s5ma6n··on I Have Resigned from the Google AMP Advisory Committee
TLDR:

> The stated goal of the AMP AC is to “make AMP a great web citizen.”

> I am concerned that – despite the hard work of the AC – Google has limited interest in that goal.

A "search engine" is completely affecting the culture, technology usage and (directly and indirectly) lives of the people. This is yet another reminder that we need to get rid of the AMP plague.

s5ma6n··on Ask HN: Why do some timestamps on HN have a full stop at the end?
Maybe it is due to load balancing and different templates/release versions used in nodes?
s5ma6n··on Pinecil: Portable USB-C RISC-V soldering iron
Uff this is really bad news. `After 2021-01-07 any purchase outside-EU will hit customs and taxed.`

It was already a problem ordering from Pine and this also exceeds the 22 Euros.

s5ma6n··on Contact-tracing data harvested from pubs and restaurants being sold
Unfortunately, this is now illegal in Germany and has a monetary fine attached to it.
s5ma6n··on Mathematicians discover a perfect way to multiply (2019)
Thank you for the nice explanation. Clears up the important point that article was not quite able to do so. Even though it feels unintuitive to apply a Fourier transform to numbers for multiplication purposes, it works nicely. Fascinating.
s5ma6n··on Fast Fibonacci numbers using Monoids
Thank you everyone for all the links. This is very helpful!
s5ma6n··on Fast Fibonacci numbers using Monoids
Thanks for the link.

I am not good with Haskell but I meant in general mathematical / algebraic introduction, explanation or a lecture.

s5ma6n··on Fast Fibonacci numbers using Monoids
I see monoids more and more everyday. A bit outside the topic but does anyone have a good introduction-level resource to learning monoids?
s5ma6n··on Interactive guide to Buffer Overflow exploitation
I love the latest commit messages at the emulator repo :)

"Fuck you JavaScript, an array with 1 int in it is not a fucking number. Why are you like this you piece of rotten garbage"

I share your hatred :)

A very nice guide and introduction both to x86 asm and buffer overflow. Thanks for this.

s5ma6n··on Google emphasizes popularity over accuracy
How would you pick the options by hand? This way you would introduce the thought and point of view bias of the people working at Google to the results. Additionally how would you pick who is the winner? For example how would you compare a technology article is more correct coming from various sources? They also have their own bias introduced to their content.
s5ma6n··on Critical PayPal Security Hack: Multiple Thefts Now Reported–Check Your Settings
Even yesterday there was this thread https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22403565

PayPal needs to seriously reevaluate how they want to approach the vulnerabilities. Why have a bounty program if you are going to act hostile towards the white hat community or even ignore their reports?

s5ma6n··on Gilbert Strang Teaches Linear Algebra
Exactly this. I also studied from his video lectures and I owe most of my understanding of the topic to him. He has an amazing ability to intuitively explain complex concepts step by step.
s5ma6n··on Every software company giving a take home coding test
It is usually very easy to criticize and not provide any alternative solutions. How should a company process 1000 resumes with a meaningful effort and find candidates to be called for an on-site interview?

If you think a single on-site interview of a candidate, it usually takes a few hours of multiple people from every segment of the company (mgmt, development, HR). Everybody has to prepare beforehand for some time for these interviews as well. So in the end, every on-site interview is costly for a company.

As an engineer, I dislike attending on-site interviews to hire people because I see it as a time that is not used optimally.

Finally, IMHO, the solution is to provide both standard-track and fast-track interviews where exceptional (on paper) candidates can be called directly for an interview and regular candidates would have multi-stage interviews.

s5ma6n··on Video Game Keyboard Diagrams
Apart from other suggestions, what I need the most is a search functionality (search box) to find the games I want.

This could even further be pushed by giving a Steam library link and automatically create diagrams for all the games in a user's library.

s5ma6n··on Boeing identifies new software problem on grounded 737 Max
Damn...

- "No configuration management"

- "No bug tracking system"

- "No formal specifications"

- "9,273 – 11,528 global variables"

- "Uses recursion, no mitigation for stack overflow. Memory just past stack is OSEK RTOS area"

I thought of Toyota as a much better company in terms of safety and reliability. I can't imagine other manufacturers and their code.

s5ma6n··on The Effect of Cold Showering on Health and Work (2016)
For me, one of the important elements in the results is the reduction in influenza with 60 and 90 sec. cold shower group. On the other hand seeing this adverse effect also made me nervous:

"One participant in the 90 seconds intervention group died unexpectedly of occult chronic pulmonary embolism at 56 days follow-up."

I know it is not because of the trial but it is unfortunate.

s5ma6n··on Germany Phased Out Nuclear Power and Deadly Emissions Spiked
1) Energy efficiency will surely be better over time but population is also increasing and migration rate to Germany is increasing as well. So this will probably even out the efficiency improvements.

2) Energy storage is a very difficult and expensive task. Germany is able to store energy around 7.6 GW[1], this number is comical next to the TWh numbers we are discussing.

3) You should perhaps read a bit more about this here [2] to be informed. It is quite obvious and proven from technological perspective and material costs that renewable energy is right now more expensive to produce and still causes more human fatalities than nuclear energy.

s5ma6n··on Germany Phased Out Nuclear Power and Deadly Emissions Spiked
The nuclear phase out will be finished in 2022 but coal phase out is 2038. 18 more years, 1 more generation away.

Coal+Lignite production is 170.9 TWh. Current nuclear production is 75.2 TWh and all renewables combined are 242.6 TWh.

