ryanwhitney··on Big Ass Data Broker Opt-Out List
Which is extra annoying, because they shouldn't, but it's somewhat vague.

CCPA says: "Businesses also should not require you to verify your identity, though they can ask you basic questions to identify which personal information is associated with you."[0]

The worst is that some of the bigger services (intelius, who provides data for many of these sites) have begun to require opt-outs come from an email address that they already have on file for you. Really need to legislate these companies out of existence.

ryanwhitney··on Big Ass Data Broker Opt-Out List
The month or two thing will work for some exposures, but the bummer reality is that these sites are terrible and the worst of them take persistence and escalation to remove, which can take some time.

(I've been working for one of the aforementioned—Kanary—for about a year now on this sort of thing.)

Re: undoing opt-outs, we do not do that, but data brokers will re-surface your information again if they find it elsewhere.

ryanwhitney··on Figma makes 200 fixes and improvements to Dev Mode
Lots of people saying it’s not for them.

Anyone actually using Dev Mode? How’s it helping you?

(Not an astroturf; I’m in the former camp myself.)

ryanwhitney··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
I tried Apollo early on and it was a bit too bare-bones.

After all the news, I gave it another whirl for the past month and it’s very nice. After previously using the official app, it was a breath of fresh air to see a native video player, native share sheets, and so much more. Super nice, useful details like image counts on galleries. Such a shame that Reddit’s huge team is actively working in the opposite direction.

Amazing work, Christian. Really unfortunate that Reddit has gone in this direction and truly shameful and disgusting how they’ve handled it.

ryanwhitney··on Random bit-flip invalidates certificate transparency log – again?
Comment by the author (from the last time this happened) seemed helpful:

"OP here. Unless you work for a certificate authority or a web browser, this event will have zero impact on you. While this particular CT log has failed, there are many other CT logs, and certificates are required to be logged to 2-3 different logs (depending on certificate lifetime) so that if a log fails web browsers can rely on one of the other logs to ensure the certificate is publicly logged.

This is the 8th log to fail (although the first caused by a bit flip), and log failure has never caused a user-facing certificate error. The overall CT ecosystem has proven very resilient, even if a bit flip can take out an individual log.

(P.S. No one knows if it was really a cosmic ray or not. But it's almost certainly a random hardware error rather than a software bug, and cosmic ray is just the informal term people like to use for unexplained hardware bit flips.)"

ryanwhitney··on I Quit Reddit in 1 Day
If you keep your phone's browser on private mode, this becomes a lot easier! (Long as you don't have any old bookmarks for that site.)

Combined with DuckDuckGo's !bang notation—since you no longer have autocomplete for visited sites—you can still get to useful places like wikipedia quickly.

Unfortunate side-effect is that by staying logged out everywhere, with no cookies, means you'll see every single "log in with gmail!", "use the app for a better experience" dark pattern popup, unless your adblocker covers annoyances.

ryanwhitney··on Google Groups has been left to die
Groups.io was founded by Mark Fletcher[0], who in '97 started the mailing list service that Yahoo! eventually bought and turned into their Groups product. They're about 10 years in and he posts weekly changelogs and updates[1]. Nonetheless, they're small and one might guess there's a high bus factor here. (Sorry Mark!)

I think it's a toss up either way. I hadn't seen talk of Google Groups being internally significant until this thread, but they've burned enough similar products that it was barely a consideration for me.

ryanwhitney··on Google Groups has been left to die
Yahoo! Groups lasted 19 years.

I co-admin a large group that had to find a new home when it was killed off. We went to a third party (groups.io) that accepts money in exchange for services.

Will that have longevity? No idea, but it's at least preferable to trusting [insert big tech co]'s benevolence in keeping a service (that they seemingly don't care about) running.

ryanwhitney··on Jessica Hische Brings New Life to an Old Logo
Lots of negative comments so far, but this is much preferable to having every brand trend towards plain san-serif wordmarks[0] that will be easier to use. Much closer to something like the evolution the Coke brand[1], which occasionally refreshes and modernizes, but retains the same character it had 100+ years ago.

ryanwhitney··on Reusing yesterday’s coffee grounds for another cup of coffee
Yeah, that’s what’s missing here: experimentation on how to make it work.

