samgranieri··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
My understanding is that Apple has this culture of we must ship things by this date no matter what. They really should slow down and make sure things are fully baked before they get out to the final RC.

Golden Gate works pretty well so far for me.

samgranieri··on Alternatives to MinIO for single-node local S3
I might have to try this. I’m currently pinned on the last non-crippled version of minio
samgranieri··on iPhone Duo
I'll pass on this. Less moving parts appeals to me. I'm sure the HW and SW engineers at Apple did a great job, but, i like the current form factor.
samgranieri··on Antiquated HTML Snippets and Artefacts
Oh this is so much fun. Takes me back to the days I built out a scraper for a daily deal intelligence website.

I literally saw daily deals that were microsoft word files saved as HTML. Ugh.

samgranieri··on Illinois just passed a law that puts Linux on the hook for age verification
It’s a series of tubes! It’s not a big truck!
samgranieri··on John C. Dvorak has died
This is sad. I grew up with him as a columnist in like MacWorld or MacUser, to later on see him become an Apple troll. I think he broke his hand off patting himself on the back after his prediction of Apple moving to Intel chips came to fruition.

I was sad when he got fired from PC Mag over that 5g column.

samgranieri··on TLS certificates for internal services done right
Split horizon DNS is not something I'm willing to do. I'll just rock out with .internal or .home.arpa, have step-ca and bind communicate to each other, either in step-issuer in kube or maybe even rfc2136 if i feel like a bit of the dns-01 strategy is in order. I slap the internal ca root certs everywhere, and keep my home infra out of the crt.sh logs.

I get it, I could just do *.mydomain.com and slap that wildcard cert everywhere, but it's still in the public logs..

samgranieri··on Copy That Floppy – Cambridge guide for preserving data from fragile floppy disks
Heh. Copy that floppy. I remember being in the computer labs in high school in the mid to late 90s seeing posters saying "Don't copy that floppy" with strong anti-piracy warnings.
samgranieri··on Apple to increase spend with Broadcom to produce billions more U.S. chips
yes, I was complaining about grammar
samgranieri··on Apple to increase spend with Broadcom to produce billions more U.S. chips
What is with the phrase "increase spend"? It just seems gramatically .... off. Why not say "Apple partners with Broadcom to produce billions more US chips".
samgranieri··on Show HN: Davit, a Apple Containers UI
I can’t speak about orbstack, but I’ve worked with docker desktop and podman desktop for years on macOS. Those programs start up a virtual machine that consistently eats ram regardless of whether or not you are running containers in it. Apple container looks lighter weight. In the age of ridiculous ram costs, you gotta save resources.
samgranieri··on Show HN: Pglayers – PostgreSQL extensions as stackable Docker layers
This is fantastic, i was thinking of something just like this
samgranieri··on European ISPs Want Rightsholders Held Accountable for Overblocking Damage
The sheer amount of internet disruption that goes on in Spain during soccer matches is just absolutely insane. People who pay for internet service and use it responsibly should not have their service disrupted by people pirating soccer matches. I can’t imagine the investors of the internet companies in Spain are happy about this either.
samgranieri··on .self: A new top-level domain designed to support self-hosting
I’m just using .home.arpa for my self hosted stuff. Free, just have to deal with TLS root cert trust, but once that’s down; you’re golden.
samgranieri··on Epic Games announces Lore version control system
How about the last pre-enshittified version of Minio?
samgranieri··on Lore – Open source version control system designed for scalability
I may not be the first to bring this up, but seeing the name of this program reminds me of Data’s evil brother
samgranieri··on Anthropic, please ship an official Claude Desktop for Linux
I'm game for this, please start with Ubuntu
samgranieri··on Mechanical Pencil: An illustrated celebration of the engineering around us
I was literally about to submit a mechanical watch as an example to the site im them submission, then i remembered I read the site you just linked to. My kid was amazed at all the gears and stuff in my mechanical watch
samgranieri··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
A 16 year boy apparently named his Bluetooth speaker “bomb” and couldn’t turn it off, as it was probably in checked luggage. Woof.
samgranieri··on It Will Never Be the Year of the Linux Desktop
macos26 is just one big UI regression. Ugh.. so much wasted screenspace.
samgranieri··on Nitpicking the shell history scene in 'Tron: Legacy'
don't stop there....
samgranieri··on Days without GitHub incidents
GitHub is not a monopoly. It never has been. You've always been able to self-host or you can use gogs, gitea, gitlab, bitbucket, you get the idea
samgranieri··on Why TUIs are back
I really wish that 1Password wasn’t an electron app. Or Spotify. (Maybe I should just use Spotify in the browser).

We need to advocate and evangelize for native apps, like RapidApi on macOS and also Tower.

samgranieri··on Why TUIs Are Back
I spend all day in a terminal multiplexer (zellij) with neovim and other splits. Using things like k9s / btop / lazygit / lazydocker helm / stern / whatever that systemd TUI I saw in here and started and will check out later just keeps me focused in one window, and that’s pretty cool
samgranieri··on Tell HN: Docker pull fails in Spain due to football Cloudflare block
This is inexcusable. Just because sports right holders are worried about piracy doesn’t give them license to break normal internet operations. Spain, get your act together and put your equivalent of the content cartel in the penalty box.
samgranieri··on Nanobrew: The fastest macOS package manager compatible with brew
I think Max Howell created Homebrew. I think McQuaid is the current maintainer
samgranieri··on Cockpit is a web-based graphical interface for servers
Sometimes I like a web page to bring information to me rather than having to go on a command line use those tools to find the data I want. YMMV.
samgranieri··on Cockpit is a web-based graphical interface for servers
I use this in my homelab. I really appreciate the systemd logging functionality in Cockpit.

It’s miles away from like Webmin, which I used god knows how long ago.

samgranieri··on macOS 26 breaks custom DNS settings including .internal
I used to use dnsmasq and etc/resolvers for stuff like dot dev or dit whatever back in the day.

These days I’m just using Caddy to do ..localhost for my web dev and it works like a charm.

This is exceptionally sloppy on Apple’s part.

samgranieri··on AirPods Max 2
I really enjoy my AirPods Max. nice and seamless and good audio and good noise cancellation. Now, I also have a Schiit stack with HD6xx or the AKG k371s when I want to some serious listening. But these Apple cans work just fine and sound great. If the current pair I have gets destroyed then I’ll think about getting a new pair.