So Germany has to find 75.2 TWh in 2 years and 170.9 TWh in 18 years. In the last 5 years, renewables are increased only by 50 TWh.

So, it will be extremely expensive to cover all these power requirements in renewables only. What do you think will happen? Either Germany will start buying power or buying gas to fund new natural gas power plants.

In any way, phasing out nuclear power is one of the worst ideas Germany has ever executed.

s5ma6n··on A new browsing experience arrives in Firefox for Android Nightly
For me personally, uBlock (and other extensions) is the only reason I am using Firefox on Android. If this feature is removed, I will either go back to Samsung Browser or check something else.
s5ma6n··on Windows disk space requirements (log-log scale)
Ugh, I felt an itch because of the x-axis ordering. Obviously it jokingly skips the XP, Me and NT builds because x-axis is only numeric.
s5ma6n··on Show HN: I built a website for sharing salary info
While this sounds quite good on paper, I have a few questions:

- What kind of data are you storing about a user? You mention verification with LinkedIn but what happens if your database is compromised 6 months later and all data is accessed by a malicious 3rd party?

- When checking salaries, I prefer to search a job title and look at the average salary of a country, city, region or a company. Do you provide these features?

- I looked at the demo application and only thing I see is a table with some entries. Unfortunately, this is not very user friendly.

     - I would want to see the average salary of a position

     - Count of salary entries of a position

     - Variance for the salary of a position (min, max, average, median)
- The way to success is to have a lot of salary entries in your database. As a newly established service owner, how do you plan to keep users with your service and providing updates rather than using glassdoor etc. competitors?

- How do you plan to monetize this service?

Please do not see my comments as offensive, I mean to ask honest questions and give criticism.

s5ma6n··on Nuclear energy is a vital part of solving the climate crisis
As I also mentioned, I agree with your points on the psychological effects of the nuclear disasters. But do not forget about dam failures that kill a lot of people instantly, gas explosions, oil spills, and most importantly smog caused by coal plants that affect people for the rest of their lives.

You may not suddenly get sick from coal power plant smog but your life quality degrades over time and you develop certain diseases. Even though smog is a visible danger, nobody cares about inhaling it with a great cost to their lives.

There is only one nuclear accident (INES > 3) that has happened in the past 30 years and that is the Fukushima. On the other hand there has been 142 oil spill accidents in the last 30 years[1]. Several sources calculate that on average, cleanup of an oil spill costs around 5 billion dollars[2]. So, in short, oil spills has cost us 710 billion dollars to clean-up in the last 30 years, not including any health or repair etc. material costs. I would also be curious to find out a similar cost calculation for coal related cleanups.

New nuclear plants should not be built blindly. Japan perhaps should not use nuclear technology due to being in a highly active seismic region. But this should not stop other countries from investing in nuclear energy. For example, France is generating 71.7% of their electricity from nuclear sources and they are 'almost' accident-free.

s5ma6n··on Nuclear energy is a vital part of solving the climate crisis
You can check out the second citation for this value. Also here is a relatively newer link which also explains the calculations: https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2012/06/deaths-by-energy-sourc...
s5ma6n··on Nuclear energy is a vital part of solving the climate crisis
Nuclear energy has the lowest death rate (deaths per TWh of any type of energy generation technique/source [1][2][3]. It is the obvious answer to the climate crisis but unfortunately the cultural and public effects are blocking the way for this solution. Unfortunately, facts do not change our minds.

I believe the best approach is to show people gradually that newer generation reactors are much safer and better than older generations. Just to give an example, the technology of reactors at Chernobyl is from 1953.

Newer reactor technologies are much safer and there are some types of reactors that they even use spent fuel rather than enriched fuel that all other types of reactors use. I believe Bill Gates also has invested some resources in this 'traveling wave reactors'[4].

s5ma6n··on Milan Airport WiFi sends your MAC address to advertisers and trackers
As far as I know, IEEE is quite strict in this matter but I just searched for it now and have seen a couple of cases where people ran into duplicate MAC addresses.

I would assume this is a rare occurrence and if not, it should still be okay to sometimes run into address collisions for advertising purposes.

Thanks for the info.

s5ma6n··on Milan Airport WiFi sends your MAC address to advertisers and trackers
Since MAC address ranges are allocated to certain manufacturers, it is a simple way to track your device type. Additionally, all MAC addresses are unique so it is the easiest way to match/combine your data from different trackers.
s5ma6n··on Designing the Facebook Company Brand
This change was definitely needed after all of those fiascos to rehabilitate their image. Google also did the same with the Alphabet company restructuring before. Even though I dislike the practices they have with people's data, the Facebook as a company has undeniably contributed a lot in other fields such as deep learning.
s5ma6n··on Million Short
I am not a DoS/spam expert but first things come to mind are : - Google account credibility (I have a very old Google account and this should provide me some trust from Google's perspective) - Malicious word analysis in search queries - Browser/device information to determine authenticity of the search (if I am at home or connecting over a Tor network) - Gradually increase the response time for the queries On top of those, Google is a machine learning company and I am sure this process should be automated by now without requiring filling of any active captchas.
s5ma6n··on Million Short
Why would anyone be willing to do captchas? It is just a waste of time for regular users. I also had a similar experience when I searched for many different queries in such a short time, I got hit by captchas for a while.
s5ma6n··on DuckDuckGo Terminal Interface
Are you sure you are not confusing DDG with Ecosia? Ecosia is also an UI to Bing.
