sachleen··on Show HN: hColumns – a jQuery plugin that looks like OS X Finder Column View
Pretty neat! One thing though: when the horizontal scroll bar shows, a vertical one shows as well. See this: http://i.imgur.com/ZzqDv0C.png
sachleen··on Aaron Swartz's FBI File Released
Just click the download button below the document. Here's a mirror if you can't access scribid for whatever reason: http://www.filedropper.com/126146785-aaron-h-swartz-fbi-file
sachleen··on Ask HN: What's your blog?
http://blog.sachleen.com/ - just little stuff I've made. Now I'm focusing on an Arduino project.
sachleen··on Fangle - reactive text generation from markdown
There is an example, see the Examples dropdown above the textarea.
sachleen··on This $200 device will Rickroll anyone who comes within six feet of it
It's expected to cost more than what you'd think it's worth if you're just making one. A significant chunk of the cost is on general stuff: wire, glue, solder, etc.

Possible cost cutting options I thought of:

Since it's only playing one song, you actually wouldn't need the MP3 shield. There are many tutorials online for wav playback on Arduino without a shield and the Arduino can easily read a SD card using a logic level converter ($1, max). The sound quality will be low but it's cheap! Ultrasonic sensors are cheap on eBay, you could also go with a passive IR sensor.

Of course you could build your own Arduino compatible board for about $10 but you'd need a way to program it (ICSP isn't exactly cheap either).

sachleen··on The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Arduino
Pretty good write up for beginners. I think you should add a link to http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/HomePage in the Whats Next so people can see what else they can do with the Arduino!
sachleen··on HTML-based weather app
It's HTML 5 but requires iOS? Why. I spoofed the user agent in Chrome and it wants me to add it to my iOS home screen before I can try it out. Why not just show me the app when I go to the page? And if I want to add it to my home screen, I will.
sachleen··on Show HN: Scratchpad.io - a real-time HTML and CSS editor
Pretty nice, I'll probably be using this for debugging and examples.

Bug:

Open the about panel by clicking the icon in top left (three horizontal bars). Close the panel by clicking the same icon.

Maximize the preview window by clicking the arrow in the top right of the edit panel. Click the arrow to view the code panel again.

The about panel pops out as well and the arrow button covers the show/hide about (three horizontal bars) button. Expected behavior: it should return to the view that I had before maximizing.

sachleen··on Nokia Lumia 920 is more retina than the iPhone 4S
It's not just 48px, it's 61,440. But I do agree with both of your points. Not much to brag about there.
sachleen··on Show HN: A Really Simple Blog Platform
You should make "1 more articles by sfard" a link to take you back to your user page. I missed the list on the right at first glance.
sachleen··on Avgrund.js
Works fine for me, Chrome Win7. I only have integrated graphics, too.
sachleen··on Avgrund.js
Really neat. I think it would be better if it didn't do any sort of blurring on IE. Not sure if that's a side effect of zooming out the page or blur but the page content looks horrible when the modal is up.
sachleen··on Pure CSS Tool Tips Revisited
I'm using css-only tooltips on various parts of my blog. Here's the code: http://blog.sachleen.com/css-only-tooltips.html

It meets all of the requirements discussed in this post and uses much less CSS.

sachleen··on [dead]
Still up for me. Here's a screenshot if you can't view it. http://i.imgur.com/SCpKd.png
sachleen··on Bootstrap-wysihtml5: a simple, beautiful wysiwyg editor
Firefox 11 has the italics issue in both the normal and advanced editor.
sachleen··on Confnow - Painless 24/7 Free Conference Calls
I tried calling the number from Google Voice but it couldn't complete the call. I get maybe one ring before it disconnects. Anyone else having this issue?
sachleen··on Save a screenshot to Dropbox with a keyboard shortcut (Ubuntu)
I have created something like this using AutoHotkey

See http://blog.sachleen.com/dropbox-uploader-and-screenshot-uti...

