saba2008··on Half of vinyl buyers in the U.S. don’t have a record player: study
I've done this even with CDs.

50% figure for vinyl sounds plausible to me, considering cost of turntable and hassle of actually using it (unless you enjoy the ritual and experience of physical media). And vinyl makes great merch.

saba2008··on Whipper: Accurate Audio CD Ripping
Single file + CUE sheet solves lead-in thingie problem, by storing both timestamps (time when player should start showing 'Track 2', and time which servers as zero for track-relative timestamps)

It pretty much mirrors actual CD structure of TOC (containing all necessary timestamps and metadata) and continuous sequence of frames with audio data

saba2008··on Show HN: Rmt an alternative to rm with trash written in Rust
At least globbing should return fully qualified paths (not sure there is an established term for `(<directory>/)+<file>' paths, as opposed to `<file>` ones).
saba2008··on Dotfiles being hidden is a UNIXv2 mistake (2012)
>Some things you need to hide from the end user. De-emphasize - maybe, hide - no. Garbage pile that is average Linux home directory is pretty much result of 'out of sight - out of mind' practice, enabled by dotfiles being hidden. I wish Linux settled on single `~/System/` directory, mirroring `/` structure.

On the other hand, dotfiles convention is useful for meta/"parallel" data, `.git` being prime example - something tighly linked with abitrary file structure.

saba2008··on Why intuitive troubleshooting has stopped working
Intelligence (in a metric, "this is intelligent way to do X", sense) implies some purpose. But life is just one big 'systems that survive and grow - grow and survive' tautology.
saba2008··on Why intuitive troubleshooting has stopped working
Only if you are designing another TempleOS. Thing for it's own sake, unaffected by any external requirements and completely specified, designed and implemented by one person.
saba2008··on Buttery Smooth “10fps” (2020)
GIF compression is lossless, codecs used in WebM and MP4 are not.
saba2008··on Ask HN: I miss Usenet. Are there any modern equivalents?
>These days

HashCash is older than Bitcoin, and Bitcoin sybil-attack protection is basically HashCash.

saba2008··on Ukraine is a major producer of neon gas, critical for lasers used in chipmaking
It can be also tied to bespoke equipment, hard-to-transfer expertise and experience. If consumption grows relatively slow, it makes sense to expand single installation, rather than duplicate it with 'copy exactly (which might take too long to pay off).
saba2008··on Russian forces invade Ukraine after Putin orders attack
Promise is not disputed. There are no signed papers - there is no promise.

Whenever it was discussed at all is 1% a purely academic dispute and 99% demagogy.

saba2008··on Perl code that is syntactically correct only on Fridays
You can exploit it do distinguish whenever script is `curl | bash`'ed.

Add `sleep 1`, and detect pause on server. Then, if pause detected - serve attack payload. If not - somebody is careful enough to download and audit, so serve just the script.

saba2008··on Perl code that is syntactically correct only on Fridays
Most other languages would require `eval` and having incorrect code as syntactically correct string literal.

But because Perl is parsed as it is executed, incorrect code raises syntax error only when it is reached by execution.

News at 11: greater fool pyramid scheme collapses.
saba2008··on Terminal support for emoji
Putting Unicode everywhere is great.

Turning Unicode into clipart collection is not.

saba2008··on Swedes were fooled by one of the biggest scientific bluffs of our time (2020)
Yes, it is.
saba2008··on Steam has been banned in China
It's less than 'final nail', but rather sign that government has no better topics, than crude mix of chauvinism an and emotional manipulation. Cf. Russian progression from 'ignore politics, look at economic growth' -> 'ignore politics for economical stability sake' -> 'ignore politics or homos will diddle your kids'
saba2008··on Saule Omarova says banks sank her chance to become a key regulator
Lack of private banking is pretty minor aspect. Comparing to, say, having de-facto scrip instead of proper currency.
saba2008··on A Xiaomi phone might’ve shipped with a censorship list in Europe
>You should be more open minded that different people and cultures have different values.

So I can start owning slaves, if I claim it fits my values? Or I need to gather some minimal number of fellow slave owners, so I can declare it 'culture'?

saba2008··on Chromium: Permit blocking of view-source: with URLBlocklist
Not really, if you consider that X is not 'ensure quizzes work', but rather 'how do we cover our asses'.
saba2008··on Chromium: Permit blocking of view-source: with URLBlocklist
Or just nobody did care. Contractor's main expense are kickbacks and actual product is made by cheapest subcontractor.
saba2008··on The text/enriched MIME Content-type (1996)
>a bit of nightmare to sanitize

The fact that mail has to be sanitized at all is already a nightmare, and a perfect example of where inappropriate reuse of existing standard can lead to.

saba2008··on $1.5B lithium deposit discovered in Maine; excavating it poses a legal challenge
>there’s no natural way for it form on Earth.

'Naturally forming' elements on Earth are limited to uranium fission products.

Lithium (also aluminium, magnesium, sodium) distribution is due to it being light and chemically active, thus ending up in crust, while heavier metals (iron, nickel) end up in mantle and core. It takes specific geological circumstances to bring mantle material into crust, so there are 'hot spots'. Lithium is already there, so it is spread somewhat evenly.

saba2008··on Banks, gangsters and the strange resurgence of cash
Doesn't even need to be 'wealthy', just be above payday-to-payday survival and have savings.
saba2008··on Every search bar looks like a URL bar to users
Because it confuses and pushes users toward wrong mental model of surrounding world.
saba2008··on The history of what we call work
You miss hobby you do for entertainment with work you do for survival.

Once it's no longer choice between 'apt usage of your senses and body' and 'insufficient stimulation', but between maximum performance and starvation, it stops being fun. Just read the happiness on faces of homeless.

saba2008··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
Because it's good-old trick of making vague and overreaching rules, so anybody could be declared guilty and thus maximizing power of people who apply these rules.

But history repeats as comedy, so thankfully no firing squads and killing fields this time.

saba2008··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
>is part of a distasteful part of history

saba2008··on Almost All of Facebook’s Top Christian Pages in 2019 Run by Foreign Troll Farms
When people "just believe" the physicists, it's shortcut. If you dig beneath all the turtles, there are facts there. Yes, there is great possibility and space for manipulation and distortion, but it is rooted in the reality, which percolates through all the layers of human interpretation.

Religion lack that root, there is nothing but human culture in it, which is then mistaken for objective truth about environment.

saba2008··on “Death” one of 5 ways to lose at Chess, according to PGN standard
AGI can find their own purposes in addition to one it was created for. Same way people find life purposes beyond maintaining and propagating germline.
