samcgraw··on What I Worked On
> I wrote what beginning writers were supposed to write then, and probably still are: short stories.

This is a bit tangential, but if anyone is finding themselves in a similar spot and looking to sharpen their short story writing, I built a site called Storylocks [1] - it's a collaborative fiction app for aspiring authors to write serialized fiction just for fun.

samcgraw··on React created roadblocks in our enterprise app
> And I am not even considering the time that each developer spends on learning all those third-party libraries. I never saw two React projects with the same dependencies, project structure, and guidelines. This means the knowledge is not transferable from project to project, as can be the case in Angular or Vue.

For a developer just looking to make the thing their design team sent them as quickly as possible, this makes good sense to me. And I get that project/file structures can be wildly jarring to an uninitiated dev - I remember looking through a Java repo for the first time :shudders:

But! Isn’t there a necessary step of understanding why decisions were made the way they were? In my experience as a front-end eng, even if a previous project involves other-worldly dependencies or FS compared to the one I’m on now, if I understand the trade-offs of the approaches for the previous project, no amount of knowledge is untransferable.

samcgraw··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
A collaborative creative writing platform called Storylocks: https://storylocks.com?source=hn

Every story on Storylocks is a serial; chapters are crowdsourced and the top-rated gets inducted into the larger story. I wanted to create a platform that lets creative writers / hobbyists contribute to larger communal & ongoing stories, but without the pressure of having to write an entire novel on their shoulders.

samcgraw··on Show HN: Storylocks – Write serial fiction with friends
Hey there HN, Shane here. Really excited to share what we've been working on!

Storylocks is a collaborative, chapter-based writing platform inspired by the choose-your-own-adventure books we read as kids. We wanted to create a platform that lets creative writers / hobbyists contribute to larger communal & ongoing stories, but without the pressure of having to write an entire novel on their shoulders.

There are plenty of other writing platforms out there, but we set out to create one that has a more collaborative approach from the get-go. If you like it, feel free to sign up and create a story - maybe pen the first chapter too :) Cheers!

samcgraw··on Tools and Services I Use to Run My SaaS
Neat! I'll check these out. Thanks!

Interesting to find Yarn over npm on this list - curious as to the reasons for this decision?

Back before npm had package.lock files I was completely on board, but since npm anted up I've struggled to find reasons to go back to Yarn.

samcgraw··on To write better, develop a habit of writing
Bit of a shameless plug, but I started a project for people (like myself) looking to get better at fiction writing through practice in collaborative storytelling: https://storylocks.com
samcgraw··on Beg the Question
> It would be as though people started using "the die is cast" to mean dying, simply because the word "die" is in there, without any knowledge of Caesar. Is there any idiom -- not a single word, but a full phrase -- whose meaning has changed over the years, simply by virtue of its being misunderstood by the linguistically inept or the historically ignorant?

Ironically enough, Caesar’s quote of Menander likely meant “this crossing of the Rubicon is a roll of the dice”, or “let the dice be thrown”, not that his crossing is setting in motion the irrevocable. So there’s that.

samcgraw··on Ask HN: You've got $300 to fill an empty library. What do you choose?
Edited- apologies for the vagueness :) Thank you!
samcgraw··on Astrophysicists detect the strongest magnetic field in the universe
My thoughts exactly. The title should be updated to reflect this (I was expecting some sort of theoretical limit to a magnetic field).
samcgraw··on Ask HN: Why do some people have a keybase info in their HN profiles?
Oh I see- thank you very much!
samcgraw··on Single Page Applications using Rust
Other than 10% of the globe unable to run wasm, what accessibility concerns come to mind here? Are there any that wouldn't also apply to a SPA that uses JS to manage the DOM?
samcgraw··on Elevator.js – A “back to top” button that behaves like a real elevator
Came here to say this. Vimium is excellent! I've been using it for the last number of years and when I switch to a new computer without it, I still fire off the `gg` and wonder why the browser isn't picking it up. It's essential to me at this point.
samcgraw··on Ask HN: What did you make during lockdown?
Thanks for sharing this! During the lockdown I shipped "Storylocks"; it's a place for fiction authors to write stories together in a serialized format.

Let me know what you think!

samcgraw··on Show HN: Turn your fancy, expensive computer into a stupid typewriter
I've enjoyed writing short (mostly ghost) stories for friends and family over the last number of years, but I've never considered going for something like 50K words (and as a runner, I did appreciate the analogy!) until now. Thank you for sharing this!

This might be a bit tangential, but over the last few months I've been working on a collaborative writing project called Storylocks (https://www.storylocks.com) to make writing practice more fun and be able to riff on other writers' ideas. Excited to see more applications in the creative writing space coming out of the woodwork!

samcgraw··on Ask HN: What interesting stuff are you browsing?
Plug for a website I built to combat against this very 'loop' I too was experiencing.

It's a site for collaborative fiction through writing prompts, if you like reading or writing: https://www.storylocks.com

samcgraw··on Ask HN: Why do you still use HN?
Interestingly enough, I just saw this the other day posted on HN: https://www.journalduhacker.net/
samcgraw··on Ask HN: Best place to start learning about Markov Chains?
Well said ;)
samcgraw··on Microsoft is Dead (2007)
Not to mention LinkedIn :)
samcgraw··on Ask HN: How does the Washington Post paywall get around Chrome's incognito mode?
I cannot repro either. Could it be that you have another minimized / hidden incognito window on your desktop? The two windows could share client state.
