saltedonion··on Apple expands independent repair program to Mac after US antitrust investigation
Apple can can certainly limit the scope of use for the data collection for quality assurance only. But it’s probably worded much more broadly.
saltedonion··on California sues Cisco alleging discrimination based on India’s caste system
Will this be a precedent setting case?
saltedonion··on Call it the ‘boss tax:’ Seattle finally finds a potent way to tax the rich
I suspect that the tax will actually be born by the corps. They would still need to pay their employees competitively to attract talent, so the only option this have is to boost pay proportionally to the tax.
saltedonion··on American businesses have the power to change China’s behavior
Nope. Hackernews is an leftist ideological echo chamber and I love it.
saltedonion··on American businesses have the power to change China’s behavior
I will explain. Hackernews is a leftist ideological echo chamber. If you scroll through this thread you’ll notice downvoted posts don’t even get a good reply as to why they’re wrong.

The down-voters are hurt and clueless.

saltedonion··on American businesses have the power to change China’s behavior
That’s not the real problem. The real problem is By leaving America is doing charity work. Another player from another country is just going to fill in the void. The idea of voluntary exit is as good as we should all be model citizens.

Indeed an idea as good as communism. It’s beautiful on paper.

saltedonion··on American businesses have the power to change China’s behavior
This article is incredibly ignorant, and is more of the same realities detached day dreaming that the left likes to partake.

Why should American businesses voluntarily abandon an sizable overseas market and supply chain when China keeps getting access to our home market? In effect, placing a punitive tariff over our own heads and puts our American firms at a competitive disadvantage over our European and Chinese counterparts? Why should such a tax be born by the American corporation, workers and taxpayers?

If America has decided to decouple from China, then the solution should be legislative as it creates a level playing field for all firms involved, such that no one in particular is punished by a voluntary withdraw.

The saving grace is I believe world leaders are aware of this “you withdraw you loose” dilemma and are starting to cooperate to form a unified front against China. Donald Trump did well in waking the world up against the Chinese threat, but I’m afraid we now need a diplomat to finish the war.

saltedonion··on A researcher on how to live a happy life
Very insightful. Please share more.

I’ve been taking up meditation and bubiddism but still very much a novice. I find that as you open your mind and see through more things, in a way things gets less interesting. It’s that feeling that you’ve seen this movie before. Maybe this is normal for older people but I’m in my 20s and it feels very odd.

How do you deal with that and not feel like a zombie.

saltedonion··on A Google bot scrapes pricing info by adding items to carts
It matter because if you purchase multiple things your average shipping cost per item changes. If you only calculate shipping based on first item shipping cost it will be inaccurate.
saltedonion··on India bans TikTok, WeChat, and dozens of other Chinese apps
You have a good point. But TikTok is much more risky, and as as such requires much more scrutiny given existing body of knowledge between how chinese social media / chat companies such as WeChat enforce government censorship and aid in propagating misinformation.

This might be a shock to most people in the western world, but if you go on almost ANY news website in china, the headline news is dedicated to government propaganda.

The reality is that Chinese firms and government operates together intimately. Nearly all sizable firms have a party secretary that is involved in board level decisions, and steps in when things get political. You can ponder who has the final say.

saltedonion··on India bans TikTok, WeChat, and dozens of other Chinese apps
Might be a form of shifting the narrative and scapegoating for sure. But you have to admit that recent events have outlined a significant shift in Indian-Sino foreign policy. I don’t see this being reversed any time soon.
saltedonion··on India bans TikTok, WeChat, and dozens of other Chinese apps
India is absolutely right in banning TikTok as it is a significant national securities threat.

As long as the platforms recommendation and ranking algos are a black box, there is no guarantee that China isn’t conducting misinformation campaigns via the platform.

At the very least, the government should audit the algos and make sure China can’t arbitrarily alter ranking results.

saltedonion··on India bans TikTok, WeChat, and dozens of other Chinese apps
Tiktok can be a huge threat because their recommendation algorithms are black box. This makes them capable of controlling how potentially dangerous information is disseminated in the United States, including topics influencing elections.
saltedonion··on Lemmy, an open-source federated Reddit alternative, gets funding for development
Um. CSS isn’t loading on safari mobile. I hope this isn’t the actual experience ?
saltedonion··on Comcast, Mozilla strike privacy deal to encrypt DNS lookups in Firefox
Why can’t mozilla roll out a encrypted dns service in a form of a browser setting or plugin? Does the browser not have control over how the dns is resolved ?
saltedonion··on Inside eBay’s bizarre campaign against a blog critic
Stories like this makes me wonder if episodes such as this one are much more prevalent than we hear.
saltedonion··on Microsoft duplicates data from Firefox without asking
So Microsoft no longer has a strong foothold in the browser market and shit like this is no longer considered anti-competitive?
saltedonion··on I Am Deleting the Blog
Can someone tell this person that this site is probably still on way back machine? And he or she should request it to be removed.
saltedonion··on Microsoft is shutting down Mixer and partnering with Facebook Gaming
What’s preventing streamers from streaming to multiple platforms at once. Is it against he Eula or something ?
saltedonion··on Reverse Engineering Snapchat (Part II): Debofuscating the Undeobfuscatable
Very interesting. I think this would likely lead to lawsuits today, under a complaint violating DMCA.
saltedonion··on Executive order expected to suspend H-1B, other visas until end of year
Certainly. But the risk is incredibly high. If trump gets re-elected he’s going to go after these guys big time. Breaking them up would not be stretching the imagination.

Censoring trump is the nuclear option.

saltedonion··on Executive order expected to suspend H-1B, other visas until end of year
This and eroding section 230. I wonder if tech companies are going to fire back at trump.
saltedonion··on Mac OS X Leopard and Xcode on iPad Pro
What’s happening here? Did the guy manage to install OS X on an iPad? Is this a supported feature or a hack?
saltedonion··on Australian Government and businesses hit by state-based cyber attack, PM says
Let me take a total shot in the dark. The country responsible starts with a C and ends with a A.
saltedonion··on Facebook takes down Trump ads 'for violating our policy against organized hate'
What a messy situation. In today’s day and age you never know what’s real anymore.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this group was ran by some trump associate in secret to peddle their narrative.

I’m not the conspiracy type but I find with the trump campaign the ordinary gets thrown out of the window. Just crazy allegations after one another.

saltedonion··on Facebook takes down Trump ads 'for violating our policy against organized hate'
Wow. Never knew. This is incredibly bold of the campaign.
saltedonion··on Mozilla VPN
Given the high ethical standard of Mozilla I’m not sure how popular this will be.

For example, a while back there were research showing nord was setting up users as proxies, there by making it impossible for Netflix to block these residential ips.

I don’t think Mozilla will do this.

saltedonion··on Booting embedded Linux in 0.37 seconds on an ARMv7-A CPU at 528 MHz
Why not just wire the Linux box to the car battery? Most after market dash cams do this to capture accidents during parking. Certainly a low power device is enough ?
saltedonion··on Booting embedded Linux in 0.37 seconds on an ARMv7-A CPU at 528 MHz
Gold
saltedonion··on Lyft to use only electric cars by 2030
Am I the only skeptic here? 2030 is a decade away, and lyft needs to figure out how to stay afloat NOW.

It is not as well positioned as Uber on some important fronts such as diversifying its product offerings into food, prescription drugs etc... and it really needs to have an answer there.

I’m more concerned with if lyft will be able to attract enough capital to stay afloat rather than what kind of cars it will have in 10 years.

This seems like a way for the CEO to plant anchoring bias to me, where by displaying it thinks long term, gives the impression that there is nothing to worry about in the short run.
