saltedonion··on 80% of orgs that paid the ransom were hit again
Doesn’t mean the free market doesn’t work. Asking people to pay before putting out the fire could be seen as a pay per use model. While a government run service funded by tax dollars could be seen as a subscription service that price discriminates on income tax rates.

In both cases it’s the market at play.

saltedonion··on Restaurants May Finally Get Relief from Grubhub and Uber’s Automatic Sign-Ups
SV has some of the best (by strict definition of a capitalist) and most ruthless capitalist the world has ever seen.

It’s amazing and baffling that the general public still views sv as progressive.

saltedonion··on U.S. Antitrust Legislation Would Ban Apple from Pre-Installing Its Own Apps
Indeed quite curious of the definition of an app.

saltedonion··on LOL just got kicked out of @ycombinator
I’m confused. So YC kicked out the guy who complained about it on Twitter and not the people who advocated for lying to skip lines? Wtf?

saltedonion··on Tosh: Changing your SSH server's listen address every 30 seconds based on TOTP
Man. Time based bugs are some of the worst. I spent weeks trying to figure out what was wrong with some of my scripts running under WSL. Apparently wsl Linux kernel had a bug that could cause time to drift by minutes.

saltedonion··on Roku says it may lose YouTube TV app after Google made anti-competitive demands
It doesn’t matter what the consumer prefers. This battle is about the _ability_ to implement a feature, and that power should reside with the application developer.

Monopolists can often have batter products as well as charging monopolistic pricing.

saltedonion··on Facebook removed fake accounts in India until it saw BJP politician was involved
I feel like Facebook has realized that if they win in a major market and becomes a monopoly, reputation no longer matters as they are dominant anyway. This is perhaps the logic behind nonintervention.
saltedonion··on Ask HN: Why is the Linux community struggling to implement hibernation?
Can’t this also be said about windows. How do they solve this problem ?
saltedonion··on Facebook reportedly prepping antitrust lawsuit against Apple on App Store rules
This is true but the solution should be anti trust action against amazon as well, as opposed to let fb be monopolistic and “give small business a chance”
saltedonion··on IEEE Medal of Honor Goes to Data Compression Pioneer Jacob Ziv
Nearly all break through inventions seem obvious in hindsight. I guess putting the pieces together and connecting the dots looking forward is what’s incredibly hard. The search space can still be immense.
saltedonion··on Solarwind, Fireeye, Microsoft and Cisco leaks are offered for sale

saltedonion··on The Making of “My Octopus Teacher“
It really is a one of a kind story.

The filmmaker is incredibly ambitious, much like a lot of the startup founders we see here in the Valley.

He constantly held himself to such a high standard he eventually burnt out. But it’s this tenacity and drive that made the film possible. Diving daily for a year in frigid waters while doing excellent filmography, and then later stitching the story together into an mesmerizing narrative.

Much respect for this man.

saltedonion··on “35-50% of clicks on Reddit Ads are fraudulent”

saltedonion··on “35-50% of clicks on Reddit Ads are fraudulent”
How does the fraudster make money on reddit ads frauds? Reddit operates the site, so don’t any money go to them?
saltedonion··on Google TV
Can’t wait to jump on this and binge on my favorite hyper personalized ads!
saltedonion··on A housing industry of endless one-offs is holding our society back
Interestingly, the soviets were on a mission to provide housing for every person in the country. To be successful, they knew that bringing down cost will be key. This then led to entire cities and provinces to only build 1 or 2 floor plans.

I don’t think the west is ready for this level of equality. Lol

saltedonion··on Major hospital system hit with cyberattack, potentially largest in U.S. history
If they don’t compete on price, do they compete on service? Or simply just distribution (which insurance firm they are in network with)
saltedonion··on Major hospital system hit with cyberattack, potentially largest in U.S. history
Aren’t hospital groups in the us privately owned? So isn’t there a profit incentive to cost reduction or increasing efficiency? If so how come capitalistic forces hasn’t driven the cost down?
saltedonion··on Facebook Gizmo
A company so rich they designed their own meeting room booking hardware. This is blowing my peasant mind
saltedonion··on Would it be possible to detect an industrial civilization in geological record?
Is total human/intelligent species population not a prerequisite for industrialization. If so, we would expect to see a lot of fossilized remains, which we have not seen.
