if they want people to start moving to self hosted GitLab, this is gonna get that ball rolling.

samgranieri··on Token-to-Credit Conversion: Avoiding Floating-Point Errors in AI Billing Systems
I work in the payments industry. Just do everything in cents and divide by 100. Makes your life a lot easier.
samgranieri··on I set all 376 Vim options and I'm still a fool
I’ve been using vim and now neovim for 15 years. Before that I was using TextMate. I’ve hand written my own config. I used Janus by Carlhuda, SolarVim, and now I’m on lazyvim because Folke is a goddamn wizard and I want to spend more time getting work done that dealing with breakage in my neovim config
samgranieri··on A university got itself banned from the Linux kernel (2021)
I was honestly surprised the University of Minnesota didn’t part ways with the teacher and students who performed this bullshit research.

This level of malfeasance strikes me as something akin to plagiarism for a professional writer.

samgranieri··on A university got itself banned from the Linux kernel (2021)
This is retroactive ass covering by the UMN IRB.
samgranieri··on Apple Creator Studio
I wondered when Apple was going to do this. Seemed inevitable when Final Cut Pro on the iPad had a subscription, I think.

I hope I can still use the non subscription version of Pixelmator pro I bought

samgranieri··on Microsoft Office renamed to “Microsoft 365 Copilot app”
This rebrand will be liked less than when Gap, Cracker Barrel and Jaguar introduced new logos.

At this rate I wouldn’t put it past MSFT to rename the company and all products Copilot. Just Copilot.

samgranieri··on Show HN: BusterMQ, Thread-per-core NATS server in Zig with io_uring
This looks fairly cool. If I had the production need for this, I’d definitely consider this.

I paired with Claude and simply added nats.c to the zig buildup system for my zig project at work. It works like a charm.

samgranieri··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
have you tried using pi-hole or adblock plus running on a raspberry pi on your network?

whenever i'm off my home wifi network, i have wireguard configured to connect home and get me that ad blocking. it's so nice.

yes, i prefer to use brave for personal stuff and i use edge for work stuff (reasons,,, don't ask)

samgranieri··on 30 years of <br> tags
Wow. This is an incredible article that tracks just about everything I’ve done with the web over the past 30 years. I started with BbEdit and Adobe PageMill, then went to dreamweaver for Lamp.
samgranieri··on Open-source Zig book
As someone who is diving deep into Zig, I’m actually going to evaluate all this (and compare this to Ziglings) or the Zig track on Exercism.
samgranieri··on YouTube is taking down videos on performing nonstandard Windows 11 installs
Or GNU / Systemd / Linux
samgranieri··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
I'm not a pythonista, and the most recent time I've been playing with python has been using octodns. origninally I was using a pip setup, and honestly wow UV was so much faster.

I'm very happy the python community has better tooling.

samgranieri··on A Mac-like experience on Linux
I’m enjoying using Kubuntu. Yes it runs on Wayland.
samgranieri··on A Mac-like experience on Linux
I’ve been using Linux on and off for the past two weeks for software dev. Tried Omarchy, but tiling managers aren’t my cup of tea. I tried gnome, but it felt like I was using an iPad at first. Put on some extensions, but it still didn’t feel right to me. Ive been using KDE Plasma and it seems like a good working environment.
samgranieri··on macOS Tahoe
I think I’m going to stick with the previous version of macOS on my work laptop until I’m forced to upgrade.
samgranieri··on Vibe coding has turned senior devs into 'AI babysitters'
As an experienced dev who’s gotten his feet wet a little with AI, I feel like , and does anyone else feel this way, that I spend more time telling AI what to do than it would spend actually writing this all out myself?
samgranieri··on macOS Tahoe is certified Unix 03 [pdf]
Homebrew is pretty nice. I think it's better than Fink (mac DPKG), and MacPorts (mac Freebsd-based). I'm actually using homebrew right now on ubuntu 25 for a few packages that I don't feel like compiling from source or installing from some random PPA or apt source.

All that being said, I've spent some time on Arch, and I really like pacman and the AUR setup. And all that documentation is just amazing. I really didn't understand systemd before I read the archwiki article on it.

SystemD I think was a bit inspired by Launchd.

samgranieri··on How RSS beat Microsoft
I’ve been using the internet since 1995 and I’ve never even heard of ICE. Crazy
samgranieri··on From M1 MacBook to Arch Linux: A month-long experiment that became permanenent
You can run Asahi Linux nicely on Apple Silicon
samgranieri··on Arch shares its wiki strategy with Debian
I'm nix curious, and yeah, it's a bit of a challenge.
samgranieri··on Arch shares its wiki strategy with Debian
I"m still absolutely floored with how good the archwiki is. I can't hype it up enough. I really did't know what I was doing with systemd until I read that wonderful article, and also, the link to why the arch maintainer switched that distro to systemd made my accept the change to it.
samgranieri··on Nginx introduces native support for ACME protocol
I use dns01 in my homelab with step-ca with caddy. It's a joy to use
samgranieri··on Nginx introduces native support for ACME protocol
This is a good first start. One less moving part. They should match caddy for feature parity on this, and also add dns01 challenges as well.

I'm not using nginx these days because of this.

samgranieri··on Omarchy, a Linux Distribution by DHH
I'd probably call this an Arch Linux setup instead. A curated set of configs. Kind of like how i'm using LazyVim instead of rolling my own NeoVim configuration these days
