rykov··on [dead]
This "when no one is watching you" insight made me think of GaryVee vs. Tom Crush 5am phone call:

rykov··on Mixergy gets to know a lot about Steve Jobs from the founder of Smugmug
Andrew, it looks like the audio feed in iTunes is stuck. I've been itching to hear the latest episodes.
rykov··on The costs of configurable settings in your web application
Configurable settings are like diamonds and herpes - they are forever.
rykov··on Amazon lowers outbound data charge by 2 cents
Too bad they cancelled their 30 day lowest price guarantee http://consumerist.com/2008/09/amazon-ends-post-order-price-...
rykov··on McGraw-Hill CEO: "The tablet is going to be just really terrific"
Based on how blatant these "leaks" are getting, I'd say that Apple PR cooked this leeway into the NDA to elevate buzz.

Everyone is saying "it's awesome - we are on board" but not much beyond that.

rykov··on Bezos ‘astonished’ by Kindle success
Anybody else see a bit of irony in having Fake Steve Jobs interview Bezos about iSlate vs. Kindle?
rykov··on Rails 3 : Vaporware To Awesome
Most excited about the new router - doing subdomain and custom domain support is a hack in Rails 2.3
rykov··on Google Analytics unblocks the Web w/ Async support
This works even cooler when you want to minify your code:

MyLongClassName = function() {};

function(_c) { _c.prototype.method1 = ...; _c.prototype.method2 = ...; }(MyLongClassName);

This allows something like YUI compressor to shorten _c local variable for every method definition, rather than store "MyLongClassName" for each one.

rykov··on The hidden meaning of the hidden Starbucks logo
Not sure why everyone thinks that Starbucks is taking this step from a position of weakness. As far as business is concerned, I think it's a good strategic move for them to explore this growth channel regardless of their brand's strength. Many other companies have a successful strategy involving both private label and branded products.

rykov··on Can I talk to that William fellow? He was so helpful.
Huge respect for CEOs that regularly visit the front lines. Apparently Bezos swears by it.

rykov··on Parents are Borrowing from Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer
What's the protocol on telling your child "I raised and treated you like a dog"? Do you have to wait until they're 18?
rykov··on Ask HN: How do you keep up with changing technologies?
Side projects! I always try to incorporate promising new platforms/technologies into new side projects both as a way to learn and as a way to test the technology.

You won't use everything you play with, but over time, your toolset and skill will grow and you'll be able to deliver better and more unique solutions that will get you noticed. Capitalize on that by doing a brown bag or by helping other teams when they follow the scent of success. Rinse/Repeat. In 7-8 years, everyone will know that you're indispensable.

rykov··on Ask HN: Anyone used Amazon EC2 with a database or other high IO operation?
RAID helps if disk is the bottleneck. If it's the network (EBS is network attached), then you're SOL and should probably try a bigger instance instead and hope fewer people share that physical host.
rykov··on Ask HN: Facebook canvas app vs. FB Connect/Platform?
Yep. Every developer/company that attaches itself to a larger platform (Apple Appstore, Facebook, etc) needs to ask "What would I do in the future if I were <platform company>?" and then build a strategy to account for that.

Company-sponsored platforms are self-interested moving targets just like everything else in business.

Just something to think about when you're coding iFartVille 3000.

rykov··on The Very Strange Story of the Startup That Says It Made $10m Before Launching
Amazing - I thought of Hans as well, but a different movie - Gladiator.

rykov··on Java directly on Xen
I thought the outcome of CISC vs RISC battle has shown that best performance comes from simpler/faster CPUs with smarter software, not vice versa.
rykov··on SimpleDB gotcha: they can delete your data
Loss of data after 6 months did not seem that bad after I read that Amazon shuts down your MySQL (RDS) instance every week for up to 4 hours "for maintenance"

http://aws.typepad.com/aws/2009/10/introducing-rds-the-amazo...

Edit: wording fix

rykov··on Java directly on Xen
As JVM gets closer to being the de-facto VM for running any language (Jython, jRuby, Scala, Java, etc), the possibility of higher performance by running the VM "closer to metal" is quite exciting. I commend Sun on pushing JVM beyond just Java.
rykov··on Ask HN: what's stopping you from launching?
A few reasons off the top of my head where subdomains make sense: 1. Letting users override subdomain with a custom domain (ala Posterous) 2. White-labeling (esp. in combination with #1) 3. SEO - last I researched, Google sees virtual hosts on same IP as separate entities, so if your clients use a custom domain and you have a "Powered by" backlink, you'll get some SEO juice
rykov··on Ninite: How we got 18,000 beta users in 4 weeks
Can you give more details on how many blogs you've contacted? How many covered you? How did you phrase your email to make it interesting to the bloggers?

Edit: Also, how you computed readership numbers for a blog?

rykov··on Poll: What do you think of OpenID?
A better question would be, for those of you who implement OpenID, Facebook Connect, etc. What's the customer percent breakdown against doing it the old fashioned (email & password) way?
rykov··on Niche Site Builders
Hmm...do Tumblr, and now Posterous, qualify as niche site builders? or maybe Shopify?

From all such site builder examples out there, the more successful ones seem to nail down the underlying problem first (publishing, e-commerce, etc), and then enhance it with customization - not the other way around.

rykov··on Ask HN: Is version control worth learning early on?
+1 for version control.

1) Do it because it will give you a huge piece of mind (backup & history)

2) Do it because you can code review (git diff) the whole feature before committing it, rather than doing it one line at a time and hoping you'll achieve stability in the future.
