sakex··on 85% of AI Startups Will Be Out of Business in 3 Years, Major Investor Says
Fair point. But don't you think that companies today have learned from the mistakes of the past? Also they have way more cash for aggressively buying out disruptors.
sakex··on 85% of AI Startups Will Be Out of Business in 3 Years, Major Investor Says
0.01% is very optimistic too I think. It could very well be 0%. The reason Google /Microsoft/Apple got to that scale is because incumbent corporations like IBM let them do so, totally missing the bandwagon on the Internet, personal computing and mobile. I seriously doubt Google/Microsoft/Apple will let small startups get to their scale without a fight (or aggressive buyouts.)
sakex··on A Firefox-only minimap (2021)
Yes but you could make a change at the top of the page that would have an impact at the bottom, and that would be useful to see both changes at the same time.
sakex··on A Firefox-only minimap (2021)
Could be used for a lot of cool things, like a mirror, a magnifying glass, keeping a part of the page in view even if it is outside of the screen (for editing purposes for instance), I'm sure I'm missing many other use cases. None of them fundamentally useful but cool in their own ways.
sakex··on Eating microwave popcorn increases the level of PFAS in body (2022)
Popcorn are very low calories and they're quite filling
sakex··on AVX512 intrinsics for JDK’s Arrays.sort methods
I agree to an extent, but you have to at least be aware of the complexity of your algorithms (time and space) and understand the trade offs. If the trade offs change depending on compiler optimisations, then you'll have some difficult debugging on your hands.
sakex··on Why F# evangelism isn't working (2015)
I'm curious about what context would require an untyped language
sakex··on AVX512 intrinsics for JDK’s Arrays.sort methods
You typically wouldn't want an OpenCL or CUDA implementation because developers expect their code to be running on a single core. If random functions started using multiple cores or running or the GPU, it would become very difficult to manage core allocation of highly parallel programs.

On the other hand, they could provide a different function (GPUSort for instance) but they shouldn't replace the default one with different threading requirements.

sakex··on Din 1450, recommended for barrier-free reading
Given how this site looks on mobile, I'm not sure I can trust their opinion on barrier-free reading
sakex··on Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touchscreens
A touch screen with driver buttons and voice command would be ideal. The passenger should still be able to man the touch screen and the driver should be able to control the interface without having to look at it.
sakex··on Where have all the laid-off tech workers gone?
Google layoffs started in January 2023. How is the November date relevant?
sakex··on The age of average
Sure, the overall shape doesn't give a lot of leeway for design. But other details like the home button (early iPhones), absence of jack sockets, disappearance of navigation buttons (like early Samsung Galaxys), etc. follow the same trajectory.
sakex··on The age of average
One example that is missing but would actually have been more obvious is the smartphone. They basically all look the same.

It seems to me that some winners emerge, which makes other competitors want to replicate the winner's formula. Over time all products end up the same. Trying to deviate from that sameness will either result in customers not being interested or everyone copying you. This may be bad for innovation.

sakex··on China reports human case of H3N8 bird flu
It's obviously satire
sakex··on The chat control proposal does not belong in democratic societies
Another day I'm glad I live in Switzerland.
sakex··on Am I still relevant as a programmer now that there's AI?
What kind of maths is required? I am not a practitioner but I try to stay up to date. I read ML papers, and it seems like they only require pretty basic maths (as in High School level.) Linear algebra, calculus, and stochastic calculus. It seems to me you can go a long way with just understanding the chain rule and dot products.

I am trying to build my own Language Model using Pytorch and it is much easier than a lot of the stuff I've had to do as a traditional SWE over the years. My understanding is that the difficulty comes from training massive models that cannot fit on a single GPU efficiently, so more of a software problem than a maths problem.

Am I suffering from the Dunning-Kruger effect ? Or is the genius of the field in the combination of this limited set of techniques ?

sakex··on How Python virtual environments work
It feels like it is one of the reasons experienced devs are ditching Python for production systems. Besides horrendous performance and lousy semantics. The cost of setting up, maintaining the environment and onboarding people is just not worth it.
sakex··on Getting Past “Ampersand-Driven Development” in Rust
`&T` does not mean it's immutable. It means it's borrowed. `&mut T` means it's borrowed mutably `T` and `mut T` have the same logic but for owned variables. I don't get the issue there.
sakex··on React is holding me hostage
You'll need some data to make those claims.
sakex··on What is ChatGPT doing and why does it work?
I would assume, more in a fashion close to LSTMs with a hidden state than by re-ingesting all the tokens every time.
sakex··on What is ChatGPT doing and why does it work?
I don't re-read the whole sentence before every word I type, contrary to transformers. Also, I can go back and correct my mistakes.
sakex··on Data Classification: Does Python still have a need for class without dataclass?
Documenting your type.
sakex··on Ask HN: How good is Google's Bard?
GPT and Bard only predict the next word in a sentence. If you give the full conversation as input and add the latest prompt, the transformer will be able to use that as extra context and predict the next words.
sakex··on Google testing ChatGPT-like chatbot 'Apprentice Bard' with employees
I asked ChatGPT the question I had and it could not answer. (L3 googler.)
sakex··on Digitec Galaxus now displays warranty score and return rate
Didn't expect to see Galaxus here, i buy all my stuff there
sakex··on Seven years on, what do we know about the disappearance of flight MH370? (2021)
I assume you must be pretty low to be able to ping a 4g tower. Is it impossible that the guy would have jumped from the plane with a parachute? Then he would have run with the insurance money.
sakex··on Blizzard manager departs in protest of employee ranking system
I work there, it's definitely not true
sakex··on Just use a monorepo
> I am here to tell you: if you are running a software business and you aren't at, like, Google-tier scale, just throw it all in a monorepo.

Funny because Google is famous for having a monorepo at scale.

sakex··on Ask HN: How can I find a German family by their crest?
Have you tried Google Lens?
sakex··on How do I draw a pair of buttocks? (2014)

...although I have to say that it is a little bit embarrassing that my "reputation" up to now is mainly from this thread. –
