sakopov··on Satya Nadella uses an IBM AS/400 in 1993
Yep, Banks and insurance companies love AS/400.
sakopov··on Amazon Sued over Prime Video Ads: Class-Action Suit Alleges Deception
I guess next quarter is going to be a blowout. Amazon is pulling all kinds of levers in the name of profitability. AWS is now charging for [public IPV4 usage](https://www.infoq.com/news/2024/02/aws-ipv4-charges/) which will bring $1B in revenue.
sakopov··on Prime Video cuts Dolby Vision, Atmos support from ad tier–and didn't tell subs
Seems like we made a full circle back to cable-like services but more expensive.
sakopov··on US Employers Brace for 16M Super Bowl Sick Days
I get what you're getting at but the idea that you're allowing people not to work because they're getting shit-faced the day prior while watching a football game sounds like the wrong path to take for society. And I say this as a die-hard Chiefs fan for close to 15 years lol
sakopov··on Finding a new software developer job
Is the author in the EU? I'd say outside of maybe recruiters on LinkedIn, none of these options work in this shitty market conditions in the US at this point in time.

Who's using Pulumi here and how mature is it in comparison to terraform?
sakopov··on Fck-nat: The (f)easible (C)ost (k)onfigurable NAT
That's an awesome update! I currently run fck-nat in pre-prod environments (and love it so far) but still use NAT gateway in production. I was actively looking into switching over to AlterNat for prod because of the failover to NAT gateway during NAT instance updates and outages, but definitely not a fan of the complexity you're eluding to. The future plans you've outlined definitely make me want to wait it out and just use fck-nat across the board. Thanks for sharing these plans!
sakopov··on Fck-nat: The (f)easible (C)ost (k)onfigurable NAT
This is perfect for preprod environments. I'd probably not deploy in production. There is a better nat instance setup available called alternat [1] which is a little more durable and better for production cases.

sakopov··on Meta Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2023 Results
Big tech moves like crypto. This stock market volatility is absolutely insane. I wonder if we ever go back to pre-covid times when the market didn't run up and crash every 3 months.
sakopov··on Tesla Q4 2023 Earnings Report [pdf]
AFAIK, none of the traditional automakers are producing EVs at any kind of scale even remotely close to Tesla. And Rivian isn't even in a consideration until they're actually profitable. If anything, I'd say BYD is more of a competition than either Toyota or Rivian and they're not even in the US market yet.
sakopov··on Americans are spending billions on stuff they forget to cancel
I use a service called Privacy [1] to generate virtual card numbers, which I than use with all of my subscriptions. All of the virtual cards are tied to a physical credit card used as the funding source. I get a notification every time a card is charged or a charge is denied (if it's above the set limit or no longer active). This has saved me from fraud where a single-use virtual card # I used to pay for airport parking was used to buy something online and promptly denied and multiple overcharges with random subscriptions. I even started using it for things like gym and utility payments. Highly recommended to keep a tab on subscriptions.

> Thank you for considering OpenAI for your next career move. Amazing that you thought you had a chance. Try Microsoft.

This can't be real.

sakopov··on Examples of AI rip-offs making their way into Google News
YouTube has been running ads non-stop showing deep fakes of well-known cryptocurrency icons like Michael Sailor and Anatoly Yakovenko asking people to send some crypto to an address and get 2x back. It feels like the bottom is officially falling out.
sakopov··on IT employment grew by just 700 jobs in 2023
I had maybe 3 emails from recruiters in the last year. Used to be a couple every other day. I'm between West coast and Midwest of the US and it seems like hiring is picking up quite a bit in Midwest. Or maybe it's just less competitive and jobs aren't flying off the market like they do on the coasts. With that said I still know a good number of people who have been looking for months and are getting desperate.
sakopov··on How Open ID Connect Works
No worries, glad it's helping. AWS Console will automatically discover the thumbprint when adding a new provider, so I just grabbed it from there.
sakopov··on How Open ID Connect Works
It's not terribly difficult. I just threw a quick gist to help with this OIDC for Github in AWS - https://gist.github.com/sakopov/a66ef55f9713649e7d7b9b4a91d6...
sakopov··on Who made millions trading the October 7th attacks?
There are various Twitter accounts tracking daily trades (i.e. calls with single day expiry) and correlating them to the news cycle such as acquisitions and other events with significant price movement implications for specific companies. Basically there is insider trading going on daily where the returns are 100-400x in a single trading day. I think the reality is more simple than we tend to think and the SEC just doesn't have the technical chops nor the time to go after all of these.
sakopov··on Colorado wolf reintroduction to move forward
Seems most fitting than ever to post this. How wolves change rivers is probably one of the most fascinating videos on YouTube [1]

