salzig··on Ask HN: What macOS apps/programs do you use daily and recommend?
yabal requires quite some privileges. Did you check out https://github.com/nikitabobko/AeroSpace ?

salzig··on Make timelapses easily using FFmpeg
Just dropping this "random" ffmpeg command here, as a reminder that you can turn video files into actual transparent webm using

    ffmpeg -t 5 -i example.mp4 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -b:v 2M -filter_complex "[0:v]chromakey=0x00ff00:0.3:0.2[out]" -map "[out]" -map 0:a stop.webm`
where `example.mp4` is a video with the typical green background.

Maybe someone needs it :)

salzig··on BlackHole: macOS Audio Loopback Driver
Last time I checked QuickTime was still not able to. Did I miss something?
salzig··on Ask HN: How do people create those sleek looking demos for startups?
Free like QuickTime to Record/Capture Screen contents and iMovie to modify the material?
salzig··on Show HN: Open-source alternative to HashiCorp/IBM Vault
Swarm mode is IMHO underrated.
salzig··on Shutting down the letsblock.it project and its official instance
No, sadly.
salzig··on A decent VS Code and Ruby on Rails setup
50+ Devs working on a single project/codebase tend to get messy/chaotic. I don't think it's worth blaming this on Ruby/Rails.

Over time I learned that Ruby and Rails are as told easy to learn, but sadly you'll need some time to master the Language/Framework. And the difference is quite big and easy to overlook once you do.

salzig··on The day I canceled my Spotify subscription
Spotify did a good job until lately. Apple is quite unusable for me, since they can't distinguish between me and my partner - whoever starts something on a HomePod, it's done with my account. We tried to reset Siri often, but gave up on it.

Another downside is the ~4000 Songs shared Spotify Playlist with some friends&co-workers which is not available on Apple Music, and sadly they make it (IMHO) ridiculous hard to import Playlists from other Platforms.

salzig··on The day I canceled my Spotify subscription
Not sure what Spotify does, but I gets worse in all kind of different aspects. I don't take a look at the start page anymore, just noise. I hear quite diverse Music genre, so it was quite nice that Spotify has Mix-Tapes so I could randomly pick one or the other. Release-Radar was a cool mix of new stuff. But lately it feels like they are pushing only on genre.

Verschlimmbessern at its best.

salzig··on ElixirNitpicks
For me it would be the Pin-Operator. Which is only needed cause variables can "mutate". IMHO it's not that common that we need to "reassign" variables, we could life without the looks-like-reassignment.

I touched Erlang before, it's hard to get my brain to accept elixir is different in regards of variables :)

salzig··on Ask HN: Are height adjustable desks worth it?
It's kinda nice to use one, but I hate the fact that we burn energy to burn energy.

I would like to see more (and maybe cheaper) options/alternatives for manual operated walking pads like the Walkolution [0] or Nohrd SprintBok [1] (which seems to be a Chinese white label [2])

salzig··on Microsoft limits institutional cloud storage space for environmental reasons
I'm a bit confused. 20GB? Not TB?
salzig··on Ask HN: How can I make local dev with containers hurt less?
Same for me. Locally I try to use asdf-vm for handling different versions of stuff needed.
salzig··on SSH over HTTPS
Thats what was/is what protonet used/s while marking the boxes available via $randomTLd but also making it accessible for support or „special services“.

Always nice to see these kind of „missiues“ ;)

salzig··on PHP 8.3
at least it's part of the example to spot it :)
salzig··on PHP 8.3
I've worked at a php3+php4+php5 (three generation of source code, in a single repository) + Java Application in the past. I'll never miss that time :)
salzig··on PHP 8.3
you mean like https://www.caucho.com/resin-3.1/doc/quercus.xtp?
salzig··on Discouraging the use of web application firewalls
That sounds like hell, not sure if should count this as „blocked“ or more as a „I ignore them, but I need follow enterprise BS policy so they end up blocked“
salzig··on Discouraging the use of web application firewalls
I count this as „I ignore them“
salzig··on Discouraging the use of web application firewalls
How do you handle requests with obvious malicious intend like „/wp-admin/„ on a Java service?

Do you ignore these kind of mass/spam requests? Do you block those requests? I‘m curious.

salzig··on HTML Web Components
Does HTML kinda look like XML? Yes.
salzig··on Apple unveils M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max
That one, and Sketchup really confused me.

Looks like the pain was big enough.

salzig··on Show HN: Obligator – An OpenID Connect server for self-hosters
Reminds me of https://github.com/dexidp/dex
salzig··on Kata Containers: The speed of containers, the security of VMs
Even VM will need an IP-address-space shared with the host so you can access them.

That’s not a docker/container problem.

Btw, you‘re able to configure the Ip-space to use by passing an argument to the daemon or change it in daemon.json.

salzig··on Show HN: E-Ink Day Schedule
> Privacy Information: Plese note that the data is proxied through the Invisible Computers API backend and a non-reversible hash of most recent image is stored for up to 48 hours.

Wait? It's always proxied through your service? So there is no way to show something on the screen without you also being able to see it? That's a big nope for me.

salzig··on Unix shells are generally not viable access control mechanisms any more
For a port-forward with `-N` on client side.

Besides that, I don’t know.

salzig··on Unix shells are generally not viable access control mechanisms any more
It’s always interesting to find people who don’t know about `-N` („Do not execute a remote command. This is useful for just forwarding ports.“[0]), which was quite neat to access the MySQL on the same host (with no root database Passwort, duh) at one of my previous employers.

salzig··on iOS 17 sideloading support is coming, and Apple can’t stop it
Unless the seller has different licenses for different OS. Something about justifying the investment for that platform.
