s3nnyy··on Ask HN: What point in my career should I be getting at by now?
Most developers also just know certain stacks in-depth (e.g., Python + Django / Angular + Javascript). Yes, these technologies enable someone to solve a bigger variety of problems, but it doesn't mean they are then more worth to the market than you. It always depends on what the market wants.

Github profiles matter less than you think because it is hard to tell what the person did themselves and what is a fork. Recruiters and hiring managers I work with look at an online profile for roughly 10 seconds to see if you use certain technologies, that is it. I elaborate on this at length in "Coderfit: All you need to know for your programming career" https://gumroad.com/l/cdrft/

s3nnyy··on Ask HN: How you measure time to ramp-up for new engineers as a manager?
It boils down to the question of how to measure the productivity of software engineers in general, which is hard to answer.

Very hard, juniors can get productive within two weeks, but seniors or leads might need up to 6 months.

s3nnyy··on Ask HN: What point in my career should I be getting at by now?
I think being good with a proprietary technology like Qlik isn't so bad. That is a rare skill and there are jobs.

The question is what you want in life and your job. You are saying you have the feeling you should have learned more but why is that? Do you want more money, fame or freedom?

exists since 2-3 years, inspired by it maybe?

But sometimes to CTO, I have seen it happening.

Our interview process:

1) Phone screen with our CTO

2) Two sessions of remote pair-programming with our engineers (no algorithmic questions but reasonable pair-programming tasks).

3) Onsite half a day with us.

s3nnyy··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired right now?
I live in Zurich since 5 years and am German. I never experienced anything like that. The Swiss are very polite and if you follow the rules, you will be fine.

What people miss is that Zurich has more foreigners than London or Berlin. 40% have no Swiss passport. It is actually the most international city in Europe.

Quatico.com |Lead (React+Java), Fullstack, Backend (Java), Frontend (React), DevOps | Zurich, Switzerland | SALARY: 90k-130k CHF | ONSITE | Swiss or EU member-states passport-holders only

We currently are looking to hire one fullstack (React, Java) senior engineer, or team lead. We have a "engineering over management" culture where you find engineers both with formal computer science background and also ones, who are self-taught. Our CTO worked with Erich Gamma et al before.

We are building tailored web apps with heavy number crunching on the server - e.g., we built the software analyzing all the weather data in Switzerland. We do custom development with a heavy engineering part and we regularly impress clients with software that rarely needs maintenance.

Our interview process:

1) Phone screen with our CTO

2) Two sessions of remote pair-programming with our engineers (no algorithmic questions but reasonable pair-programming tasks).

s3nnyy··on Ask HN: What are good distance learning Bachelor's/Master's degrees one can do?
I think https://www.fernuni-hagen.de/ has such degrees but I think it is in German.
s3nnyy··on Why recruiter spam works and why you might as well stop complaining
Yes exactly. But firms consist of humans. Humans mostly are too lazy and think too short them. So they rather bcc a bad job description to 10 recruitment agencies, hoping some has a warm, fitting candidate instead of briefing one or two agencies really well.
s3nnyy··on Why recruiter spam works and why you might as well stop complaining
I took your feedback to heart that I don't offer a solution. So, I added this paragraph that suggests one:

"If Linkedin would just block people from sending hundreds of connection requests, firms would vett their recruiters better, and candidates would ignore messages from strangers, then spam would decrease."

s3nnyy··on Ask HN: What job can a “jack of all trades” look for?
Isn't this a lemon market? Owner's expectations always are too good, or not? It is their "baby" and they are biased to think it's better than it is. A seller could hire someone to run the thing for them, so why sell unless the person needs money or is hiding something? Maybe I am too pessimistic.
s3nnyy··on Ask HN: What’s the most important modern simple invention?
Wheels on suitcases (taken from antifragile by N.Taleb)
s3nnyy··on Ask HN: What are the underrated newsletters you like reading?
Here my own newsletter on tech, coding and careers: https://www.getrevue.co/profile/coderfit/

My motivation to starting one was that most programmers focus too much on the technical details ("get better at Python") and too little on the factors related to career growth or money ("how and when do i ask my boss for a raise?").

setting it to 2560x1440 brought its own problems sadly, macbook pro 2015-2016 don't seem to handle i well
s3nnyy··on I went back working on 24-inch 1080p screen from a 32-inch 4k screen

s3nnyy··on I went back working on 24-inch 1080p screen from a 32-inch 4k screen

Author of the article here. Moving onto a "tinier" screen forces me to focus as well.

I need the vertical 1080p screen mainly for looking at CVs or console outputs.
