rzz3··on “Victim's Advocates” are unhappy with Apple's new iMessage edit features
I wouldn’t use it in that case. I disable iCloud backups for iMessage, use Signal whenever possible, and encourage those I talk to to do the same. Privacy and security are important to me, and we’ve all seen how easy it is to fake an administrative subpoena.
rzz3··on “Victim's Advocates” are unhappy with Apple's new iMessage edit features
Which, I find a bit ridiculous. It’s not Apple’s job to preserve a record. Someone has the same potential to be harassed on a voice call, with no record if it happening. If someone is harassing, iMessage offers the ability to block, and screenshots can be taken the moment a message is sent if the receiver wishes to preserve evidence.
rzz3··on A single prophylactic 200mg dose of Doxycyline prevents Lyme disease
This is categorically false.
rzz3··on Addressing AI’s energy cost
No, our dependence on fossil fuels to product energy is harming our planet. I feel like it’s long past time we reinvest in nuclear energy. It’s the one thing we can do to significantly reduce fossil fuel consumption over the next decade.
rzz3··on A cancer trial’s unexpected result: Remission in every patient
Because (at least) for people with a high risk of dying, and operating under well-informed consent, that decision should be between patients and their doctors alone.
rzz3··on The FBI tried to ambush my source
Is there evidence of such avenues being effective, specially within the US Intelligence Community? I can’t find any.
rzz3··on The FBI tried to ambush my source
Or perhaps you’re just getting older, and your income level is rising, and you don’t operate near any edges of the bounds of the law. Due to your perspective, freedom may have become less important that security.

Of course there is always a balance to be found, and everyone’s perspective is different, but personally I’m a 1 or a 2 in the `freedom |—————| safety` scale.

rzz3··on Tesla to Cut 10% of Jobs
But at this point everyone knows. It’s already become mainstream business news. If other companies try this, the market will absolutely know they’re lying, and additionally lack the transparency and morality to actually admit they need to do layoffs.
rzz3··on Uber and Lyft’s new road: Fewer drivers, thrifty riders and jittery investors
I always see people coming back to public transit in discussions like this, but there seems to be some kind of fundamental disconnect. Uber/Lyft are for people who don’t have that kind of time.
rzz3··on Uber and Lyft’s new road: Fewer drivers, thrifty riders and jittery investors
That’s to scam you. Either you know how to get there, or you don’t and they’ll take the long way to run up the meter.
rzz3··on Uber and Lyft’s new road: Fewer drivers, thrifty riders and jittery investors
You’re missing the cost of engineering, for one thing. Also “host Uber at OVH” isn’t remotely realistic.
rzz3··on Uber and Lyft’s new road: Fewer drivers, thrifty riders and jittery investors
That may be true, but I’d much rather ride in an Uber or Lyft with less timely service and a higher price, than in a nasty yellow Crown Victoria from the dawn of time itself, with that ugly, rough, stained interior that smells like cigarettes and vomit. Taxis don’t even offer phone chargers or water.

IMO, Taxis would have long since died as an industry if it weren’t for governments propping them up artificially.

rzz3··on TikTok’s Work Culture: Anxiety, Secrecy and Relentless Pressure
What is Lark Suite?
rzz3··on TikTok’s Work Culture: Anxiety, Secrecy and Relentless Pressure
Their recruiters frequently reach out to me, and now I’ll likely start citing this as yet another reason why I’d never do it.
rzz3··on [dead]
Please don’t hurt yourself. It might seem like there’s no fixing things, that it’s all too late, too far gone, etc. But you could wake up tomorrow and your whole life could change for the better.

1-800-273-8255 please at least call and have a conversation with them about it. Call from Google Voice or Skype or something if you don’t want them to have your number.

rzz3··on How to professionally say
I feel “on the air” is a bit misleading and antiquated, and I think that’s quite relevant, because you seem to be using “the air” as some barometer of social acceptance.

Even the “cool” elderly people I know stopped listening to the radio and broadcast TV years ago. Nowadays, everything is Podcasts, Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, YouTube, TikTok, etc. and none of them censor “fuck”. Our culture is generally becoming a lot more open and accepting when it comes to the use of words like “fuck” and “shit”, however words like “cunt” are still fairly taboo.