sakopov··on Petrov: A man who lived in the woods of Mendocino County (2022)
> John Melvin said Zailenko was eventually taken to the hospital in Ukiah, and over several days, many different people visited and tried speaking to him in Russian and many other languages, but no one could identify what words exactly he was speaking.

I'm assuming it was Ukrainian? Although if someone tried to speak to him in Russian, they'd be able to understand that he was speaking Ukrainian and naturally understand a good majority of it.

> A humanity free from bullshit is a humanity truly capable of anything.

Ironically, AI has been feeding us more bullshit then I've ever seen. I'm excited to see what things will look like when all the AI "gurus" and prompt "engineers" get off this train and move on to some other hype.

sakopov··on Granting pardon for the offense of simple possession of or use of marijuana
> Just over 300 people — or 0.5% of the total prison population — are behind bars for any sort of drug possession. [1]

If anything it'll help some folks to have a their records cleaned up.

sakopov··on Ask HN: Netflix doing mass layoffs today?
IMHO, what I see from the latest CPI report is inflation becoming persistent and it looks like shelter prices are the reason. So I don't think rates will be cut in the near short-term and will likely remain unchanged. The good news is that apartment construction [1] and vacancies [2] are trending up, so this could give way to lower rents and CPI coming down to what the FED is expecting but I don't think this is happening in March but rather much later next year. So, I think we'll have more pain and layoffs in the tech market for the majority of next year...

sakopov··on Ancient redwoods recover from fire by sprouting 1000-year-old buds
Controlled burns is a very old practice. So old, in fact, that Native American tribes have used it for centuries to prevent catastrophic wild fires in North America.
sakopov··on Cicada – Open-source cross-platform version of GitHub Actions and Gitlab CI
We need a "terraform" for build pipelines.
sakopov··on Ask HN: How's your job search going in this current economy?
Take this for what it's worth, but a recruiter that I know has told me that a lot of companies in California are now reaching out to recruiters to hire out of state for the obvious reason - lesser pay. Something to ponder. If you're really desperate maybe look into other regions.
sakopov··on Amazon to managers: You can now sack employees who won't come 3 times a week
A close friend of mine still works remote for one of the orgs at Amazon from a city which doesn't have an office. Last I heard none of this stuff impacts his particular org and everyone is allowed to work 100% remote.
sakopov··on Google Cloud Spanner is now half the cost of Amazon DynamoDB
Your mileage may vary, but I think in majority of the cases Fargate is going to be significantly more expensive than Lambda.
sakopov··on Teens Love LinkedIn
I think any social network where the content is curated by some meaningful metric is going to do well in general. LinkedIn is curated by expectations of the corporate culture. If your content is positive (not necessarily helpful as is the case with LinkedIn majority of the time) you look more employable. And with LinkedIn becoming the de facto standard for orgs in their due-diligence on potential employees, the quality of your content can really help or hurt your future prospects. Other social networks like HN and SO operate in a similar way but slightly different curation metrics.
sakopov··on Show HN: Use an old tablet as an extra monitor
On a similar note, you can use your old phone as a Streamdeck alternative using TouchPortal [1]. It's not free, but it won't cost you much and it works surprisingly well.
