As far applications go, there are a lot of STEM concepts that can be communicated effectively by allowing interactivity.

Congrats on the weight loss!

I think the connection between intermittent fasting and BMI is already well understood: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6832593/. In addition, I frequently see incredible transformations on the IF subreddit. From an evolutionary perspective, it makes sense that our bodies were not designed to be consuming calories every waking hour.

A lot of people are pointing out Arnold as your example, but fail to mention he first won the Mr Olympia more than 50 years ago! Our understanding of exercise and nutrition has improved since those times. You no longer have to be an outlier in genetics or dedication to achieve good results.

I'm far from a genetic outlier, but I go to the gym for 3-4 60-90 minute sessions a week. My program is efficient, I don't take steroids, and my nutrition is decent (but not great). I'm 5'10" and 202 pounds (29 BMI).

I find it disingenuous that people use the top performers as an excuse. There is a middle ground where a modest investment will reap significant returns.

If maintaining the healthy function of my body is skewing my BMI as to be useless, then perhaps BMI is a poor metric.

I'm sure plenty of money will go towards trying, but I hope that virtual shopping does not become a thing. Especially with respect to clothing, there is simply too much information that can not be communicated visually. This includes the texture of the fabric, its density, degree of stretch, how the item fits on your body, how it looks it different lighting, etc. Online shopping also makes it easy to scam people, where some cheap, mass produced thing is misrepresented as a higher quality item.
sainez··on A non-technical explanation of deep learning
If anyone is looking for a quick overview of how LLMs are built, I highly recommend this video by Steve Seitz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnA9DMvHtfI.

It does an excellent job of taking you from 0 to a decent understanding without dumbing down the content or abusing analogies.

sainez··on A non-technical explanation of deep learning
I find the best way to learn technical topics is to build a simplified version of the thing. The trick is to understand the relationship between the high level components without getting lost in the details. This high level understanding then helps inform you when you drill down into specifics.

I think this book is a shining example of that philosophy: https://www.buildyourownlisp.com/. In the book, you implement an extremely bare-bones version of lisp, but it has been invaluable in my career. I found I was able to understand nuanced language features much more quickly because I have a clear model of how programming languages are decomposed into their components.

Off topic. But huge shout out to Udi Manber for one of my favorite CS books: Introduction to Algorithms, A Creative Approach.

They are not completely dominant, Safari still exists.

Microsoft would have become IBM, if not for Satya Nadella. He completely rejuvenated Microsoft after Ballmer's reign.

Microsoft successfully transitioned into cloud computing with Azure, Office 365, and Teams. They dramatically improved their image among developers/open source with WSL, Typescript, VS Code, and their GitHub acquisition. Now it seems they caught Google completely off guard with respect to AI productization.

sainez··on StableLM: A new open-source language model
This could not be more untrue.

The world is littered with businesses that operate as commercial wrappers around open source technology. Ever heard of GitHub? What about MacOS? AWS?

sainez··on American IQ scores have rapidly dropped, proving the 'Reverse Flynn effect'
> My gardener is not high IQ.

Wow! You must have ran a battery of IQ tests to assert this with such absolute certainty.

My father used to be a gardener to make ends meet. Because of a lack of education and a language barrier, I'm sure he would appear low IQ as well. Now he works in electronics manufacturing and the efficiency by which he debugs production problems and reasons from first principles would put many of my educated peers to shame. What can be easily dismissed as a lack of ability can be more reasonably explained by a lack of opportunity and resources. But it is easier for privileged people to look down on others and believe that everyone is in a position they deserve.

sainez··on ChatGPT-Linux-Assistant
I think this exemplifies the Achilles heel of the current generation of LLMs. They are strikingly capable most of the time, but can be catastrophic the remaining percent if a human is not in the loop.

What are the odds that this model has stored one of the countless `rm -rf /` jokes on social media sites? Too high for my tastes...

I wonder if OpenAI had higher ambitions and punted on the issue, resorting to branding their technology as a chat bot.

The supplement industry is in sorry state. It hurts to see people throwing away money on useless products on Amazon.

Real Mushrooms is the only mushroom supplier I trust. (No affiliation, you can find discussions about them on Reddit)

A Mucuna pruriens extract can have significant levels of L-DOPA, a precursor to dopamine.

This looks very interesting. I just had an idea for something along similar lines today when thinking about how we can be resilient against the coming wave of AI-generated spam.

But I definitely think that the protocol itself must be open for it to be viable.