From my perspective, broadcast TV and radio are simply a measure of how many Americans are hanging onto an antiquated culture, and I’m sure there’s significant overlap between “people who listen to broadcast” and “people who still find ‘fuck’ offensive”, and it’s likely no longer just a function of age.

Thanks for sharing the Lenny Bruce but, I had no idea that inspired Carlin!

rzz3··on How to professionally say
Fuck is generally very acceptable in meetings at my (large tech) company (in US at least), depending of course on context. I hear it a lot less from our APAC and EU offices though.
rzz3··on Twitter re-examines Elon Musk’s bid, may be more receptive to a deal
Why? What I’m earth changes the next day? I’d you enjoy Twitter, use it. If it stops bringing you joy, stop using it. I, on the other hand, already dislike Twitter and may very well give it another chance under new leadership. But it’s just a social media account, everything doesn’t need to be some kind of statement. If you want to delete it, just do it, we don’t all need to hear about it.
rzz3··on Ask HN: Am I going insane or is there genuinely no value in blockchain tech?
Planet destroying is a bit extreme. The traditional finance system is no more energy efficient overall. It’s certainly not environmentally friendly, but that’s more a function of the dirty power we use for anything and everything. We just need to fix our methods of generating energy, not criticize everything that uses a lot of it.
rzz3··on Netflix Tumbles as 200k Users Exit for First Drop in Decade
Just an anecdotal perspective, but several of my friends have cancelled recently because there’s just not much new and good to watch. I’m also not finding enough content to watch lately, but I have two other streaming services I don’t mind paying for, so I’m not going to cancel it just because it’s been a few weeks since I saw something interesting.
rzz3··on The Uber Bubble
Despite all of the negatives, many of which I agree with, the legacy taxi industry really sucked for riders. Riding in a taxi feels dirty to me, to be honest. Old, ugly cars that never seem well maintained, having to actually call someone on a phone and tell them where to pick you up, often not accepting Apple Pay, Android Pay, credit cards. Rude drivers with no rating system to disincentivize it…

It’s sad that Uber seemingly made such bad business decisions and ultimately has not been successful as a business. However, the “disruption” was widely successful. Hell, they even became a verb.

Personally, even as a customer, I strongly prefer Lyft (but I’d never take a Taxi unless I was somehow forced to).

rzz3··on Ask HN: What to do if you disapprove of a company practice?
Speak up, directly, but in a professional, empathetic, and understanding manner. It sounds scary, but good leaders appreciate this kind of feedback. If you do it somewhere with visibility, like a chat channel, others will likely pile on and back you up as well.
rzz3··on Warning Update: Russia May Conduct a Chemical or Radiological False-Flag Attack
This seems completely baseless. Anyone might do anything, and there’s no evidence here.
rzz3··on Secure messengers in war time
Deeper history aside, obviously no one has any negative intention in saying it in their comments. Everyone knows what they mean. It’s flatly unhelpful to go around constantly correcting people.
rzz3··on Secure messengers in war time
When it has a capital letter at the beginning, it’s perfectly clear that we’re referring to a country, rather than “the outskirts”. When our text is in English, it’s clear that “Ukraine” refers to a country, not “outskirts”. This is downright ridiculous and it’s annoying that some people are so deficient in application of contextual understanding that they criticize others in this way. Be nice to people and stop playing word police. This isn’t Reddit.
rzz3··on Secure messengers in war time
There’s just no valid reason for anyone to be offended by that, come on. Are you offended when people call it “the USA” or “the UK”?
rzz3··on I advised a student to not publish evidence of reverse racism
It sounds to me like the student was relying on his grades and intellect, and denied admission into the honors program solely due to his race and gender.
rzz3··on Kubernetes Is Moving on from Dockershim: Commitments and Next Steps
Are people still using Docker in dev? What container runtime is primarily replacing Docker in k8s?
rzz3··on Ask HN: If you're in a 100% remote role, should you turn your camera on?
For me, it depends on the meeting. For discussions with the same people I talk to every day, when none of us prefer camera, we typically don’t. In a 1:1, I do. In a meeting with another team, I do. I find having my camera on to be taxing, and I’m not always exactly looking fresh and clean and shaved for work. Often wearing the same clothes I wore yesterday. Often sitting in a messy office. The focus is on work, not optics during conversations generally.
rzz3··on Ask HN: Who hacked GiveSendGo to doxx the donors, is anyone looking into this?
This isn’t Reddit. Doxxing is scummy.