I’ve tried this by re-using grounds, but also adding fresh grounds on top. (About half as much as i’d normally use.) It still comes out a bit watery, but much closer to normal.

ryanwhitney··on What Meta Does to Retain Me
> I was hired by Facebook (now Meta) in 2019

> I’ve been at the company longer than almost 70% of people

Apparently they’re not doing much? I would expect this from either a company rapidly scaling up, or one with almost everyone jumping ship.

ryanwhitney··on Corded headphones are making an unexpected return
The dreaded doorknob catch.
ryanwhitney··on Sex Differences in Adolescents’ Occupational Aspirations
“Despite the long-term and widespread study of the sex differences in interest in people-oriented as compared to things-oriented occupations, there is no consensus on the sources of these differences.”
ryanwhitney··on Apple Joins Blender Development Fund
This is awesome. While far from a Mac app in terms of UI norms, I‘ve found blender to feel more at home on a Mac than expensive heavy hitters like Cinema 4D which still fails to render text and icons at a native resolution out of the box. I’m a very light 3D user, but I’ve been really impressed with it.
ryanwhitney··on I built four eight-foot-long handwriting robots
Surprised to see overwhelmingly positive comments on this.

It’s a cool project, yes. But getting even poorly faked versions of this with a “handwriting” font is super annoying.

The purpose of this is to deceive the recipient, plain and simple.

ryanwhitney··on Ask HN: Introduction to Analog Synthesizers (Simulation OK)
If you’d like a no-setup, no-tools, no-cost way to just start messing around, the WebAudio API[0] isn’t a bad place to start.

It has its shortcomings, but in many ways mimics the logic of a real synth. They’ve got a synth[1] tutorial that works and if you search “webaudio synth” a bit, there are other helpful write-ups to start learning or playing with concepts you learn about from other resources.

ryanwhitney··on The incel lexicon: Deciphering the emergent cryptolect of a global community
> What about the fathers and men who advocate for changes to k-12 education to help boys succeed. Are these men's rights advocates also part of this "manosphere"?

Probably not. They’re talking about specific groups.

ryanwhitney··on Automattic acquires journaling app Day One
> I’ll be remaining at the helm of Day One, leading the same passionate team that has been responsible for the development and design behind the app today. This means that the Day One you rely on to save your thoughts, photos, videos, audio recordings, and more isn’t going away. Instead, it’ll only get better, with future integrations with Tumblr and WordPress.com. Rest assured there are no current plans to change the privacy of Day One; safely protecting memories and creating a 100% personal space is the foundation upon which this company was built.

ryanwhitney··on Ask HN: What's your sleeping setup(bed/pillows/sheets)?
I started sleeping on the floor about six months ago. Carpet, thin duvet folded beneath me. I’ve looked at a dedicated shikibuton-type-setup, but the paradox of choice has stricken pretty hard.

It wasn’t from any sort of plan or goal, I just started doing so after some time spent crashing on my living room floor watching movies with my roommate.

I like that I get up quicker in the morning. And it’s been a more dedicated sleeping setup than a bed has ever been. Surprisingly, I’ve found that almost every time I’ve slept on a normal mattress (few different ones) since, I’ve had some back or neck pain the next day.

ryanwhitney··on ‘Misogynistic’ Apple hire is out hours after employees call for investigation
Looks like this one as well now.
ryanwhitney··on ‘Misogynistic’ Apple hire is out hours after employees call for investigation
Outside of the main quote that keeps showing up, he was also fairly creepy writing about women he worked with.

> Unlike most women at Facebook (or in the Bay Area, really) she knew how to dress; forties-style, form-fitting dresses from neck to knee were her mainstay.

> There were few women one would call conventionally attractive at Facebook. The few there were rarely if ever dressed for work with their femininity on display in the form of dresses and heels

> If her look was supposed to disarm me, she needed either more cleavage or more charm.

Sounds like not someone you'd want around if you're a company that wants to make people feel at all safe and comfortable in an office.

ryanwhitney··on CSS Houdini
Looks like this would finally allow managing pseudo-classes via JavaScript? What a world.
ryanwhitney··on Why does every advert look the same? Corporate Memphis
Though, fairly buried after using the term constantly throughout the beginning of the piece!

Didn't find it myself so I came back to HN and saw GP comment. Then cmd+f for "italian" to find it in the article.

ryanwhitney··on CSS Tips
There are plenty of uses for snap scrolling and carousels that aren’t rotating hero images.

See something like https://airbnb.com which uses it for categories a’la the App Store. Image galleries, Netflix-type layouts, etc.

ryanwhitney··on Apple sued for terminating account with $25k worth of apps and videos
Fairly certain all music sold through iTunes has been DRM-free since like 2010. Amazon too, I think.

(Movies, not so much.)

ryanwhitney··on Using <details> for menus and dialogs (2019)
I'm not sure how much <details> can be customized, but there's also a CSS-only route using a hidden checkbox beneath the hamburger icon and looking for the input[type="checkbox"]:checked selector. (Example: https://codepen.io/plavookac/pen/qomrMw)
