s1mplicissimus··on Gmail registration now requires scanning a QR code and sending a text message
Do you believe the government doesn't keep track of your email, just because it's hosted on googles servers?
s1mplicissimus··on Gmail registration now requires scanning a QR code and sending a text message
I'd assume that you also never tried running your own email server and have the email actually delivered to a gmail address, then.
s1mplicissimus··on Reverse Engineering SimTower
So I really liked SimTower back in the day, this was a lovely read. Not sure if this is intentional, but while playtesting, I noticed that I can just build Condos and destroy them again for a total of ~+100k. Was it that way in the original?

Wouldn't it be possible to pipe away the heat to the next city and use it as heating there? That way the heat emissions wouldn't be as noticeable

s1mplicissimus··on We've raised $17M to build what comes after Git
"Backed by" as in "running git under the hood", not as in "supported by the git organization". I'd probably use "powered by" in this case to avoid confusion

s1mplicissimus··on Hetzner Prices increase 30-40%

They can just as easily plummet to a fraction. Really depends on wether there's value for the entities that are paying

s1mplicissimus··on Europe's $24T Breakup with Visa and Mastercard Has Begun
Oh boy, did I hurt your feelings or something? If you call this pedantry, I'll gladly be a pedant in your perception. I'll call you ignorant in return though. And since you are an ignorant (notice how I can also take an adjective and ascribe it to your whole personhood?) you probably won't know what the difference between Europe and the European Union is anyway, so there's little hope for a fruitful discussion.
s1mplicissimus··on What dating apps are optimizing
> No surprise, lots of billionaires are still mediocre looking

I interpreted that as something billionaires could afford to not care about, like good manners. But tbh. I'm not that well versed with the state of plastic surgery either. Anyway, beauty is subjective and changes over time, there's plenty of more important things to focus on :)

s1mplicissimus··on Europe's $24T Breakup with Visa and Mastercard Has Begun
Remember how UK is not a part of the EU anymore for about a decade by now?
s1mplicissimus··on What dating apps are optimizing
But you can become wealthy too, and then pay for a personal trainer, those expensive status signifier items and even plastic surgery if needed. Just need to work harder! /s
s1mplicissimus··on Something Big Is Happening
Mind sharing some of this supposedly easy to find evidence? I'm having a real hard time digging any up.
s1mplicissimus··on Google is stifling anti-ICE speech in the workplace
I'm surprised this kind of speech was tolerated in the first place. Tbh even if it was, I'd do the devil and speak up in a way where I'm identifiable #futurecareerprospects

I admire the courage of the people that do it anyway though.

s1mplicissimus··on Testing Ads in ChatGPT
There's other options to break this kind of cognitive pattern, like https://unhook.app/

If I want them, I can use them. No need to justify ads for this use case.

s1mplicissimus··on Cloudflare claimed they implemented Matrix on Cloudflare workers. They didn't
It didn't even compile, which makes me consider wether your comment is just ignorant or outright maliciously misleading
s1mplicissimus··on Any application that can be written in a system language, eventually will be
Just wanted to add another bit of reassurance. At some point during my career people started "stack overflow coding". But ultimately someone has to fix the difficult issues and when you have the skills, you are coming out on top where others can just shrug and say "well there's no solution on stack overflow".

s1mplicissimus··on AI is hitting UK harder than other big economies, study finds
I'm sure this is purely due to awesome AI and not the long term fallout from Brexit. The investment bank conducting the "research" is surely not invested in AI either.
s1mplicissimus··on Selling SaaS in Japan
You seem to imply that the trade is only going in one direction. A quick lookup gave me (2024 data)

€334.8 billion worth of EU imports from the US

€532.3 billion worth of EU exports to the US

which shows a) that trade is heavily bidirectional and b) that US is importing more from EU than vice versa. So that doesn't add up to support your statement at all.

s1mplicissimus··on Selling SaaS in Japan
I'll try to express this as a programming analogy:

You are correct that to the outside the EU market negotiates as a single entity, like, say, an interface:

  interface Market {
    interact(string payload)
  }
on the inside though you will quickly realize that the payload format is XML in one country, Json in another, a completely custom format in a third. And that's not even talking fields, names, types, semantics etc. Hope this could clarify the confusion.
s1mplicissimus··on A Pro Meticulously Restores a Damaged Oil Painting [video]
Was just about to recommend that same channel. In comparison to the article video, I find Baumgartners style much more educating and soothing. Though the process they use for restoring paintings seems pretty similar, it's always interesting to see new ways of doing things.
s1mplicissimus··on Selling SaaS in Japan
> The process is different. You just can’t treat sales and go-to-market as a whole in Japan the same as you would in North America or Europe.

As if the european market didn't consist of dozens of languages, legislations, cultures and histories.

> When should a SaaS company consider reaching out to Nihonium?

Aah, that's what the article is about

s1mplicissimus··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Sounds like a difficult situation, and I think I can relate - I hope for you that you can find some people who you actually enjoy hanging out with and who appreciate you for who you are. We all have our little quirks, and part of a good relationship is to graciously "overlook" them. That is not twisting yourself, it's accommodating your counterpart. For personal stuff, it often helps me to get out of my head to redirect the thoughts from "what do I want" to "what do they want and how can I give it to them". Once I started considering others wants more, i also noticed more when they were gracious towards me, which, I think, made me a bit less of an ungrateful dipshit and generally easier to be around. Wish you all the best!
s1mplicissimus··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Historically, people wouldn't even move out of the village, never mind across the continent. So it was a bit easier to get the kids to the grannies.