Includes screenshot, file, and text upload.

sachleen··on Show HN: Fed up with WebEx, so we built a way to screen share in under 20 sec.
Just tried it. Works pretty well. I especially like the share rectangle region feature.

I have been using https://join.me/ since it allows me to control the other person's screen as well. The setup is just as simple but it requires you to run a downloaded file.

sachleen··on Why You Shouldn't Use Twitter Bootstrap
http://builtwithbootstrap.com/ has tons of examples of unique sites that you wouldn't think "Oh this obviously uses Bootstrap" just by looking at it.
sachleen··on [EXPERIMENT] I attached a file to a tweet
I can't find it but I remember something that sent messages like this over Facebook chat and then, on the other end, the software pieced it all together to show the image that was transferred. Anyone else remember this? It was a video so it might be on YouTube.
sachleen··on Public speaking for normal people
The best thing that has worked for me is to exhale before I begin speaking. Before I realized this I had always started out with a lungful of air and it was just bad. I'd try to say as much as I could in that one breath and then gasp for another lungful and repeat. Once I started deliberately starting a speech with an exhale, it felt so natural and easy.

The other thing is with the ums. After finishing a sentence, I just pause to gather my thoughts and resume talking. One trick I've read in many places is to have a cup of water with you so you can take a sip if you need a couple of seconds to pause.

sachleen··on Researchers turn your phone into a virtual projector
Works fine here. Try it directly from YouTube:

sachleen··on Hopper: Stop emailing yourself notes, files, and images
Mind sharing your code for that? I think I tried implementing that originally but I could never get it to work.
sachleen··on Hopper: Stop emailing yourself notes, files, and images
Sure, here's the source: https://gist.github.com/1609919 Also requires jQuery.

I access it like this: http://domain.com/notepad?key=yoursecret

The JS checks to see if the contents of the textbox has changed, and if it has, it makes a POST request via AJAX to the server that saves it to a text file.

sachleen··on Hopper: Stop emailing yourself notes, files, and images
I created a simple notepad for personal use. It's a textbox that syncs to my server. I have a bookmark to it on my Kindle as well as a notepad widget on the new tab page of Chrome. It can also be accessed from my phone (any device with a browser, really).

When I'm on my computer, it's there every time I open my browser. Anywhere else, It's just a few clicks away.

That seems to be enough for me as I rarely need to sync files, and when I do, I have dropbox.

Edit: Also thought I should mention that before I created my own solution, I used Simplenote (http://simplenoteapp.com/) for the webapp and iOS app. Since then they've added an API and have a few other apps I think.

sachleen··on A simple guide for getting started with git
I have been using Git for a couple of weeks for my personal projects and got frustrated with it. I literally just finished moving all of my stuff back from Git to SVN before checking HN and reading this. The link you posted is making me have second thoughts and now I want to give it another go. Thanks... I guess.
sachleen··on Google Chrome Extension: 2 Pane for Gmail
They do not. Extensions are required to list out the permissions they need in the manifest file. Go to the options page for managing extensions and enable Developer Mode. Then expand the one you want to check out and get its ID. I believe the following paths are correct though I can only confirm the one for Windows 7. The extension will be a folder with the ID as the name. You can see exactly what it's doing, and even make modifications that will be reflected in the installed extension. Note: any modifications you make will be reverted if there is an update.

Windows XP C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions

Windows Vista C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions

Windows 7 C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions

Mac OS X /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Extensions

sachleen··on Ask HN: Simple setup for a new Windows machine
I use http://ninite.com/. Maybe a combination of the two might work for you?
sachleen··on Show HN: I hate looking for my pandora tab so I wrote this chrome extension
There was another Pandora extension a while ago. For whatever reason, it is no longer available but you can find the source here: http://code.google.com/p/pandora-extension/

Last time I checked, it did not work.

sachleen··on Death to .DS_Store
Cool! I did not know that one. I also found out holding down "Shift" does the same for "move" and holding down "Alt" allows you to create a shortcut.
